Windows 11 Performance Tweaks: Which Ones Are Worth Trying?

Microsoft-supported ways to investigate a slow Windows 11 PC, with clear trade-offs and no promise of a universal speed boost.

There is no evidence here that the commonly recommended Windows 11 tweaks deliver a universal, measurable speed boost. Microsoft does support several targeted changes—especially checking startup apps, resource use, updates, and visual effects—but whether they help depends on what is slowing your PC. Treat them as diagnostics and problem-specific adjustments, not a guaranteed speed-up recipe.

Start by identifying what feels slow

A slow PC can have several causes at once. Microsoft lists limited storage, too many startup apps, outdated software, and hardware that no longer meets current performance needs among the possible contributors. A setting change aimed at one cause will not necessarily fix another.

Before changing settings, open Task Manager and look at CPU, memory, and disk activity while the slowdown occurs. Note which process is using resources and whether the problem happens during sign-in, during a particular app, or all the time. Microsoft recommends monitoring these resources to help identify heavy processes; this is a way to narrow the problem, not proof that any one process is the sole cause.

Check startup apps if sign-in or startup is slow

Apps that launch automatically can affect startup time and overall performance. In Windows 11, open Settings > Apps > Startup, or open Task Manager and select Startup apps. Task Manager shows startup-impact labels and additional information. Disable only apps you do not need to launch automatically; you can still open them when you want to use them.

Microsoft Support defines the labels using measured CPU and disk activity associated with startup: Low Impact means total CPU use under 300 milliseconds and total disk use under 292 kilobytes; Medium Impact means CPU use under one second but over 300 milliseconds, or disk use under 3 megabytes but over 292 kilobytes; and High Impact means CPU use over one second or disk use over 3 megabytes. These are classification thresholds, not predictions of how much faster your whole PC will feel if you disable an app.

Try visual-effects changes only if interface responsiveness is the issue

Windows visual effects use system resources, and Microsoft says adjusting them can improve responsiveness. To reduce those effects, search Windows for Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows, open the matching result, then choose Adjust for best performance on the Visual Effects tab.

This can reduce interface embellishments. Microsoft does not establish a universal or quantified improvement, so do not assume it will raise game frame rates, shorten boot time, or make every app faster. If you dislike the appearance, return to the same dialog and select a different setting.

Use Best performance power mode when its trade-off suits you

Windows 11 offers Best performance at Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode. Microsoft says this mode can help the CPU run at higher performance when needed, with the qualification that it is for situations where power usage is not a concern.

That makes it a conditional choice, such as when you are plugged in and prioritizing performance. It is not a free improvement for every laptop user: choose a mode that fits your power needs.

Install relevant updates and check what is consuming resources

Check Windows Update, including optional driver updates that are relevant to your device. Microsoft notes that updates often include fixes and performance improvements, but an update is not a guarantee that a particular slowdown will be resolved.

If Task Manager shows sustained CPU, memory, or disk use, investigate the process responsible before applying broad system changes. The useful next step depends on the process and when the slowdown occurs; indiscriminately disabling services can remove functionality without addressing the actual bottleneck.

Use a clean boot to investigate suspected software conflicts

If a specific app behaves badly and you suspect another app or service is interfering, Microsoft’s clean-boot procedure can help isolate the conflict. A clean boot starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. If the problem disappears, re-enable startup items and services systematically until you identify the cause.

A clean boot is a troubleshooting environment, not a permanent debloating strategy. Microsoft warns that the computer may temporarily lose functionality while in that environment. Follow Microsoft’s clean-boot instructions for your Windows version and restore normal startup after the investigation.

Be cautious with registry and service-tweak lists

Registry edits and disabling services can have unintended consequences. Microsoft’s startup-app guidance recommends care with registry modifications and keeping a backup. Avoid copying a list of registry edits or service changes from an unknown source just because it is presented as a performance tweak. A change that is unsuitable for your configuration may cause problems without improving the slowdown you are trying to fix.

Know when the limit is hardware

Microsoft cautions that older PCs with outdated hardware may see little improvement from software adjustments; upgrading the device may be the better long-term solution. A storage upgrade is relevant only when evidence points to storage throughput as a bottleneck, and only if the computer supports a compatible drive. Microsoft’s engineering guidance explains that boot-loaded processes consume CPU and disk resources and that disk throughput matters during startup; a faster HDD or SSD can mitigate the effect of significant software preload. Check compatibility with the device manufacturer before considering an internal SSD upgrade.

There is no evidence-backed universal ranking of these tweaks or a published gain that applies to every PC. To judge a change on your own machine, compare the same task before and after under similar conditions, and consider its trade-off—such as power use, reduced visual effects, or possible loss of functionality—alongside any observed difference.
