Windows 11 Notification Center: Find the Clock and Show Notification Times

Windows 11’s clock lives in the taskbar system tray, while notification times belong to individual alerts. Here’s where to find each and how to restore the clock.

Windows 11 does not provide a separate, always-visible clock inside the Notification Center list. To open Notification Center and its calendar, select the taskbar clock or notification bell, press Windows key+N, or swipe in from the screen edge on a touch device. If the taskbar clock is missing, turn it back on in Date & time settings.

Open Notification Center and the calendar

Select the clock or notification-bell icon on the taskbar, or press Windows key+N. On a touch device, swipe in from the side of the screen. Microsoft describes the calendar and notification area as a way to access both the calendar and Notification Center (Microsoft Support: Customize the Taskbar in Windows).

Show the taskbar clock and date

  1. Select Start > Settings > Time & language > Date & time.
  2. Turn on Show time and date in the System tray.

You can also right-click the taskbar clock and choose Adjust date and time to open the relevant settings. The exact labels may vary by Windows 11 build; Microsoft’s taskbar guidance covers the clock’s show/hide control (Microsoft Support: Set time, date, and time zone settings in Windows).

Show seconds in the taskbar clock

In the same Date & time area, turn on Show seconds in system tray clock. Microsoft notes that showing seconds uses more power, but does not quantify the additional usage (Microsoft Support: Customize the Taskbar in Windows).

See the time on an individual notification

A notification timestamp is different from the taskbar’s system clock. If a notification shows an arrow beside its time, select the arrow to expand the notification and reveal additional details or actions. This is a per-notification display, not a persistent clock in the Notification Center panel (Microsoft Support: Notifications and Do Not Disturb in Windows).

Why the clock may be missing

Windows supports hiding the time and date in the system tray; Microsoft described that capability in its September 26, 2023 configuration-update notes. If the switch or its wording differs on your device, use the taskbar clock’s Adjust date and time shortcut to reach settings. The cited guidance does not establish that every Windows 11 build uses identical labels (Microsoft Support: September 26, 2023—Windows configuration update).
