Windows 11 Right-Click Menu: Microsoft’s Fix and the Built-In Legacy Option

Microsoft says Windows 11’s right-click menu became cluttered and sluggish. Here’s what the Insider redesign changes—and how to open the legacy menu today.

Microsoft acknowledged on August 17, 2026, that the Windows 11 right-click menu had become “cluttered and sluggish.” It announced a redesigned menu with customization controls, but that experience is rolling out to Windows Insiders—not necessarily to every Windows 11 PC. If you need commands from the older menu now, choose Show more options or press Shift+F10.

What Microsoft says needs fixing

In its August 17, 2026 Windows Insider announcement, Microsoft said: “Over time, though, the menu became cluttered and sluggish, and we recognized the need to dramatically reduce the time between right-clicking and having a menu that’s fully ready to use.”

The announced work targets both the menu’s appearance and the time it takes to become ready. Microsoft says app-added options can make the menu do extra work when it opens, and describes engineering changes alongside a less crowded default menu. The post reports no benchmark or measured speedup, so it supports describing Microsoft’s goals—not claiming a specific performance gain.

What the redesigned menu lets you change

For Insider builds that include the rollout, Microsoft places the new controls at Settings > Personalization > Context Menu. The page is intended to let users choose which commands and app extensions appear, and how common actions are presented.

Amazon Basics Wired QWERTY Keyboard, Works with Windows, Plug and Play, Easy to Use with Media Control, Full-Sized, Black
  • KEYBOARD: The keyboard works for Windows with hot keys that enable easy access to Media, My Computer, Mute, Volume up/down, and Calculator
  • EASY SETUP: Experience simple installation with the USB wired connection
  • VERSATILE COMPATIBILITY: This keyboard is designed to work with multiple Windows versions, including Vista, 7, 8, 10 offering broad compatibility across devices.
  • SLEEK DESIGN: The elegant black color of the wired keyboard complements your tech and decor, adding a stylish and cohesive look to any setup without sacrificing function.
  • FULL-SIZED CONVENIENCE: The standard QWERTY layout of this keyboard set offers a familiar typing experience, ideal for both professional tasks and personal use.
  • Manage built-in commands: Turn options such as Send to and Create shortcut on or off. Microsoft also identifies Print as a command that can now be enabled.
  • Control app extensions: Choose which app-added options appear in the main menu or a submenu, and hide the submenu if desired.
  • Change common-action layout: Display Cut, Copy, Paste, Rename, Delete, and Share inline as text instead of in the icon row.
  • Move Properties: Put the Properties command at the bottom of the menu.

Microsoft describes the feature as rolling out to Windows Insiders and says it may be refined in response to feedback. Whether the page is available depends on the Windows build and channel; check your own Settings app rather than assuming every Windows 11 installation has it.

How to open the older context menu right now

If the command you need is missing from the modern menu, Windows already provides a built-in way to reveal the older menu. Microsoft’s Windows 11 design explainer documents these options:

This opens the Windows 10-style context menu, where you can access legacy commands and app extensions. It is an access route, not the new customization page: it does not itself provide the announced Settings controls or establish a permanent setting to make the legacy menu the default on every current Windows 11 build.

Which option fits your situation?

  • You need a legacy command immediately: Use Show more options or one of the documented keyboard shortcuts.
  • You want to tailor the modern menu: Look for Settings > Personalization > Context Menu. If the page is absent, the Insider feature may not have reached your build.
  • You are deciding whether the redesign is faster: Microsoft says faster readiness is a goal, but its announcement gives no timing result. There is no published figure in the cited posts to compare against your current menu.
