Can a $15 Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W Replace Three Subscriptions?

The Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W can suit lightweight self-hosted jobs such as DNS filtering, but its 2021 $15 launch price and a claim of reliability do not prove it can replace three unspecified subscriptions.

A Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W can host some lightweight services, but the title alone does not establish which three subscriptions it replaced or whether the setup has proved reliable. The $15 figure was the board’s launch price in 2021, not evidence of its current retail price. One documented candidate for the hardware is Pi-hole, a DNS-based network blocker; more demanding jobs need workload-specific testing.

What the $15 Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W can—and cannot—tell you

Raspberry Pi announced the Zero 2 W on 28 October 2021 with a launch price of $15. That is a historical price, not a current-price quote. The board’s official launch specifications list a 1 GHz quad-core Arm Cortex-A53 processor, 512 MB of LPDDR2 RAM, 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2 and a microSD slot. Raspberry Pi’s announcement and product specifications are the relevant references.

Those specifications make the Zero 2 W a small, constrained host—not a universal replacement for paid services. Whether it is suitable depends on what the service does, how many devices use it, and what you expect from performance and availability. The title does not identify the three subscriptions or the software used in their place, so it cannot support a service-by-service verdict or a savings calculation.

Which subscription replacements are plausible?

Network-wide DNS blocking

Pi-hole is a documented lightweight candidate. Its project describes it as “a DNS (Domain Name Service) sinkhole that protects your devices from unwanted content, without installing any client-side software.” It can block some unwanted content on devices such as smart TVs and apps, but it is not a guarantee against every ad or tracker. Blocking applies to devices that use Pi-hole for DNS; a device or app that routes around that DNS service may not be covered. See the Pi-hole project and its prerequisites.

Media libraries and other heavier services

A self-hosted media server is not the same thing as a subscription catalog: it generally serves media you already have access to, rather than providing a commercial streaming service’s catalog. More importantly, Jellyfin’s hardware guidance warns that most single-board computers may be too slow for an acceptable experience. Without details such as the files, number of simultaneous users, playback clients and whether transcoding is needed, it would be misleading to claim that a Zero 2 W reliably streams media. Jellyfin’s hardware-selection guidance explains the workload considerations.

For any other proposed replacement, compare the actual features the subscription provides with what the self-hosted software can do. A small server may replace one function while leaving catalog access, synchronization, mobile apps or customer support behind.

What else is needed to run Pi-hole?

Pi-hole’s current prerequisites specify a supported Linux distribution, at least 512 MB of RAM, at least 2 GB of free storage (4 GB recommended), and a static IP address or DHCP reservation. The Zero 2 W meets the stated RAM minimum on paper, but that does not guarantee good performance for every network or additional workload. Check the project’s prerequisites before installing.

What “bulletproof” would need to mean in practice

Calling a setup bulletproof is a personal claim unless it is supported by an uptime record, failure history and recovery evidence. A working installation is not, by itself, proof that it will remain available or that it can be restored after a card, power supply or network failure.

For a useful reliability account, identify the operating system and configuration, how storage is attached, whether the service is reachable remotely, how backups are made, and whether a restore has been tested. Also say how long the system has been running and what outages occurred. Those details let readers judge whether the result fits their own risk tolerance; without them, reliability cannot be independently assessed.

How to decide whether to replace a subscription

  • Match the function: List the specific subscription features you use, then verify that the self-hosted software provides those functions rather than assuming the categories are interchangeable.
  • Account for total cost: Compare the actual recurring fees with hardware, storage, electricity and replacement costs over the same time period. The launch price alone is not a complete cost comparison.
  • Consider availability: A service at home depends on the board, storage, power, router and internet connection. Decide what happens when any of those is unavailable.
  • Plan for recovery: Keep a backup appropriate to the data and test that it can be restored. A running server is not a backup.
  • Assess maintenance and access: Updates, DNS settings, remote access and security become your responsibility when you self-host.

Pi-hole can also run on other hardware with a supported operating system, so choosing a Raspberry Pi is optional rather than a software requirement. The best host is the one that meets the workload and maintenance needs—not necessarily the smallest or cheapest board. Pi-hole’s prerequisite documentation describes its supported environment.
