After setup, Microsoft documents switching to a local account in Settings. Choose a Microsoft account if you want its service integration and cross-device sync; choose a local account if you prefer a device-specific sign-in that works offline.
What is the difference between a local account and a Microsoft account?
A local account belongs to one Windows device. It can sign in without an internet connection and is not connected to Microsoft’s cloud or other Microsoft services. A Microsoft account uses an email address and password across Windows and Microsoft services; Microsoft says it can sync settings and files across devices. The exact items that sync depend on the relevant settings and services.

These are sign-in choices, not a complete switch for every Windows feature. Licensing, encryption, app sign-ins and individual sync settings can have their own requirements. Using one account type does not, by itself, establish whether each of those features is available or enabled.

Which account fits your needs?
| Decision | Local account | Microsoft account |
|---|---|---|
| Signing in offline | Internet is not required to sign in. | Windows sign-in is associated with Microsoft’s online services; internet is needed for online services and sync. |
| Where the account applies | Specific to that device; settings, files and applications are limited to that device, according to Microsoft. | Can be used across devices and Microsoft services; settings and files can sync. |
| Windows 11 Home first-use setup | Microsoft’s stated requirement is internet access and a Microsoft account to complete first-use setup. | Matches the documented Home first-use setup path. |
| Changing account type later | Can be changed to a Microsoft account in Settings. | Can be changed to a local account in Settings. |
| Password recovery | Microsoft warns that forgetting the password may prevent recovery if you did not create a password reset disk. | Recovery uses Microsoft account security and recovery mechanisms; the outcome depends on your circumstances. |
| Work or school device | Follow your organization’s enrollment instructions. | Work or school credentials and device-management policy may apply; a personal Microsoft account is not required for devices joined to Microsoft Entra ID or an on-premises Active Directory domain. |
Microsoft recommends a Microsoft account for integration with its services and syncing. A local account may suit you better if you want a device-specific sign-in and do not need those cross-device features. Neither choice is universally safer or better; weigh the functions you actually use against the recovery tradeoff.

Can you install Windows 11 without a Microsoft account?
For Windows 11 Home, Microsoft’s current requirements page says an internet connection and a Microsoft account are required to complete device setup on first use. That statement concerns the initial setup flow; it does not say you must continue using a Microsoft account after setup. It should not be generalized to every Windows edition or organization-managed setup. Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirements page was last updated July 14, 2026.
Unofficial setup workarounds can be version-sensitive, and there is no established universal bypass for current installation media. In an October 6, 2025 announcement about Windows 11 Insider Preview Dev Channel build 26220.6772, Microsoft said it was removing known mechanisms for creating a local account in the Windows Setup experience (OOBE), and that users would need to complete OOBE with internet and a Microsoft account. The announcement concerned a preview build with gradual rollout, so it does not establish behavior for every stable build, edition or managed setup. Check the guidance for your exact Windows build rather than relying on an old workaround. Read the Windows Insider announcement.

How do you switch to a local account after setup?
- Open Settings > Accounts > Your info.
- Select Sign in with a local account instead.
- Follow the prompts to enter a username and password.
- Sign out to finish the change.
Microsoft documents changing in the other direction from the same account area: choose the option to sign in with a Microsoft account instead and follow the prompts. The wording may vary slightly by Windows version. See Microsoft’s account-switching instructions.
What if the PC belongs to work or school?
Use the organization’s enrollment process rather than treating a personal Microsoft account as the default. Microsoft says a personal Microsoft account is not required for devices joined to Microsoft Entra ID or an on-premises Active Directory domain. Entra domain join is not available in Windows Home, and an organization may require specific credentials or device-management settings. Check with your IT administrator or follow your school’s setup instructions. Microsoft’s Windows device enrollment guidance covers these paths.

What a local account does not establish
- It does not prove that Windows collects no diagnostic or other data, or make you anonymous.
- It does not, by itself, change Windows licensing.
- It does not mean every app, service, or file-sync feature will behave identically; those can have separate sign-in and settings requirements.
