Windows 11 New Features: What’s New in Version 26H2

Windows 11 version 26H2 is rolling out to eligible 24H2 and 25H2 PCs. Here’s what’s changing—and what remains a preview or requires Copilot+ hardware.

Windows 11 version 26H2 is Microsoft’s latest announced feature update, as of September 29, 2026. It is available to eligible PCs running version 24H2 or 25H2 through a controlled rollout. Recent improvements focus on File Explorer, system responsiveness, personalization, widgets, connectivity, accessibility and selected AI experiences—but individual features may still be previews or limited to specific hardware.

What’s new in Windows 11?

The changes are a mix of broad quality work and features with narrower availability. Microsoft’s July 2026 progress update describes ongoing work to make Windows more responsive and reliable, improve File Explorer, add personalization options, refine widgets and improve connectivity. It does not report a single performance figure or promise that every change is available on every PC.

Improvement area What Microsoft has described Availability described by Microsoft
Windows 11 version 26H2 A feature update delivered to eligible 24H2 and 25H2 devices; for many, it activates functionality already delivered through monthly updates. Announced available to eligible devices through a controlled rollout; compatibility safeguard holds may delay an offer.
File Explorer Work on responsiveness, reliability, Home, the address bar, file-size display, keyboard navigation and renaming. Some improvements are described in Microsoft quality updates; the redesigned context menu was rolling out to Windows Insiders when announced in August 2026.
Taskbar, Start and widgets Taskbar-position changes, more Start personalization, and a quieter widgets and feed experience with more user control. Previewed or ongoing work in Microsoft’s July 2026 progress report; not guaranteed for all PCs.
AI experiences Selected File Explorer actions and other AI features, alongside changes that make Copilot-related controls clearer or less prominent in some apps. Some experiences are Copilot+ PC-specific; other changes may arrive through app updates or staged rollouts.
Connectivity and system quality Work involving USB4 docking, Bluetooth compatibility, printer discovery and system responsiveness. Described as quality improvements, without a guaranteed result for every device.

What is changing in File Explorer?

Microsoft’s quality work targets delays and hangs as well as everyday usability. Its July 2026 update describes architecture work and refinements to Home, the address bar, file-size formatting, keyboard navigation and renaming. A May update says Details view can display appropriate units such as KB, MB and GB instead of showing file sizes only in KB. It also describes improved handling of paths containing double backslashes and quotation marks. These reports describe work and rollouts, not a guarantee that every PC has received each change.

Redesigned context menu is an Insider rollout

On August 17, 2026, Microsoft announced a redesigned File Explorer context menu intended to be faster and simpler, with common actions easier to reach and controls for what appears. At announcement, it was rolling out to Windows Insiders. Do not assume it is available in the standard Windows release unless Microsoft’s current release information confirms that status. What’s changing in the taskbar, Start and widgets?

Microsoft’s July 2026 progress report says it began previewing taskbar position changes and additional Start personalization in May. It also describes previewing a quieter-by-default widgets and feed experience with more user control. These are previewed or ongoing changes in that report, rather than features confirmed for every Windows 11 installation. Their precise availability depends on rollout and build.

What Windows 11 AI features require a Copilot+ PC?

Some AI experiences are explicitly tied to Copilot+ PCs, but the general quality, File Explorer, connectivity and customization work described here does not mean you need to buy a new PC. Microsoft’s October 2025 overview identifies improved AI experiences on Copilot+ PCs and describes selected AI actions for images and documents in File Explorer. AI-related app changes are not all the same feature. In May 2026, Microsoft said it was removing the “Ask Copilot” button from Snipping Tool and Photos, and replacing a generic Copilot icon in Notepad with a clearer “Writing Tools” label. The post said those changes were rolling out through Microsoft Store updates. Microsoft’s May 2026 progress update and its October 2025 overview of Windows 11 experiences describe these separate developments.

How do I get the Windows 11 2026 Update?

Microsoft announced version 26H2 on September 29, 2026, for eligible devices already running Windows 11 version 24H2 or 25H2. To receive it as soon as Microsoft offers it to your device:

Rank #3
  1. Open Settings > Windows Update.
  2. Turn on Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available.
  3. Select Check for updates. If version 26H2 is offered, follow the prompts to download and install it, then restart when asked.

Microsoft uses a controlled rollout and can apply safeguard holds when it identifies a compatibility issue. So a PC can meet the stated version eligibility and still not receive the offer immediately. For many eligible devices, 26H2 is an enablement package: Microsoft says it activates features already included through earlier monthly servicing updates, making installation similar to a monthly update and requiring a restart. More detail is in Microsoft’s Windows 11 2026 Update guidance.

Does Windows 11 26H2 change support dates?

Microsoft says version 26H2 resets the supported-edition lifecycle: 24 months for Home and Pro, and 36 months for Enterprise and Education. These are the lifecycle terms Microsoft stated for this release; check its current lifecycle information for the dates and details applicable to your edition. The update announcement explains the release and eligibility, while Microsoft’s July 2026 Windows quality update describes the broader reliability and usability work.
