Their built-in microphones send your voice to a connected phone or computer, while their speakers play audio back to you. In other words, they work as a wireless headset: you can listen and talk through the same earbuds.
What input and output mean for AirPods
An input device sends information to a computer or phone. An output device presents information from it. AirPods handle both directions of audio: their microphones capture sound for the connected device, and their speakers deliver sound from that device to you.

How AirPods provide audio input
Each AirPod has a microphone that can capture your voice for phone calls and Siri. Apple also lets you choose how the microphone is assigned: it can switch automatically between the two AirPods, or you can select the left or right AirPod. Apple Support explains the microphone settings.

How AirPods provide audio output
The earbuds’ speakers play sound from the connected device, such as music, a video, or call audio. On supported AirPods settings, playback stops when you remove an AirPod and resumes when you put it back in, as described in Apple’s AirPods settings guide.
Can AirPods be input and output at the same time?
Yes. During a call, for example, AirPods can play the other person’s voice while their microphones capture yours. Both functions are active through the earbuds, although the connected device and app determine how audio is routed.

What changes when you use AirPods with a non-Apple device?
AirPods can work as a Bluetooth headset with a non-Apple device, allowing you to listen and talk. Apple cautions that functionality may be limited; Siri is unavailable in this setup.
