There is no reliable universal figure for how much more or less RAM Windows 11 uses than Windows 10 on the same hardware. The number you see depends on what is installed and running, what Windows has cached, and when and how memory is measured. An idle reading alone cannot tell you whether your everyday workload will run smoothly.
What Microsoft’s RAM guidance tells you
Microsoft lists 4 GB as the minimum memory requirement for Windows 11. That is a minimum, not a promise of a comfortable experience with every workload. Microsoft’s broader support guidance recommends 8 GB to keep a device running long term and says 16 GB or more may suit photo or video editing and other high-performance projects. These are general recommendations, not a controlled comparison of Windows 10 and Windows 11. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirements and RAM guidance.

RAM is faster than disks at reading and writing information, as Microsoft explains, but a high memory reading does not by itself show that a PC is slow or that Windows is using memory inefficiently.

A reading taken just after startup is a snapshot of one system state, not a forecast of how the computer will behave with your browser, office apps, games, or editing software open. The measurement can change with the Windows edition and updates, drivers, startup and background programs, installed applications, and cached data.

- Disclaimer: Maximum Speed requires overclocking/PC BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depend on system components, including motherboard and CPU
- Hand-sorted memory chips ensure high performance with generous overclocking headroom
- VENGEANCE LPX is optimized for wide compatibility with the latest Intel and AMD DDR4 motherboards
- A low-profile height of just 34mm ensures that VENGEANCE LPX even fits in most small-form-factor builds
- A solid aluminum heatspreader efficiently dissipates heat from each module so that they consistently run at high clock speeds
Microsoft’s Memory Footprint assessment captures memory after the start screen appears and before applications launch. Microsoft explicitly says that this assessment does not represent ordinary computer operation. It is useful for its defined purpose, but it should not be treated as a typical-use benchmark. Microsoft’s assessment documentation also notes that system configurations can vary substantially.
What published examples can—and cannot—show
A Windows 11 desktop with 8 GB
Windows Central reported about 3.8 GB at idle and as much as 7.2 GB while using ten browser tabs and several applications on one Windows 11 desktop with 8 GB of single-channel DDR4-2666. Those are observations from that specific in-use setup, not a Windows 10 comparison or a universal estimate. Read the Windows Central report.

- G.SKILL RipjawsV Series DDR4 U-DIMM Memory Kit, Model: F4-3200C16D-16GVKB
- Non-ECC, DDR4 U-DIMM, 288-pin, for Desktop PC & Gaming

- Do not mix memory kits. Memory kits are sold in matched kits that are designed to run together as a set. Mixing memory kits will result in stability issues or system failure.
An informal test on unsupported legacy hardware
Tom’s Hardware reported an average idle reading of 3.3 GB, peaking at 3.7 GB, in an informal Windows 11 test on a legacy ThinkPad X220. The publication characterized the test as unscientific, and that machine is not officially supported for Windows 11. The relevant report does not give a Windows 10 idle figure, so it cannot establish a same-hardware difference. Read the Tom’s Hardware report.

Why a laptop-generation comparison is not a RAM comparison
A 2023 vendor comparison examined Windows 10 and Windows 11 on different generations of laptops and acknowledged that it could not match every component specification. Results from those groups cannot isolate the operating system’s RAM use on identical hardware. See the comparison and its hardware caveat.

How to make a fair Windows 10-versus-11 comparison
For a meaningful comparison, keep the test conditions as close as possible and record what was measured. A difference in one variable—such as background software or a driver—can affect the result independently of the Windows version.
- Use the same physical computer and firmware. Keep the installed memory and hardware configuration unchanged. If components differ, identify them rather than attributing the result to Windows alone.
- Match the Windows setup. Record the edition and update level, device drivers, and startup or background software for each installation.
- Define the workload. Decide whether you are measuring a settled idle system, ordinary browsing and office use, or memory-intensive work such as editing. Use the same applications and tasks in both versions.
- Record the measurement and timing. Note whether the figure is in-use, available, or from a defined footprint assessment, and when it was captured. If measuring after boot, use the same settling period.
- Judge the user experience as well as the number. Record responsiveness and whether the applications fit in memory. An idle percentage without workload context is incomplete.
Should a high reading prompt a RAM upgrade?
Not on its own. First check whether your actual applications slow down or struggle under your normal workload. If they do, additional memory may help, but compatibility depends on the particular computer. Before buying, check the device’s supported memory generation, form factor, maximum capacity, and whether its RAM can be upgraded. Microsoft’s general memory recommendations do not identify a compatible module for an individual PC.
