What Deleting Discord Messages Actually Does
When you delete a message on Discord, it’s removed from the chat view for users who can see that message. For the message author, it disappears from the conversation history as well.

However, Discord deletion isn’t magic. People may have already seen the content (screenshots, notifications, cached previews), and moderation actions can be recorded in logs depending on your server’s settings and roles.
Prerequisites and Key Limits (Read This First)
- You can delete your own messages in DMs and servers.
- To delete other people’s messages, you generally need moderator/admin permissions like Manage Messages (and sometimes additional permissions depending on server configuration).
- Bulk deletion is easiest on desktop (Windows/macOS). Mobile options are more limited and can be inconsistent across app versions.
- Bot messages may be governed by role and permissions. A normal user can’t delete bot messages they don’t own/operate.

How to Delete Your Own Messages
Use these steps to remove messages you’ve sent. The UI names can vary slightly by platform, but the flow is consistent: open the message → open the message menu → choose Delete.

Right-clicking is the fastest method on desktop.
- Open Discord on your Windows PC.
- Find your message in a DM or server channel.
- Right-click the message.
- Select Delete Message.
- Confirm by clicking Delete.
macOS (Discord Desktop App)
On macOS, you can right-click (or Control-click) the message.
- Open Discord on your MacBook (desktop app).
- Locate your message.
- Right-click (or Control-click) the message.
- Choose Delete Message.
- Confirm Delete.
Web Browser (Discord.com)
Web uses the same message context menu.
- Go to
https://discord.comand sign in. - Open the DM or server channel.
- Hover over your message.

iPhone
On iPhone, the delete option is in the long-press message menu.

How to Delete Multiple Discord Messages at Once

- Open Discord on Windows or macOS desktop.
- Find the first message you want to delete.
- Click the message (to focus it).
- Use selection to choose multiple messages (commonly: Shift for range selection, or Ctrl / Command for adding messages).
- With the messages selected, click the delete option from the bulk action menu.
- Confirm deletion.
If you can’t find bulk selection controls, your client version may not support multi-select for that view. Try the web client or update Discord, then retry.
Mobile multi-delete reality check
Mobile can be inconsistent for multi-delete. Many users end up deleting one message at a time on iPhone/iPad/Android because multi-select UI either isn’t present or isn’t available for every chat view.
If you need bulk cleanup, switch to desktop or ask a moderator/admin to clear the channel (if you have permission to do so).
How to Delete Messages from Other People (Moderators/Admins)
To remove messages sent by someone else, you need the right permissions and you should be careful: bulk deletion can erase context that others rely on.
Delete a single message
Use the message context menu for the individual message.
- Open the server channel in Discord.
- Find the message you want to remove.
- Right-click (desktop) or open the message menu (mobile/web).
- Select Delete Message.
- Confirm deletion.
If you don’t see Delete Message for messages you don’t own, you likely lack Manage Messages permission.
Clear a channel (bulk cleanup)
Most servers provide a “bulk delete” workflow for moderators via channel context or moderation tools. The exact wording can vary by client version.
- Open the server and go to the target channel.
- Open channel controls (often via channel name context or channel settings).
- Look for options like Clear Messages or Delete Messages.
- Select the number/time window (if prompted) and confirm.
- Verify the action in the confirmation dialog.
Be cautious: bulk actions can remove many messages in one go, and there’s no “undo” feature.

Special Cases: Threads, Attachments, Edited Messages, and Bot Messages
Discord message deletion is usually straightforward, but edge cases can affect what you see and how fast the UI updates.
Threads
Messages inside threads behave like normal messages. Delete your own messages using the same menu on the message, or delete others only if you have the required permissions.
If you’re not seeing the menu, try expanding the thread and scrolling to ensure the message is fully loaded.

Attachments and files
Deleting a message deletes the message container. Attachments shown inside that message disappear with it. If someone downloaded the file already, their copy remains.
Edited messages
Deleting an edited message removes the entire message record. You don’t need to revert edits first.
Bot messages and audit logs
A bot message can be deleted if you have the right permissions and the UI offers the delete option. On many servers, moderation actions appear in audit logs for accountability.

If the delete option is missing or the deletion fails, don’t keep clicking—diagnose the cause. Most issues come down to permissions, stale app state, or caching.
Common causes
- You’re not the author and you lack Manage Messages.
- Server permissions changed (role update, permission sync delay).
- App is out of date or a client bug is blocking UI actions.
- Connectivity issues cause the delete request to time out.
- Rate limiting after many rapid deletions (especially bulk actions).
What to try
- Refresh the chat view: switch channels and return, or reload the browser tab.
- Try another platform: delete the same message via web instead of mobile, or vice versa.
- Restart Discord (desktop) or force-close and reopen (mobile).
- Check permissions: confirm your role can manage messages.
- Wait and retry: if you deleted several messages in a row, pause for 10–30 seconds.
- Update Discord: make sure you’re on the latest stable client.
If deletion still fails, take note of the exact UI error (if shown) and try again after switching networks (Wi‑Fi ↔ cellular) to rule out request failures.

- Assuming you can delete others’ messages without moderator permissions.

Can I delete a message after someone replied to it?
Yes—if it’s your message, Discord lets you delete it regardless of replies. Replies will remain, but the deleted message content will no longer be visible.
Will deleting a Discord message remove it from other people’s notifications?
No. Notifications and screenshots are outside Discord’s control. Deleting removes the message from the chat, but it can’t undo anything already received.
Can I delete messages in a server where I’m just a member?

Can moderators delete messages permanently?
