For a video shot against a flat, evenly lit white backdrop, use a browser editor’s Chroma Key or Green Screen tool: sample the white, then adjust the key until the background disappears without erasing white details in the subject. For a person in front of an uneven or busy scene, an AI background remover may work better. Before exporting, decide whether you need a normal video with a background baked in or a genuinely transparent cutout.
Choose the method that matches your footage
| Footage and goal | Try this | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| One consistent white backdrop; any kind of subject | Chroma key / Green Screen | Shadows, creases, or changing shades of white can leave patches. Raising sensitivity may also remove white parts of the subject. |
| A person against an uneven or busy background | AI person-background remover | Availability and supported subjects vary by tool. VEED says its remover is for clips containing a person and works best with clear, well-lit HD footage. |
| Reusable cutout to place over different backgrounds | Export an alpha-capable format, if the tool and destination support it | A checkerboard in the preview is not proof the downloaded file contains transparency. |
| Finished clip with white or another solid background | Add the chosen background, then export a standard video | The background is baked into the exported picture; it is not a reusable transparent cutout. |
Chroma key removes a sampled colour range, so it is the direct choice for uniformly white footage. VEED describes its Green Screen tool as removing one solid colour and recommends even lighting; Tembrica lists white as a supported key colour. These are the vendors’ descriptions, not independent quality tests. VEED’s instructions and Tembrica’s feature page explain their respective options.

Remove a flat white background with chroma key
- Open the clip in a browser editor. Use an editor that offers a Chroma Key, Green Screen, or similarly named colour-key control. Labels and menus differ between services.
- Select the video clip and enable the key. In VEED, the documented workflow uses the Green Screen feature and a colour picker. The help page is dated August 21, 2026; check the current interface if its labels have changed.
- Sample the white backdrop. Pick a clean area away from the subject, shadows, and highlights. If the white varies across the frame, one sample may not remove it evenly.
- Adjust sensitivity or range gradually. Watch the subject’s edges and any white clothing, hair highlights, props, or other pale details as you tune it. Stop before those details start disappearing. VEED documents a sensitivity slider; controls and names vary by editor.
- Preview the whole clip. Check different frames, not just the opening image. Movement, changing light, and shadows can reveal leftover background or damage to the subject.
- Choose an export suited to the destination. If you want a finished white-backed clip, place white behind the keyed subject and export a regular video. If you want to reuse the cutout, continue with the transparency checks below.
A key that looks clean on one frame may fail elsewhere if the backdrop is not uniform. If increasing the range starts eating into the subject before all the background is removed, try AI removal for a person or consider whether the footage can be edited acceptably with a solid background instead.

AI removal can be more suitable when the background is ordinary, uneven, or busy rather than a single colour. The cited VEED help page describes its Background Remover for videos containing a person and says clear, well-lit HD footage works best. Do not assume that a person-focused feature will isolate objects, animals, or every kind of scene.

VEED says free users have full Green Screen access and one free Background Remover try, while paid plans have full access to both. It also states that its exported videos are never transparent: you must add a background or export with a colour behind the subject. These are VEED’s own current feature and plan statements; confirm them in its help article before relying on them.
Transparent cutout or ordinary video?
“Background removed” can mean two different exports. A flattened video has a chosen colour or image behind the subject as part of the picture. A transparent video carries an alpha channel, which allows a compatible editor to place the subject over a different background later. A standard H.264 MP4 cannot carry alpha; BGRemove describes VP9 WebM as an alpha-capable option. Tembrica lists WebM VP8/VP9 and ProRes 4444 among its formats for preserving alpha. Format support depends on both the exporting tool and the app that will open the file, so check the destination editor’s current format documentation.

| Export choice | What the file contains | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Flattened MP4 | Subject plus a solid or chosen background in the picture | You need a conventional finished video and do not need to change its background later. |
| Alpha-capable export, such as WebM VP9 or ProRes 4444 where supported | Video with transparency information, if the exporter creates alpha and the destination reads it | You need to composite the cutout over another scene or background in a compatible app. |
Tool descriptions are not a guarantee that every export setting preserves alpha. VEED explicitly says its exports are never transparent, so do not use it on the assumption that a checkerboard preview will produce a transparent download. BGRemove and Tembrica describe alpha-capable output options on their BGRemove tool page and Tembrica product page; verify the selected settings and test the resulting file.

VEED: colour key or person-focused AI
VEED documents both Green Screen/Chroma Key for a solid-colour background and an AI remover for videos with a person. Its workflow includes picking the key colour and adjusting sensitivity. Its help page says exports are not transparent, making it suitable when you can add the final background before exporting rather than when you need an alpha cutout. See VEED’s help article for its feature and plan details.
Tembrica: AI, chroma key, and listed alpha formats
Tembrica describes AI removal for ordinary footage and chroma key for flat green, blue, black, or white backgrounds. It lists transparent WebM, ProRes 4444, animated WebP, and APNG, and says MP4 paints the background into the picture. The product page also describes browser processing with WebAssembly/WebGPU and brush cleanup. Treat these as vendor-stated capabilities and confirm that your destination supports the format you choose. Details are on Tembrica’s product page.

BGRemove: AI removal with transparent WebM or solid-colour MP4
BGRemove describes AI removal without a green screen and offers transparent WebM or solid-colour MP4 output. Its tool page states an allowance of three videos per 24-hour window; its homepage says uploaded clips must be shorter than 60 seconds and describes credit-based, pay-as-you-go pricing. These are changeable vendor limits, not universal browser-editor rules. Check the tool page and homepage for current terms.
Transparency Render: local-browser chroma keying
Transparency Render describes local browser colour keying with similarity, edge, and despill controls, and lists WebM, MKV, ProRes 4444, or GIF outputs. It warns that large files may process slowly or run out of memory, and recommends desktop browsers for longer clips. Those are the service’s own descriptions and constraints; see Transparency Render for current details.

Check that the downloaded file really has transparency
- Import the export into an editor or browser tool that supports its format. A preview checkerboard alone may only indicate how the editor displays the canvas.
- Put a coloured background layer behind the video. Choose a colour that contrasts with the subject and with the original white backdrop.
- Inspect the composite. If the colour shows around and behind the subject, the file and playback path are interpreting transparency. If a white rectangle remains, the export may be flattened, the selected format may not support alpha, or the app may not interpret that format’s alpha channel.
- If it fails, try a short test export in a format documented by both the browser tool and destination editor. This separates an export-setting problem from a compatibility problem before you process a longer clip.
Browser and editor support varies, so test the actual format in the app where you plan to use it. Chrome’s developer documentation explains alpha transparency in video at Alpha transparency in Chrome video.
Quick Recap
Common problems and what to try
- White patches remain: the backdrop may have shadows, creases, or uneven lighting. Sample a representative area and adjust the key carefully; if the subject begins disappearing before the patches do, a single-colour key may not suit the footage.
- White parts of the subject vanish: the key range is affecting similar colours in the foreground. Reduce sensitivity or range and inspect the edges and pale details again.
- The preview is transparent but the export is white: the downloaded file may be flattened, or the viewer may not interpret alpha. Use the coloured-background composite check rather than relying on the preview.
- The file looks like a white box in another editor: verify that the export format carries alpha and that the receiving editor supports that exact format. A standard H.264 MP4 is not an alpha-video format.
- Processing stalls on a long or large clip: browser memory and service limits differ. Transparency Render specifically warns that larger files can be slow or run out of memory; try a desktop browser or a shorter test clip.
