The composite retained much of the MOF’s fluorescence, but its final conductivity remained modest: the 2016 result demonstrated a material, not a working optoelectronic device.
How the researchers added a conducting polymer
The team worked with a fluorescent three-dimensional framework, [Cd(NDC)0.5(PCA)]·Gx, whose structure contains one-dimensional nanochannels. They loaded the channels with pyrrole, a redox-active monomer, then immersed the material in iodine solution to induce polymerization. The resulting polypyrrole (PPy) chains formed inside the MOF’s pores.

The authors attributed the improved electron transport to the oriented polymer chains and interactions between the MOF host and its polymer guests. In other words, the framework provided a confined environment for forming conducting chains; it was not simply mixed with a bulk quantity of polymer.

Dhara and co-authors reported an approximately nine-orders-of-magnitude increase in bulk electrical conductivity. A change of nine orders of magnitude is roughly a billion-fold increase relative to the starting material. The same paper reported these carrier and optical properties:

The authors said fluorescence was almost retained. The emission wavelength also shifted from 385 nm in the original MOF to 520 nm in the composite, so retention does not mean the optical response was unchanged.
Why a billion-fold increase did not mean high conductivity
A very large relative change can begin from a value close to negligible and still end at a modest absolute value. Chemistry World quoted Aron Walsh, who investigates electroactive MOFs at Imperial College London, describing the change as “from negligible to very small.” He said the final value was at the lower end of conductivity found in typical inorganic semiconductors and in polypyrrole itself.

That distinction matters when interpreting the headline: the result showed that polymerizing pyrrole within this framework substantially changed its electrical behavior, not that the composite became a highly conductive material by ordinary device standards.

The paper presented a prototype materials experiment that could inform the design of conductive, fluorescent MOFs. Solar cells and imaging devices were mentioned as possible application areas, but the reported work did not demonstrate either device. It establishes a specific synthesis and a reported change in conductivity and optical behavior; it does not establish a commercial product or the present state of later research.
