These switches limit specific uses of data; they do not stop all Windows diagnostics, remove every ad, or control every app and Microsoft account service.
Windows labels and available controls can vary by update, and some settings may be managed by an organization. The paths below reflect Microsoft’s current documentation.

Turn off Personalized offers
On newer Windows 11 versions, open Settings > Privacy & security > Personalized offers and turn off Get personalized tips, ads, and recommendations based on my Windows activity. Microsoft says these offers may use Windows diagnostic data along with account information and data from other Microsoft products and services. Microsoft explains Personalized offers and Recommendations settings.

Some versions still show the older name, Tailored experiences, under Settings > Privacy & security > Diagnostics & feedback. Microsoft says the label is being replaced in newer versions. See Microsoft’s Diagnostics & feedback guidance.

Limit use of the Windows advertising ID
Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Recommendations & offers and turn off Let apps show my personalized ads by using my advertising ID. Windows creates a unique advertising ID for each device user; apps and ad networks can use it to personalize ads across apps. This switch limits use of that Windows identifier by apps that support it. It does not control cookies or other advertising methods, and it will not reduce the number of ads you see. Microsoft says turning the setting back on resets the ID. Read Microsoft’s description of the advertising ID.
Choose whether to share optional diagnostic data
Open Settings > Privacy & security > Diagnostics & feedback and review the diagnostic-data choice and feedback settings. Where the controls are available, turn off optional data and feedback you do not want to provide.
Windows does not offer a switch to send zero diagnostic data. Microsoft describes Required diagnostic data as supporting Windows updates, security, troubleshooting, accessibility, reliability, performance, compatibility, privacy, and energy efficiency. Optional diagnostic data adds app activity and further details about device health and performance to help improve Windows and related products. If the controls say they are managed by your organization, contact your IT administrator. Microsoft’s diagnostic-data overview explains the categories.

Review app permissions by capability
In Settings > Privacy & security, open permissions such as Location, Camera, Microphone, Contacts, and Calendar. Turn off access for apps that do not need a capability rather than disabling a feature you rely on.
These Windows controls mostly apply to Microsoft Store apps. Desktop applications may not appear in the lists or follow the same permission controls. For those programs, check their own privacy settings and privacy information. Microsoft details which app permissions Windows controls.

Decide whether Windows should save Activity history
Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Activity history. The current switch, Store my activity history on this device, controls local saving. Turning it off can affect on-device features such as Timeline. You can also clear history saved on the device.

Review Location access and account-level location storage

If you are signed in with a Microsoft account and Location services is enabled, Microsoft says your last-known location may be periodically saved to the cloud. You can view or clear it through the account privacy dashboard. Local location-history storage and its related settings were removed in March 2025. Some desktop apps may not appear in Windows’ permission list; third-party technologies may still estimate location with Windows location turned off, and emergency-call location is an exception. Disabling wireless radios can further limit location determination, but also affects connectivity and other device functions, so it is not a routine privacy setting to change. Microsoft explains Windows location behavior and exceptions.

Windows settings do not cover every service linked to a Microsoft account. Microsoft provides separate account-level controls for activity and advertising settings. Edge browsing data may appear depending on history sync and personalized advertising or experience settings. Review the Microsoft privacy dashboard if you want to manage account-level data too; no single dashboard control blocks all processing.
