Microsoft’s release note describes the change narrowly: “This update fixes an issue that could cause mouse input to stutter in some games.” The note does not name every affected title, mouse model, driver, or hardware configuration, and Microsoft has published no prevalence or failure-rate statistic.
What the fix does—and what it does not promise
It targets input stutter
The change is aimed at irregular mouse input reported in some games after Windows activity. If your cursor movement or camera control briefly pauses or jumps while the game otherwise continues running, the applicable cumulative update is the relevant Windows-side remedy.

It is not a universal performance upgrade
Installing the update does not promise a frame-rate increase, a lower measured input-latency figure, or a fix for every form of hitching. Stutter caused by shader compilation, a graphics-driver problem, a game patch, USB power management, thermal throttling, or background software can remain.
Check your Windows 11 version before installing
- Open Settings.
- Select System, then About.
- Under Windows specifications, check the Version entry and note whether the system is x64 or Arm64.
- Match the version to the table above. Do not install KB5127646 merely because its number is different; it is the package for 26H1, while KB5127648 covers 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2.
You can also open Settings > Windows Update > Update history after installation and search the quality-update list for the relevant KB number.

How to install the update
Windows Update (recommended for most PCs)
- Save work and close games and other applications.
- Go to Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install KB5127648 for 24H2, 25H2, or 26H2, or KB5127646 for 26H1, when offered.
- Restart when Windows requests it. A restart is required before the replacement input components are active.
- Launch the game that showed the problem and test mouse movement under the same conditions as before.
Managed, manual, and offline deployment
Organizations can approve the update through Windows Update for Business or distribute it with WSUS. Administrators who need a manual package can use the Microsoft Update Catalog. Select the package matching the Windows release and architecture; Microsoft publishes separate x64 and Arm64 entries.

Important servicing-lifecycle issue for Windows 11 24H2
Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro reached the end of updates with the October 2026 monthly security update. If your gaming PC is running one of those editions, receiving this package should not be treated as a reason to remain on an unsupported release. Move to a supported Windows 11 version through the normal feature-update path when your hardware and applications are ready. Unsupported systems may stop receiving future security and reliability fixes.
Other problems mentioned with the October updates
Microsoft also associates the October cumulative updates with resolutions for selected earlier issues, including crashes in applications that use AC-3 audio and certain failures that produced a black screen or prevented the desktop from loading. Those fixes are separate from the mouse-stutter correction. If your symptom is a black screen, a desktop that never appears, or an application crash, record the exact error and Windows version rather than assuming the gaming-input change is responsible.

If mouse stutter continues after the KB installs
First confirm that the update is listed in Settings > Windows Update > Update history and that Windows has restarted. Then isolate causes that Microsoft’s release note does not cover:

- Install the latest patch supplied by the game developer and retest with in-game overlays disabled.
- Update the mouse’s firmware and its USB or wireless receiver software from the hardware maker.
- Install a current graphics driver, or test the previous stable driver if the issue began immediately after a driver change.
- Temporarily close RGB utilities, capture tools, hardware monitors, browser windows, and other background programs that hook mouse input.
- Try a different USB port, remove an unpowered hub, and compare wired and wireless operation where possible.
- Check whether the stutter occurs in one title only. A single-game symptom points more strongly toward that game’s patch, settings, or input layer than toward Windows itself.
These checks are general troubleshooting possibilities, not additional fixes identified by Microsoft for KB5127648 or KB5127646. If the problem remains, document the Windows build, game version, mouse model, connection type, driver versions, and a reproducible sequence before contacting the game or hardware vendor.
