Windows 11 Network Discovery Off: What It Means for Your Printer

Turning off Network discovery can disrupt automatic access to shared printers, but it does not turn off a printer or remove a local USB installation. See the differences and reconnection steps.

Turning off Network discovery makes your Windows 11 PC harder for other devices on the local network to find. It can prevent automatic discovery of a printer shared from that PC and may complicate connecting to a printer shared by another PC. It does not switch off the printer or, by itself, remove a printer already installed in Windows. USB and other locally connected printers are a separate case.

What “printer discovery” means in Windows 11

Windows’ relevant setting is Network discovery, not a printer-only switch. Microsoft explains that a PC on a Public network is hidden from other devices and file and printer sharing is unavailable; on a Private network, the PC is discoverable and those sharing features are available. See Microsoft’s overview of network settings in Windows.

Printer sharing also depends on more than discovery: the printer must be shared on its host PC, the host must be on and connected, and the computers must be able to reach each other on the network. Microsoft’s setup instructions cover these requirements in Share a printer as a network printer.

What changes for each kind of printer

Printer connection Effect of turning off Network discovery What to know
Shared from another Windows PC Windows may not find or connect to it through automatic discovery. Sharing configuration, network reachability, host power and connectivity, and credentials can also affect access.
Connected directly to the network, including Wi-Fi Discovery or automatic listing may be affected, but a missing listing alone does not prove that printing is disabled. Windows has a separate network-printer installation path; a wireless printer and the PC should be on the same wireless network.
Connected directly to the PC by USB or another wired connection Network discovery is not the installation method for this local connection. Microsoft documents local printer setup separately from adding a network printer.

Microsoft distinguishes these installation paths in Add or install a printer in Windows. A printer disappearing from a list is not the same as the printer being powered off, a missing driver, an unreachable host, or a failure in printing itself.

Why a shared printer may not appear

When a printer is shared from another PC, automatic discovery is just one part of the connection. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance identifies possible issues including network settings, sharing configuration, driver mismatches, and Windows security changes. So discovery being off is one possible explanation, not a universal diagnosis. The host PC must be reachable, the printer must be shared, and the computers generally need to be on the same local network. Some connections require the host PC’s credentials. See Microsoft’s shared-printer troubleshooting steps.

How to reconnect to a shared printer

  1. Check sharing on the host PC. Open the printer’s Printer properties and check the Sharing tab to confirm that printer sharing is enabled.
  2. Check that the host is reachable. Make sure both PCs are on the same local network and that the host PC is on and connected. To test access, enter \ComputerName in File Explorer, replacing ComputerName with the host PC’s name.
  3. Use a trusted Private network for sharing. Check that Network discovery and File and printer sharing are enabled for the appropriate network profile.
  4. Add the printer manually if it is not listed. On the PC that needs the printer, go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners, select Add device, then Add manually, and choose Select a shared printer by name. Enter \ComputerNamePrinterShareName using the host PC and the printer’s share name. Microsoft also documents host-IP formats for a manual shared-printer connection.
  5. Provide host credentials if prompted. Use an account authorized to access the host PC.

Manual entry can bypass the need to locate a printer in an automatic list, but it cannot make an unreachable host, unshared printer, or misconfigured connection work by itself.

Choose the network profile with security in mind

Windows sets a newly connected network to Public by default. Microsoft describes Public as hiding the PC from other devices and making file and printer sharing unavailable. Use Private only for a network you trust. Do not change a public hotspot to Private just to make a printer appear; connect to a trusted network and configure sharing there. Microsoft’s guidance is in Essential network settings and tasks in Windows.

What turning discovery off does not establish

The setting concerns whether the PC is discoverable and supports network sharing; it is not a guarantee that every printer will stop working or that every shared printer will remain reachable through another method. Windows’ documented steps do not establish the behavior of every printer model, third-party discovery method, firewall setup, enterprise policy, or network configuration. For a local USB printer, use the local installation path; for a shared printer, check sharing and reachability as well as discovery.
