The headset called “Valve Stream Frame” in the title is Valve’s Steam Frame. For a first session, power it with a suitable adapter, complete its initial update, wake and check the controllers, then choose standalone play or PC streaming. Valve’s setup instructions are written for development, so treat advanced options such as developer mode and beta software as optional rather than routine setup.
1. Connect the headset to power before turning it on
Valve says, “The headset ships in a special mode that requires plugging into power first.” Its development setup page calls for an adapter that supports at least 27 W and recommends 45 W. Those figures are not interchangeable: 27 W is the stated minimum; 45 W is the recommendation. Check the adapter’s output rating and connector before use. Valve’s Steam Frame setup guide.

2. Complete the first update and sign in
Turn on the headset after connecting power. Follow the initial update shown inside the headset; after it reboots, log into Steam. Finish this before troubleshooting PC streaming, so the headset has completed its documented first-run setup.

3. Wake the controllers
Press the Steam-logo button on each controller. Valve says the controllers should pair automatically when they are turned on and visible to the headset. If a controller will not turn on, check whether the battery-compartment tab is still in place and remove it if needed.

4. Check pairing, and pair manually only if needed
Confirm that both controllers appear in the headset. If automatic pairing did not work, open VR Settings > Controllers > Pair Controllers and follow the on-screen instructions. This is Valve’s documented manual pairing route.
5. Choose standalone play or PC streaming
Steam Frame supports standalone VR and non-VR experiences on SteamOS, and is designed primarily for low-latency streaming from a PC. Standalone play runs on the headset; PC streaming lets you use experiences from a connected computer. Choose based on what you want to play and whether you have a PC ready. Valve’s product description is on its Steam Frame page.

6. For PC VR, connect the included wireless adapter
If you are setting up PC streaming, plug the included wireless adapter into the PC. Valve recommends a USB 3 port when available. The adapter provides the documented direct connection between the PC and headset.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches7. Install the SteamVR driver and pair the PC
- Launch SteamVR on the PC and accept its prompt to install the Steam Frame driver.
- When SteamVR displays a pairing code, enter that code in the headset.
- Open the VR dashboard and select the PC to connect.
These steps follow Valve’s development setup guide; the guide describes the connection flow rather than a consumer-focused walkthrough.

8. Use home Wi-Fi as an alternative, not an assumed equivalent
Valve says home Wi-Fi streaming is possible, but tends to be more congested and less reliable than the direct connection through the included adapter. If you have the adapter, start there; if you use Wi-Fi, expect the experience to depend on your network conditions.

Launch a game or other experience you already have access to, and check that it supports the mode you chose—standalone or PC-streamed. Do not assume a particular game is bundled with the headset: Valve’s reviewed setup information does not confirm a Half-Life: Alyx bundle. If an experience will not launch, first verify its mode and connection path before changing advanced settings.

10. Leave advanced options for a reason
After the basic setup works, you can explore development-focused features if you need them. Valve’s guide discusses developer mode and opting into beta branches for the headset, Steam client, and SteamVR to get the latest updates. Those are development or latest-update options, not necessary steps for every first-time player; beta software can differ from the standard setup.
Optional capture tools are also separate from Valve’s headset software. Boxtree’s “Stream Frame” is an independent utility for recording or streaming headset video, not a Valve product. Its setup documentation involves developer mode and SSH or USB steps, so it is not required for ordinary play. Boxtree’s Stream Frame support page.
