Microsoft’s September 22, 2026 preview update, KB5124010, adds two practical changes to Windows 11 PCs: Bluetooth Classic Audio accessories can now trigger the Windows volume flyout when their controls are used during voice calls, and a dedicated Copilot key can be reassigned to Right Ctrl or the Context Menu key. The changes address two long-standing usability issues without requiring a new accessory.
What KB5124010 changes
KB5124010 is a Windows 11 preview update released on September 22, 2026. Its Bluetooth improvement concerns accessories using Bluetooth Classic Audio during voice calls. When you change call volume with the accessory’s physical controls, Windows now displays the shell volume flyout on the PC, providing visual confirmation of the adjustment.

The same update introduces a keyboard setting for devices with a dedicated Copilot key. Depending on the options exposed by the PC, the key can act as either Right Ctrl or the Context Menu key instead. That lets users restore familiar shortcuts and workflows that were displaced when manufacturers placed Copilot on a keyboard location traditionally occupied by one of those keys.

| Change | What you see or can do | Scope and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Bluetooth call-volume feedback | Adjust volume on a connected accessory during a voice call and the Windows shell volume flyout appears. | Applies to Bluetooth Classic Audio accessories; the update does not establish behavior for every Bluetooth profile or accessory. |
| Copilot-key remapping | Choose Right Ctrl or Context Menu in Windows keyboard settings when those choices are offered. | Designed for Windows 11 devices equipped with a dedicated Copilot key; availability can vary by installed Windows version and device configuration. |
How to remap the Copilot key
- Install the applicable Windows 11 update, including KB5124010 where it is offered for your system.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Bluetooth & devices > Keyboard.
- Locate the Copilot-key control.
- Select Right Ctrl or Context Menu, then close Settings.
Right Ctrl is useful when applications, terminal tools or accessibility workflows depend on that specific modifier. Context Menu restores the keyboard key commonly used to open an item’s shortcut menu, which can be particularly important when a user avoids mouse interaction or relies on established keyboard navigation.

If the control is missing
- Run Windows Update and check whether a newer preview or regular update is available.
- Confirm the installed Windows 11 version and update history.
- Check the PC manufacturer’s support information for keyboard-specific firmware or configuration requirements.
- Do not assume that the absence of the setting proves the keyboard is incompatible: Microsoft’s published guidance does not define a universal device-by-device availability rule.
How the Bluetooth call-volume feedback works
Pair a Bluetooth Classic Audio headset or another supported audio accessory, start a voice call, and adjust volume from the accessory itself. Windows should show its normal shell volume flyout while the call is active. The flyout is visual feedback that the operating system received the accessory’s volume command; it is not evidence of a particular latency, battery-life improvement or audio-quality change.
The documented behavior is limited to volume changes made during voice calls. It does not establish that every Bluetooth headset, newer Bluetooth profile or media-playback scenario will display the same flyout. If nothing appears, verify that the accessory is connected, the call is active and the device is using Bluetooth Classic Audio rather than another connection mode.

Why Microsoft added the keyboard option
Microsoft says some newer Windows 11 devices put a dedicated Copilot key where Right Ctrl or the Context Menu key had been. Customers who depend on those keys for shortcuts or assistive technologies, including screen readers, could therefore lose established workflows. The new setting provides an operating-system-level way to preserve one of those functions instead of forcing users to change every shortcut or accessibility routine.

- The update provides a visible Windows response to supported accessory volume commands during calls.
- It provides two documented remapping targets: Right Ctrl and Context Menu.
- It does not add a general-purpose key-remapping system for arbitrary keys.
- Microsoft has published no authoritative statistics for adoption, reliability, latency, performance or battery life for either change.
- The update does not endorse or certify individual keyboard, headset or headphone models.
What to check when choosing or troubleshooting hardware
For a keyboard, verify that it runs Windows 11, includes the dedicated Copilot key in question and can preserve the Right Ctrl or Context Menu workflow you need. For a headset, check Windows 11 support, Bluetooth Classic Audio support and the accessory’s call controls. Warranty and return terms matter if a device’s firmware or profile behavior differs from the published Windows expectation.

If remapping works but a shortcut still fails, test both target choices: applications may distinguish Right Ctrl from another modifier, while the Context Menu function depends on the program receiving that key event. If call-volume feedback fails, reconnect the accessory, confirm it is the active call device and test again during an actual voice call rather than ordinary media playback.
