Start with Settings > System > Notifications to reduce interruptions, then review personalization, diagnostics, app permissions, and location under Settings > Privacy & security. These controls can limit specific notifications and data uses; they do not make a PC completely private, and some changes affect useful features.
Silence interruptions without missing everything
Open Settings > System > Notifications. Do Not Disturb sends most notifications to Notification Center rather than showing them as banners, but alarms, reminders, and apps you designate as priorities can still interrupt you. That lets you quiet routine alerts while keeping the ones you rely on.
Turn Do Not Disturb on manually from Notification Center, or set it to activate automatically at chosen times and in situations such as display duplication, gaming, full-screen app use, or the first hour after a Windows feature update. Under priority notifications, choose which calls, reminders, and apps may still show alerts. See Microsoft Support’s guide to notifications and Do Not Disturb.

Limit personalized suggestions and advertising identifiers
Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Recommendations & offers and review the personalization controls there. Depending on your Windows version, search Settings for “Recommendations & offers” if the path or labels differ.
- Get personalized tips, ads, and recommendations based on my Windows activity: controls personalized suggestions based on Windows activity.
- Let apps show my personalized ads by using my advertising ID: limits apps’ use of that Windows identifier for ad personalization. Turning it off does not reduce the number of ads; ads may be less relevant instead, and other advertising methods can still personalize ads.
- Website access to the language list: review whether websites can use your preferred-language list to provide locally relevant content.
- App-launch tracking: controls whether Windows tracks app launches to improve Start and search results.
- Suggested content in Settings: turns off suggestions displayed in Settings.
Microsoft says personalized offers may draw on Windows diagnostic data, account information, and activity from other Microsoft products or services, subject to the choices and permissions it describes. These switches control the named Windows personalization features, not every form of advertising or data use. Read Microsoft’s explanation of personalized ads and recommendations.

Choose diagnostic-data and tailored-experience settings
Open Settings > Privacy & security > Diagnostics & feedback. Review whether to send optional diagnostic data and whether to allow Tailored experiences. Microsoft describes diagnostic data as supporting Windows security, updates, troubleshooting, and product improvements, with required and optional categories. Disabling optional data or tailored experiences affects those specific settings; it is not a general switch for all data associated with Windows or your account.
The page also offers a control to delete diagnostic data from the device. Microsoft cautions that this does not necessarily delete data associated with a Microsoft account or copies held by an organization. On a work- or school-managed PC, some settings may be controlled by the organization. See Microsoft’s Diagnostics & feedback and privacy guidance.

Audit app permissions—and account for desktop apps
Under Settings > Privacy & security, open permissions such as Location, Camera, Microphone, Contacts, and Calendar. Check access at both the device and app levels where Windows offers those controls, and turn off access for apps that do not need it.
These lists do not cover every app in the same way. Desktop apps may not appear, may not use Windows privacy prompts, and may provide their own settings and privacy policies. Check the desktop app’s settings as well; a Windows permission page is not a complete inventory of every program’s access. Microsoft explains the distinction in its Windows app permissions guidance.

Restrict location with its feature tradeoffs in mind
Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Location and review device-wide and per-app access. Location can support directions, nearby services, automatic time-zone changes, and Find my device. Windows may estimate location from signals such as GPS, wireless access points, cell towers, and IP address.
If you want to limit location sharing, consider disabling access for individual apps first. Turning location off broadly can affect location-dependent features, including automatic time zone and Find my device. It also cannot guarantee that every desktop app or third-party service is unable to infer location through other signals. Disabling wireless radios to limit those signals may impair connectivity or peripheral use. Microsoft’s location and privacy overview describes the service and its tradeoffs.

Make the changes in the order that fits your priorities
- For fewer interruptions: set Do Not Disturb and add only essential priority notifications.
- For fewer personalized prompts: review Recommendations & offers, including the advertising ID and suggested content.
- For data choices: review optional diagnostics and Tailored experiences, then understand what the delete control does and does not remove.
- For sensitive capabilities: audit location, camera, microphone, contacts, and calendar by app, while checking desktop apps separately.
- For location privacy: restrict particular apps before turning off location device-wide, especially if you use automatic time zone or Find my device.
