Windows 11: Review Alerts Still in Notification Center

Find missed alerts in Windows 11’s Notification Center, check per-app notification settings, and learn what Microsoft says about cleared notifications.

To check missed notifications in Windows 11, open Notification Center: select the clock or notification bell on the taskbar, or press Windows key + N. You can review notifications that are still displayed there, but Microsoft does not specify how long they remain or explain how to recover them after they have been cleared.

Open Notification Center and review alerts

  1. Open the center. Select the clock or notification bell on the taskbar, press Windows key + N, or, on a touchscreen, swipe in from the side of the screen. These options open the same Notification Center. Microsoft’s instructions for checking missed notifications list these ways to open it.
  2. Inspect the notifications shown. Select an alert to open it or use an available action. Some notifications can be expanded to show more detail.

Choose the quickest way to open it

  • Keyboard: Press Windows key + N.
  • Mouse or trackpad: Select the taskbar clock or notification bell.
  • Touchscreen: Swipe in from the side of the screen.

Keep future notifications visible

Notification Center only helps with alerts that are still displayed there. To check whether an app is allowed to send notifications and show them in the center, go to Start > Settings > System > Notifications, select the app, and review its notification options. In particular, check that Show notifications in notification center is enabled. Microsoft’s notification settings guidance describes the per-app controls.

Why a notification may be missing

No banner appeared

Check Notification Center before assuming an alert was lost. When Do not disturb is on, most notifications go to Notification Center instead of appearing as banners. Microsoft explains how Do not disturb affects notifications.

An app’s alerts are not in the center

Open Settings > System > Notifications, select the app, and check that notifications are allowed and Show notifications in notification center is on.

Can you recover cleared notifications or see how long they remain?

Microsoft documents how to clear notifications, but its cited guidance does not say whether cleared notifications can be recovered or give an exact retention period. It is safest to treat alerts that have been cleared as unavailable through the documented Notification Center process.

Notification history is not Activity history

Activity history is a separate Windows feature under Settings > Privacy & security > Activity history. Microsoft describes it as a record of activities such as apps used, files opened, and websites browsed; it is not a list of notifications.
