If a Windows 11 PC seems to turn off unexpectedly but later restores the previous session, it may be entering S4, the hibernate state. Windows saves session data to a hibernation file before powering down. That symptom alone does not identify why it happened: check power and lid settings first, then use Windows’ built-in diagnostics to narrow down the cause.
What S4 means—and what it does not tell you
S4 is the ACPI hibernate state. Unlike ordinary sleep, which keeps the system in a low-power state, hibernation saves the operating-system context to disk so the PC can power down and restore the session later. Microsoft describes S4 as the lowest-powered sleeping state, with the longest wake-up latency. It is not the same as a full shutdown, and seeing an S4-related symptom does not by itself prove a Windows bug or hardware fault. Microsoft’s explanation of Windows system sleeping states covers the distinctions.

Check the settings that can send the PC to sleep or hibernate
Review sleep timeouts
Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. Compare the screen and sleep timeout values with when the unexpected transition occurs. Check both the on-battery and plugged-in values where Windows shows separate columns. Defaults vary by whether the PC uses Modern Standby or S3, so do not assume another computer’s settings are appropriate for yours. Microsoft’s Windows 11 power settings guide explains the controls.

If the PC is a laptop, or the behavior follows a button press, inspect what closing the lid and pressing the power button are configured to do. Open Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options, then select Choose what closing the lid does or Choose what the power buttons do. Compare the listed actions with what you expect; these actions can be configured to hibernate. Microsoft’s shutdown, sleep, and hibernate guide describes the available choices.

Use powercfg to identify supported states and gather evidence
Open Command Prompt and run the following commands as needed. They provide clues, not a guaranteed explanation for every transition. In particular, a wake report describes wake history; it may not identify what caused the PC to enter S4. Microsoft documents these options in its powercfg command reference.
| Command | What it helps establish |
|---|---|
powercfg /a |
Lists available sleep states and reasons other states may be unavailable. This identifies the platform’s supported sleep model; it does not establish the cause of a particular transition. |
powercfg /lastwake |
Reports information about what woke the computer from its last sleep transition. It concerns waking, not necessarily the event that sent the PC into S4. |
powercfg /waketimers |
Lists active wake timers. |
powercfg /sleepstudy |
Generates a SleepStudy report for Modern Standby systems. Microsoft says the default report covers recent sessions and documents a duration option. |
powercfg /systemsleepdiagnostics |
Generates a report of user-absent intervals and whether the computer entered sleep. Run it from an elevated prompt. |
Use SleepStudy only when the PC supports Modern Standby
SleepStudy is designed for Modern Standby PCs, not as a universal report for every Windows sleep model or every S4 event. Its session-level details can include active and idle time, power consumed, and first-level causes of activity. Treat those details as investigative evidence: the report is not a direct fix and is not guaranteed to name the root cause of an unexpected hibernation. See Microsoft’s SleepStudy documentation.

Match the next step to what the evidence shows
- A timeout or lid/button action is inconsistent with your intent: Change the relevant setting, then observe whether the same pattern recurs.
- The issue appears tied to a device or resume behavior: Where appropriate, disconnect and reconnect the affected peripheral, restart the PC, and check for current drivers.
- The problem seems specific to the PC model: Consult the manufacturer’s documentation or support for model-specific driver, firmware, or resume guidance. Microsoft also recommends checking current drivers and manufacturer support when troubleshooting power behavior.
Microsoft’s August 27, 2026 preview update for Windows 11 version 26H1, KB5120996 (OS Build 28000.2804), notes a reliability improvement that applies Settings power changes across power plans. That is a release-specific servicing note, not evidence that the update caused or resolves every unexpected S4 report. Check the PC’s Windows version and update history before treating the note as relevant to an individual case. Read Microsoft’s KB5120996 release notes.

There is no single cause or universal fix established for unexpected S4 entry across Windows 11 PCs. Start with configured timeouts and lid/button actions, then use the reports that fit the PC’s supported sleep model. If those checks do not point to a cause, the next step depends on the model and the evidence—not on replacing hardware without a device-specific reason.
