What “Print Screen not working” usually means on Windows 11
On Windows 11, the Print Screen key can behave differently depending on your key combo and your workflow (clipboard vs file saving). People often report it as “not working” when one of these is happening:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- No capture at all (nothing happens, no sound, no visual feedback).
- Capture happens but doesn’t save (missing file in Pictures).
- Capture goes to clipboard but you’re not pasting it correctly.
- Wrong behavior (only opens Snipping Tool, or triggers another app’s hotkey).
- It works sometimes (usually a conflict with keyboard firmware, remote desktop, or screen recording software).
Quick checks (takes 2 minutes)
Before changing settings, rule out simple causes.
- Restart Windows once. Many hotkey/capture glitches clear after a reboot.
- Try a different app: open Notepad (or Paint) and press the key again.
- Confirm you aren’t in a modal tool (full-screen snipping overlay, game editor, remote session UI with restricted hotkeys).
- Check if your keyboard has an Fn layer: on many laptops the Print Screen key shares a function.
If you’re on a laptop, also try the exact combo shown on the key itself (commonly Fn + PrtScn).

Fix 1: Verify your key combo and target (PrtScn vs Win+PrtScn)
Windows 11 uses different behavior for different shortcuts. Use this test so you know what’s failing.
Test A: Copy to clipboard with PrtScn
1) Click inside Notepad. 2) Press PrtScn. 3) Press Ctrl + V.
- If an image pastes: your key works; you may just be expecting a file save.
- If nothing pastes: continue to Fix 2 and Fix 3.
Test B: Save to file with Win+PrtScn
Press Win + PrtScn. Then check:
- Pictures → Screenshots
- Also check if a folder exists under
C:\Users\<you>\Pictures\Screenshots.
If the file doesn’t appear, it usually points to a capture service issue or a conflicting hotkey.

Windows 11 screenshot shortcuts rely on Settings options and system components. Make sure you’re not accidentally disabling features.
Enable related features
- Open Settings (press Win + I).
- Go to Accessibility → Keyboard.
- Check if any options are impacting hotkeys (for example, if you have remapping tools installed, disable them temporarily).
- Go to System → Notifications and ensure notifications aren’t completely blocked (some screenshot actions show a brief banner or notification).
- Check Settings → Gaming → Xbox Game Bar: set it to Off temporarily to test for conflicts.
Then re-test PrtScn and Win + PrtScn after each change.

Fix 3: Reset the Snipping Tool and Print Screen capture pipeline
Even if you’re using PrtScn, Windows 11 often routes screenshot capture through the same component that powers Snipping Tool. Resetting it can resolve broken capture hooks.
Reset Snipping Tool (fastest reset)
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Search for Snipping Tool.
- Select it → click Advanced options.
- Under Reset, click Reset.
Reboot after reset if it still doesn’t work.
Optional: Re-register screenshot-related apps
If the reset doesn’t help, re-register the Photos app components and system capture pieces can sometimes stabilize the shortcut pipeline.
- Open Windows Terminal (Admin) (right-click Start → Terminal (Admin)).
- Run:
Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.Windows.ShellExperienceHost | % {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppxManifest.xml"}
Restart and test again.
Fix 4: Check OneDrive/Cloud capture and storage settings
Many users assume Print Screen should save locally, but cloud sync and capture routing can change where the output goes. If you use OneDrive Desktop, confirm it isn’t interfering.
Verify OneDrive is not overriding screenshot destinations
- Right-click the OneDrive cloud icon in the system tray.
- Select Settings.
- Go to the Backup tab.
- Confirm whether Screenshots or Desktop backup is enabled.
- Temporarily disable screenshot/desktop backup, then test Win + PrtScn.
Also check OneDrive’s folder paths (especially if you’re using “Known Folder Move”): screenshots might appear under OneDrive instead of Pictures.

Fix 5: Disable conflicting hotkeys and screen-recording tools
Screen capture conflicts are one of the most common causes of “Print Screen doesn’t work.” Tools that hook keyboard shortcuts can steal PrtScn or block clipboard output.
Temporarily disable likely offenders
Shut down these apps (or disable their hotkeys), then retest:
- Screen recorders: OBS Studio, Bandicam, ShareX, NVIDIA GeForce Experience Overlay
- Gaming overlays: Xbox Game Bar, Discord overlay
- Keyboard remappers: Logitech G Hub, Razer Synapse, SteelSeries GG, AutoHotkey scripts
- Remote tools: TeamViewer-style tools that intercept hotkeys
As a quick test, open Task Manager → Startup apps, disable overlays, reboot, and try again.
Fix 6: Repair system components (DISM and SFC)
If Windows capture components are corrupted, shortcuts can fail silently. DISM and SFC repair the OS image and system files.
Run DISM
- Open Windows Terminal (Admin).
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Run SFC
- After DISM completes
- After DISM completes, run this command:
sfc /scannowLet it finish, restart your PC, and test PrtScn and Win + PrtScn again.

