How do I change Narrator math reading navigation mode in Windows 11? If you want Narrator to speak mathematical symbols, change its Math punctuation level. If you want to change how the Narrator cursor moves through an app, change Navigation mode in Narrator Settings. These are separate settings; scan mode is a third, separate feature.
Make Narrator speak mathematical symbols
Microsoft describes the Math punctuation level as making Narrator speak “most mathematical symbols.” It changes how punctuation and symbols are read, not how the Narrator cursor navigates.

- Start Narrator if it is not already running. By default, the Narrator key is Caps Lock or Insert.
- Press Narrator + Alt + ] to cycle forward through punctuation levels, or Narrator + Alt + [ to cycle backward.
- Repeat the shortcut until Narrator announces Math.
The two shortcuts move through the available punctuation levels in opposite directions. If you have changed the Narrator key setting, use your configured key instead of Caps Lock or Insert. Microsoft documents this setting in Chapter 4: Reading text.

- Press Windows logo key + Ctrl + N to open Narrator Settings.
- Find Navigation mode.
- Choose Normal or Advanced.

Do not confuse Navigation mode with scan mode
Scan mode is separate from both the Math punctuation level and the Normal/Advanced Navigation mode setting. Press Narrator + Spacebar to toggle scan mode. When it is on, the Up and Down arrow keys navigate apps and webpages. Microsoft notes that scan mode can turn on automatically in Mail, Outlook, Edge, Chrome, Firefox, and Windows apps where it was previously enabled. See Chapter 3: Using scan mode.

What to expect when reading equations
The Math punctuation level is intended to make Narrator speak most mathematical symbols, but Microsoft does not promise that every equation or expression will be read correctly in every app or format. The cited Microsoft guidance lists Windows 11 and Windows 10, but does not specify an exact Windows 11 build.
