Red light therapy may help some people with knee osteoarthritis pain, but current evidence is uncertain and does not identify a best device. A 2024 review found a possible reduction in pain at rest, yet rated that evidence very low certainty and did not recommend photobiomodulation (PBM) on its own. No consumer knee wrap was tested in the studies summarized here, so the findings cannot establish that a particular retail device works.
What does the evidence say about red light therapy for knee pain?
“Red light therapy” is often used as a broad consumer term for photobiomodulation, a treatment class that uses light to affect tissue. Clinical findings about PBM are not automatically evidence for every device sold as a red-light or near-infrared wrap.

Knee osteoarthritis pain: a possible benefit, with very low certainty
A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis in Physical Therapy included 10 placebo-controlled studies with 542 participants with knee osteoarthritis. All included studies had unclear-to-high risk of bias. Across six studies, pain at rest favored PBM over placebo by −0.7 (95% CI −1.1 to −0.2); the review rated this evidence very low certainty. The result suggests a possible benefit, not a dependable estimate of what an individual patient—or a particular device—will experience.
Disability findings are not the same as proof of pain relief
A separate 2025 umbrella review reported moderate-certainty evidence of improvement in knee osteoarthritis-related disability, with an effect size of 0.65 (95% CI 0.14 to 1.15). Across its broader set of outcomes, certainty was mostly low to moderate, and the authors called for higher-quality trials and more standardized protocols before widespread clinical adoption. This disability result should not be treated as proof that every red-light device relieves knee pain.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The 2024 review found no significant effect on the Timed Up & Go test in three studies. That difference between outcomes matters: evidence of a possible change in pain or disability does not establish improvement in every measure of mobility or daily function.
Is red light therapy a stand-alone treatment for knee osteoarthritis?
No. The 2024 review authors said the very low certainty of evidence did not allow them to recommend PBM as an isolated treatment, though it might complement other widely recommended therapies. That is the authors’ interpretation of the reviewed evidence, not a regulator’s endorsement.

If you are considering a device, treat it as a possible adjunct to a care plan rather than a replacement for treatments recommended by your clinician. The evidence summarized here does not establish that stopping or delaying other care in favor of PBM is appropriate.

The available evidence does not establish a best consumer device for knee pain. The studies assessed PBM as a treatment class, and the research summarized here did not test retail products. A listing that advertises a wavelength, a knee-shaped wrap, or a pain-related claim is not by itself evidence that the product reproduces a clinical study protocol or delivers a proven benefit.

“Red light therapy knee wrap” or “near-infrared light therapy knee wrap” can describe a product category to search for, but neither phrase identifies an evidence-backed winner. A product recommendation would require reliable, product-specific evidence that is not established by the reviews discussed here.
What should you compare before choosing an at-home device?
Compare the labeling and technical information rather than relying on the phrase “red light.” The 2024 review authors noted that dosage recommendations need revision and should be studied across other light emitters; a listed wavelength alone does not show that a consumer wrap matches the protocols used in trials.

- Intended use: Check whether the manufacturer explicitly identifies the knee or the relevant pain use, and read the limits and conditions in the labeling.
- Technical disclosures: Look for published wavelength and dose or output information. If the listing does not explain these specifications, do not assume that its light exposure is comparable to a studied treatment.
- Coverage and fit: Consider whether the device can be positioned consistently over the intended area and whether it covers the area the manufacturer says it treats.
- Instructions: Check the specified session duration and frequency; do not substitute a regimen from another product or research protocol.
- Safety directions: Read any eye-protection requirements and other precautions in the device’s own instructions.
- Regulatory record: Look for a verifiable, product-specific FDA clearance record or labeling. Treat broad claims such as “FDA approved” cautiously unless the exact status is substantiated.
What does FDA classification or clearance mean?
The FDA database lists a Class II, 510(k) category for non-thermal light-based laser instruments for adjunctive pain therapy. That category describes a regulatory classification; it does not establish the status or clinical performance of a particular retail wrap. Check the exact product and its intended use rather than inferring clearance from a broad product category.

Separately, the American Academy of Dermatology explains that FDA clearance does not tell consumers whether a device is effective. Its guidance concerns skin and hair devices, so it is general consumer context rather than knee-specific treatment evidence.

Is red light therapy safe to try on a knee?
The American Academy of Dermatology says red-light therapy appears safe in the short term for the skin and hair uses it discusses, while noting that some users experience temporary mild pain or irritated skin. It advises following device directions and using the eye protection specified by the manufacturer. That guidance is not a comprehensive safety protocol for knee devices, and the evidence summarized here does not establish one.
Follow the specific device’s labeling and ask a clinician about personal medical concerns before use. Do not assume that precautions for one light device or treatment area apply to another.
Who might consider it—and what is still unknown?
Someone with knee osteoarthritis who is interested in PBM can discuss it with a clinician as a possible add-on, while keeping the uncertainty and the lack of product-specific evidence in view. The evidence described here does not establish the best device, a standard dose for home use, or a dependable result for an individual. It also does not show that a consumer LED wrap reproduces the protocols used in clinical studies.
