If an app or website cannot access it, check the physical shutter or switch if your model has one, ChromeOS camera access and app permissions, then the website’s own permission in Chrome.
Open the camera on your Samsung Chromebook
- Open the Chromebook launcher.
- Select Camera.
- Use the controls shown in the app to take a photo or record video.
Available controls depend on the Chromebook’s hardware. If an external camera is connected—or the device has two built-in cameras—you may be able to switch between cameras in the Camera app. See Google’s camera features guide.

Check the physical camera shutter or switch
Some Chromebooks have a physical camera privacy switch or shutter. If yours does, make sure it is enabled or open. Not every Samsung Chromebook has one, so check the specific device rather than assuming the control is present. Google notes that a physical camera switch, when fitted, must be turned on for the camera to work.

ChromeOS has a device-level camera control as well as permissions for individual apps. If device-level camera access is off, apps and services are blocked; an app can also be denied permission while device access is on.

- Open the status area and select Settings.
- Go to Privacy and security, then Privacy controls.
- Turn on Camera access.
- Check that the app you want to use is allowed to access the camera.
Menu labels can change with ChromeOS updates. Google’s camera, microphone and location settings guide describes the controls.
Allow camera access for a website in Chrome
If the Camera app works but a website does not, check that site’s camera permission separately. A site can be allowed, denied, or set to ask for permission; changing ChromeOS device access alone may not clear a site-specific block.

- Open the website in Chrome.
- Open the site’s permissions in Chrome settings and find Camera.
- Allow access or choose the permission you intend to use.
- Refresh the page if it still shows the previous permission state.

- Restart the Chromebook.
- Try the camera in another camera-using app, such as Google Meet.
- If it works in the other app, uninstall and reinstall the app where the camera fails.
This is a basic way to isolate an app-specific problem, not a definitive hardware diagnosis. Google includes these steps in its hardware and system troubleshooting guidance.

What varies between Samsung Chromebook models
Camera arrangement, features, and hardware specifications differ by model. For example, Samsung’s Galaxy Chromebook Go Wi-Fi specification sheet lists a 1 MP (720p HD) webcam for that model. That specification should not be applied to other Samsung Chromebooks.
When an external webcam may help
If the built-in camera remains unsuitable, a compatible USB webcam is an option; ChromeOS can switch to an external camera when one is connected. Compatibility and connector fit depend on the exact Chromebook and webcam, so check the device’s ports and the accessory’s ChromeOS support before choosing one. No specific webcam compatibility is established across Samsung models.
