The most useful Windows 11 Recovery Environment (WinRE) Command Prompt commands are bcdedit to identify the offline Windows volume, chkdsk to check that volume, sfc to scan protected system files, and DISM to service the offline Windows image. First find the correct drive letter: Windows may not be on C: in WinRE. These are core troubleshooting commands, not a complete list of every command available in every recovery image.
How to open Command Prompt in Windows Recovery Environment
WinRE is Windows’ built-in recovery environment. Microsoft describes its Command Prompt as providing “access to a command-line interface for advanced troubleshooting.” It is intended for troubleshooting, and it is possible to change or damage system data by using the wrong command or target.

If Windows will not start, boot from Windows installation media and select Repair your PC, then go to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Command Prompt. Installation media is an optional way to reach recovery tools; the USB drive itself does not repair Windows.

How to find your Windows drive in Command Prompt
Do not assume the Windows installation is C:. Drive letters can differ in WinRE from those used during normal startup. Microsoft’s troubleshooting workflow uses BCDEdit to identify the system volume by checking osdevice in the Windows Boot Loader section.
- At the prompt, enter
bcdeditand press Enter. - Find the Windows Boot Loader section and read its
osdeviceentry. Microsoft’s example showsD:; your installation may use another letter. - Use the letter shown there in the commands below, and check that the Windows directory exists at that location before running an offline repair.
For example, if the entry identifies D:, the Windows directory would be written as D:Windows in a path. Treat that as an example, not a universal path.
Commands for diagnosing and repairing an offline Windows installation
Check the system volume with CHKDSK
CHKDSK checks a volume’s file system and metadata. The /f switch tells it to attempt to fix errors it finds, so this is more than a read-only check. Microsoft’s WinRE example is:
chkdsk /f D:
Replace D: with the volume letter you identified. Do not run the example against a different volume just because that letter is familiar.
Scan protected system files with SFC
SFC supports an offline scan when you specify the boot directory and Windows directory. Microsoft’s example is:
SFC /scannow /offbootdir=D: /offwindir=D:windows
Replace both example paths with the actual locations for your installation. The drive letter and directory must match the offline Windows installation; an assumed C: path can target the wrong place or fail to find Windows.

Repair the offline image with DISM
DISM can service an offline Windows image. Microsoft’s example is:
DISM /image:D: /cleanup-image /restorehealth
Change the image path to the actual offline installation. If DISM needs repair files from a source, that source must also match the Windows image; do not substitute an arbitrary folder or image. The online DISM recipe using /Online is for a running Windows installation, not a substitute for the offline /image: syntax in WinRE.
How to sequence the offline checks
Microsoft’s WinRE workflow identifies the system volume, checks it with CHKDSK, runs offline SFC, and then uses DISM; if DISM fixes an issue, the workflow repeats SFC. This is distinct from Microsoft’s general guidance for a running Windows installation, which recommends DISM before SFC. Follow the offline paths and syntax when Windows is not running.

Command Prompt is not the only recovery tool. If the problem is that Windows will not start, try Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair. Microsoft says Startup Repair attempts to diagnose common startup problems, including damaged system files and boot configuration issues. An encrypted device may ask for its BitLocker recovery key.
Other available choices include removing a recent update, System Restore, and Reset this PC. Choose based on the likely cause and how much of the system the option changes:

Quick Recap
| Option | Most relevant when | Effect to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Command Prompt | You need to inspect or repair a specific offline volume, system-file set, or Windows image. | Effect depends on the command and switches; verify the target before running it. |
| Startup Repair | Windows does not start and the problem may involve startup files or configuration. | It attempts automatic diagnosis and repair; a BitLocker recovery key may be required. |
| Uninstall updates | The startup problem followed a recent update. | Removes an update rather than applying a command-line file or image repair. |
| System Restore | You want to use a restore point to recover from a system change. | Changes system state; review the recovery option before proceeding. |
| Reset this PC | You are considering a broader Windows recovery action. | Some recovery options can cause data loss. Check the selected reset option’s effect on files before continuing. |
Safety checks before running a repair
- Verify the volume: Use the
osdevicevalue frombcdeditand confirm the Windows directory is on that volume. - Protect important files: Back them up where possible before using recovery options that could cause data loss.
- Have the BitLocker key available: WinRE may require it to access an encrypted device.
- Avoid improvised boot or partition changes: The commands here cover identification and core repairs, not configuration-specific BCD, UEFI, partition, registry, or BitLocker procedures. Do not make those changes unless you understand the exact target and procedure.
