PC Slower Than It Used to Be?

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo restore one print option in Windows 11, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners, select the printer, then choose Manage > Printing preferences and change the relevant setting. If the driver installation itself seems corrupted, Microsoft’s documented way to refresh its files and settings is to remove the printer, restart the PC, and add it again. Windows does not provide one universal button that resets every printer’s vendor-specific preferences to factory defaults.
Choose the right kind of reset
“Reset printer settings” can mean three different things. The least disruptive option is to restore a specific preference. Reinstalling the printer refreshes the broader driver setup. Clearing queued jobs addresses printing that is stuck, but does not reset driver preferences.

| What is wrong | What to do |
|---|---|
| A setting such as paper type or print quality changed | Open Manage > Printing preferences and adjust that option. Available controls vary by printer and driver. See Microsoft’s printing-preferences guidance. |
| The driver setup or its settings appear corrupted | Remove the printer, restart the PC, and add the printer again to refresh driver files and settings. See Microsoft’s printer installation instructions and driver compatibility guidance. |
| Jobs are stuck in the queue or the Print Spooler has an error | Clear the queue or troubleshoot the Print Spooler separately. These procedures address jobs and service errors, not preference defaults. See Microsoft’s printer troubleshooting steps and Print Spooler guidance. |
Restore an individual printer preference
- Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected printer, then choose Manage > Printing preferences.
- Find the changed option—such as paper size, paper type, or print quality—and select the value you want.
- Apply or save the change if the dialog offers that control, then print a test page or document to check the result.
Preference names and available values depend on the printer model and installed driver. If you do not see an option in Printing preferences, consult the printer maker’s instructions for that specific model rather than assuming Windows has a global default-reset control.
Refresh the printer driver installation
Use this broader procedure when changing preferences is not enough or the driver installation appears damaged. Removing and adding a printer refreshes driver files and settings, but it is not a guarantee that every proprietary preference will return to the same factory value on every printer.

Get a suitable driver if Windows does not install one
Microsoft recommends Windows Update as the preferred source for printer drivers. After reinstalling, check Windows Update for an updated driver. If Windows does not offer a suitable one, identify the exact printer model and download the driver from the manufacturer’s official support page, selecting the package for your Windows version and system type. Microsoft explains the process in its printer driver download and installation guidance.
On Windows on ARM, driver installation can require different handling. Microsoft advises using Add device in Windows Settings unless the manufacturer provides specific instructions for that printer.

If the problem started after a driver update
If printing broke immediately after an update, rolling back the driver may be more appropriate than trying to reset preferences. Microsoft’s compatibility guidance says to use Device Manager, find the printer under Printers or Print queues, open Properties > Driver, and select Roll Back Driver if that option is available. Restart the PC afterward.

If print jobs are stuck instead
A stuck queue is a separate problem from changed driver settings. Open the printer queue and cancel stuck jobs first. If the Print Spooler service is failing, follow Microsoft’s separate guidance for that error, including its instructions on reviewing old or duplicate drivers and restarting the service. Do not treat clearing the queue or restarting the service as a reset of printer preferences.

Check that the change worked
Print a test page after reinstalling, or print a representative document after changing a preference. Confirm that the printer is available, the output reflects the option you changed, and the relevant status or error is gone. If the symptom remains, use the matching branch above—preference, driver installation, driver update, or queue—rather than repeating a broader reset without identifying what is failing.
