Windows 11’s Multi-App Camera mode is designed to let multiple applications access a camera stream at the same time. Microsoft announced the feature in preview update notes dated May 26, 2026, and documented a Group Policy setting for administrators to choose Multi-App Camera or Basic Camera mode. The official material does not establish a universal consumer-facing toggle or guarantee that every camera and app supports simultaneous use.
What Multi-App Camera changes
Ordinarily, opening a camera in one application can prevent another application from using it at the same time. Multi-App Camera is intended to allow multiple applications to access the stream concurrently. Microsoft describes that behavior in its May 26, 2026 preview update notes.

This is a camera-mode feature, not a privacy-permission override. An app still needs camera access, and simultaneous use is not guaranteed for every camera or application. The cited announcement does not provide a supported-build matrix, a hardware or app compatibility list, or a complete consumer walkthrough.
How to check the documented controls
Inspect camera settings
Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Cameras and select the camera you want to inspect. Windows exposes per-camera configuration there, but available controls vary with the camera’s capabilities and Windows version. The official material reviewed does not establish that all users will see a Multi-App Camera switch on this page.

Administrator Group Policy
For enterprise administrators, Microsoft documents this policy location: Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Camera > Configure Camera Options. The policy allows administrators to configure Multi-App Camera mode or Basic Camera mode. See Microsoft’s May 26, 2026 preview update notes for the release context. Because this is a Group Policy control, it is an administrator-facing option, not evidence that the same setting is available in every consumer edition or installation.
Check camera privacy permissions separately
Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Camera. Confirm that Camera access is on and that the relevant app has permission. Microsoft Store apps can have individual permission switches. Desktop apps—including browsers and many conferencing apps—use a general desktop-app access control; this page does not provide an individual switch for each desktop app. Details are in Microsoft’s camera permission guidance.

Troubleshoot when one app cannot use the camera
- Check permissions. In Settings > Privacy & security > Camera, verify the device-level access and the relevant Store-app or desktop-app permission.
- Close other camera-using apps. Quit video-call, browser, recording, or camera apps, then try the affected app again. Another application already using the camera can cause access problems.
- Test the device in Windows Camera. Open Start > Camera. If it works there but not in the app you need, focus on that app’s permissions or settings; if it fails there too, investigate the camera or its driver.
- Check likely system causes. Microsoft lists missing drivers after an update, antivirus software, and restrictive privacy settings among possible reasons a camera may not work. Use Microsoft’s camera troubleshooting guidance for further checks.
These steps address general camera-access failures; they do not guarantee that a particular camera and pair of apps can use Multi-App Camera simultaneously. When testing concurrent access, watch for the camera’s activity light, if it has one. If it does not, Windows shows a notification when the camera turns on or off, according to Microsoft’s camera activity guidance.