Fix 7: Update or reinstall keyboard/HID drivers
If the Print Screen key is mapped correctly but still doesn’t trigger capture, the problem can be low-level keyboard input (HID). Updating (or reinstalling) the keyboard driver often fixes “hotkey works in some apps but not others” issues.
Update the keyboard (HID) driver
- Right-click Start → Device Manager.
- Expand Keyboards.
- Right-click your keyboard device (or HID Keyboard Device) → Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
If you have multiple keyboard entries, repeat for each one related to HID/keyboard input.
Reinstall the keyboard device (rebinds the driver)
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Keyboards.
- Right-click HID Keyboard Device (or your keyboard) → Uninstall device.
- Confirm and restart your PC.
Windows will reinstall the device automatically on reboot. Then test Print Screen again.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 8: Test whether the Print Screen key is physically responsive
Before blaming Windows, confirm the key itself is sending input. If the key is worn, stuck, or partially failing, you can see behavior like “it sometimes works” or “PrtScn does nothing.”

- Open Start → search for On-Screen Keyboard.
- Enable it and click the PrtScn button (if shown).
- Try pasting in Notepad with Ctrl + V.
- If the on-screen keyboard triggers screenshots: your Windows side is likely fine—focus on hardware/remapping/Fn layers.
- If it also fails: continue with software fixes and conflicts.
Check for stuck keys and firmware layers (laptops especially)
If you’re on a laptop, check whether your Print Screen is paired with a function layer (commonly Fn). Try:

Also inspect the key for physical sticking—press it a few times and make sure no debris is underneath.
Workarounds that always work in the meantime
If you need screenshots right now, you don’t have to wait for the root fix. These options are the fastest “get it done” alternatives on Windows 11:
- Win + Shift + S (Snipping Tool overlay): select an area and save/copy immediately.
- Alt + PrtScn (active window capture): tries to grab only the current window.
- Snipping Tool app: open it manually, then choose New and screenshot as normal.
- Microsoft Paint fallback: if you can copy to clipboard, paste and save from there.

- Only testing in one app (Windows hotkeys can behave differently). Always test in Notepad and also check Pictures > Screenshots.
- Changing multiple settings at once. Update one thing, reboot if needed, then retest so you know what actually worked.
- Ignoring Fn/hotkey layers on laptops. Many “broken Print Screen” cases are just the wrong key combo.
- Forgetting overlays and remappers. Game recorders and keyboard software are frequent culprits.
- Assuming the key is fine. A physically failing key can still “sometimes” work, which makes the issue harder to diagnose.
FAQs
Why does PrtScn copy to clipboard but not save a file?
That usually means Windows can capture, but file-saving (the “Win + PrtScn” path) is failing or being rerouted. Start with Fix 2 (settings) and Fix 3 (reset Snipping Tool pipeline), then check OneDrive in Fix 4.

Please review EULA and Privacy policy. Is Xbox Game Bar or Discord overlay able to break Print Screen?
Yes. Overlays commonly hook keyboard shortcuts for recording or quick actions. Fix 5 is specifically designed to isolate that conflict—turn them off temporarily, reboot, and retest.
Will DISM and SFC fix a keyboard hotkey problem?
They won’t change your keyboard hardware, but they can repair Windows capture components that the Print Screen shortcuts rely on. If screenshots fail silently, Fix 6 is worth doing.
What if I don’t want to troubleshoot and just need screenshots now?
Use Win + Shift + S or the Snipping Tool app. Those routes bypass the exact behavior that may be broken for the Print Screen key.
Bottom Line
When Print Screen “stops working” on Windows 11, it’s almost always one of three things: the wrong key behavior (PrtScn vs Win+PrtScn), a capture pipeline/service glitch, or a conflict from overlays/remappers. Start with the quick combo tests, reset Snipping Tool if needed, then move to DISM/SFC and driver updates if the problem persists.
