Keep Windows 11 memory compression enabled in ordinary use. A compressed-memory figure in Task Manager is not, by itself, evidence of a fault or a reason to turn the feature off. If your PC repeatedly slows under the workload you care about and measurements show constrained memory, consider adding physical RAM—but only after confirming that your exact computer supports an upgrade.
Compression and a RAM upgrade solve different problems
Windows can keep some memory pages in RAM in compressed form. Compressed pages still occupy physical memory, but take less space there. Paging is different: Windows can move pages to and from a disk-backed paging file when it needs physical memory. Microsoft describes paging in its virtual memory and paging documentation; a Microsoft-authored Windows memory cheat sheet identifies the compressed-memory readout in Task Manager.

Compression is an operating-system memory-management behavior; installing compatible RAM increases the computer’s physical memory capacity. More capacity may ease pressure for a given workload, but it will not necessarily fix a slowdown caused by something else. The available Microsoft sources do not establish a universal compression ratio, CPU overhead figure, or controlled performance comparison between compression and adding RAM.

- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. Use the Performance and Processes views to inspect memory use and the applications running. Microsoft describes Task Manager as a system monitor for resources including CPU, memory, and disk in its Windows system configuration tools guidance.
- Reproduce the slowdown while watching memory. An idle snapshot may not reflect what happens during the workload that causes trouble.
- Look at available memory and committed bytes, and identify processes with large working sets. Microsoft’s performance troubleshooting guidance discusses these counters and comparing process working sets with available memory.
- Check CPU and disk activity at the same time. Slow performance can have causes beyond memory, including storage, startup applications, software, or aging hardware; Microsoft’s PC performance guidance recommends considering resource use and other possible causes.
A high memory-use percentage alone is not a universal trigger to buy RAM or disable compression. Look for recurring memory pressure that coincides with the slowdown, and check whether a particular application is consuming an unusual amount. If closing or removing an unnecessary high-memory application resolves the issue, a hardware purchase may not be needed.

When adding physical RAM makes sense
An upgrade is worth considering when measurements during your normal workload repeatedly show constrained available memory or high commitment, and the computer maker confirms the machine can accept more memory. First identify the exact laptop model or motherboard, then verify whether memory is soldered or replaceable, its supported generation and form factor, module arrangement, maximum capacity, and any manufacturer restrictions. Without those details, no particular RAM module can be confirmed as compatible.
Windows 11’s published minimum memory requirement is 4 GB, according to Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirements. That is an installation or upgrade requirement, not a promise that every workload will run well at the minimum. Microsoft lists operating-system edition limits of 128 GB for Windows 11 Home and 2 TB for Windows 11 Pro on x64 and ARM64 in its Windows memory limits documentation. Those are OS limits, not recommendations or proof that a particular computer’s hardware supports those capacities; device limits may be lower.

Why disabling compression is not the first fix
Task Manager’s “In use (Compressed)” reading reports memory status; it does not diagnose a malfunction. The cited Microsoft documentation provides no universal threshold at which Windows users should disable compression, and it does not establish that turning compression off improves performance. Treating that number alone as a reason to change memory-management behavior risks addressing a symptom without identifying whether memory is the cause of the slowdown.
For a decision, weigh what you observe during the affected workload, which process or resource is responsible, and whether the exact computer is upgradeable. Compression is built into Windows’ memory management; a RAM upgrade entails hardware cost and is only an option on compatible systems.
