Windows 11 Keeps Crashing – 5 Potential Fixes

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows 11 crashes can show up as random restarts, blue screen errors, frozen apps, or a system that suddenly locks up with no clear warning. The cause is often something fixable, such as an outdated driver, a buggy update, corrupted system files, overheating hardware, malware, or a recently installed app causing conflicts.

Before assuming the worst, it is worth working through a few safe troubleshooting steps that can narrow down the problem without putting your files at unnecessary risk. The fixes below start with simple checks like Windows and driver updates, then move into system repair tools, hardware checks, startup conflicts, and recovery options if the crashes continue.

Check for Windows Updates and Driver Problems

When Windows 11 keeps crashing, updates and drivers should be one of the first places you look. System updates often include stability fixes, security patches, and compatibility improvements for newer hardware. Drivers are just as critical because they allow Windows to communicate with your graphics card, network adapter, storage controller, chipset, printer, audio device, and other components. A buggy, outdated, or mismatched driver can trigger blue screen errors, random restarts, freezing, or crashes when launching specific apps or games.

Start by checking Windows Update. Open Settings, go to Windows Update, and select Check for updates. Install anything listed, including cumulative updates, security updates, and feature-related fixes. After that, open Advanced options under Windows Update and check Optional updates. This area sometimes contains driver updates from Microsoft or hardware vendors. Install optional driver updates selectively, especially if the device listed matches hardware that has been acting up, such as a display adapter, Wi-Fi card, or Bluetooth device.

Update drivers safely

For graphics drivers, it is usually best to go directly to the manufacturer. If you use NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel graphics, download the current driver from the official support site or use the vendor’s own update utility. Graphics driver problems are a common cause of crashes during gaming, video editing, browser hardware acceleration, or multi-monitor use. For laptops and prebuilt desktops, also check the support page from Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer, MSI, or your system manufacturer, since they may provide tested chipset, BIOS, audio, and power management drivers for your exact model.

  • Use official sources: Get drivers from Windows Update, your PC maker, or the hardware manufacturer.
  • Avoid random driver updater tools: Many install incorrect or unnecessary drivers and can make crashes worse.
  • Restart after installing drivers: Some changes do not fully apply until Windows restarts.
  • Update one major driver at a time: This makes it easier to identify the cause if a new problem appears.

If crashes started shortly after a driver update, rolling it back may be safer than updating again. Right-click the Start button, choose Device Manager, expand the relevant device category, double-click the device, open the Driver tab, and select Roll Back Driver if the option is available. This is especially useful for display, audio, network, and storage drivers. If the rollback button is unavailable, you can choose Uninstall device, restart the PC, and let Windows reinstall a basic compatible driver. For graphics drivers, a clean reinstall from the vendor’s installer may also help.

You should also pay attention to firmware and BIOS or UEFI updates, but handle them carefully. These updates can fix stability problems, sleep issues, CPU compatibility bugs, and memory-related crashes, particularly on newer Windows 11 systems. However, a failed BIOS update can cause serious startup problems, so only install one from your computer or motherboard manufacturer and follow the instructions exactly. Make sure the laptop is plugged in, avoid interrupting the process, and do not update BIOS during a storm or unstable power situation unless you have battery backup.

After updating Windows and the most relevant drivers, use the computer normally and watch for patterns. If crashes stop, the issue was likely caused by a software or driver compatibility problem. If Windows 11 still crashes, write down any blue screen stop codes, device names, or timing patterns, such as crashes after sleep, during games, or when connecting USB devices. Those details will help narrow down the next steps, including system file repair, disk checks, app removal, or hardware testing.

Run System File and Disk Repair Tools

If Windows 11 keeps crashing after updates and drivers have been checked, the next step is to look for damaged system files or file system errors. Corrupted Windows components can cause blue screens, random restarts, frozen apps, failed boot attempts, or crashes during ordinary tasks such as opening File Explorer. Windows includes built-in repair tools that can scan protected system files, repair the Windows image, and check the disk for errors without requiring third-party software.

Start with the System File Checker tool. Right-click the Start button, choose Terminal (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin), and approve the User Account Control prompt. In the window that opens, run this command: sfc /scannow. The scan can take several minutes, and it is best to leave the PC alone while it runs. When finished, Windows may report that it found no integrity violations, repaired corrupted files, or found files it could not repair. If repairs were made, restart the computer and use it normally for a while to see whether the crashes stop.

If System File Checker cannot fix everything, run the Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool before running SFC again. In the same administrator Terminal window, enter DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth. This checks the local Windows image and attempts to replace damaged components through Windows Update. Make sure the computer is connected to the internet, keep it plugged into power if it is a laptop, and wait until the process reaches 100%. After DISM completes, run sfc /scannow once more, then restart Windows.

Check the drive for file system errors

Crashes can also come from file system problems, bad sectors, or a drive that is starting to fail. To check the Windows drive, open Terminal (Admin) again and run chkdsk C: /f. If Windows says the drive is in use and asks whether to schedule the check at the next restart, type Y, press Enter, and restart the PC. The scan may take a long time, especially on large hard drives, so do not force the computer off unless it is completely stuck for an extended period.

  • Use /f first: The /f switch fixes file system errors and is the safest starting point for most users.
  • Be cautious with /r: The chkdsk C: /r option scans for bad sectors and attempts recovery, but it can take much longer and places more stress on a failing drive.
  • Back up first if possible: If the PC is crashing often or the drive is making clicking noises, copy personal files to an external drive or cloud storage before running deeper disk checks.

After these repairs, check whether Windows 11 is more stable. If crashes continue and you see repeated disk warnings in Event Viewer, slow boot times, disappearing files, or SMART warnings from the drive manufacturer’s tool, the storage device may be failing. In that case, prioritize backing up your data and consider replacing the SSD or hard drive before reinstalling Windows.

Uninstall Problematic Apps or Recent Updates

If Windows 11 started crashing after you installed a new program, driver utility, antivirus tool, game launcher, VPN client, or system “optimizer,” that change should be one of the first things you investigate. Apps that run background services, add shell extensions, install low-level drivers, or hook into networking and graphics components can trigger freezes, blue screens, random restarts, or crashes during shutdown. A recent Windows update can also cause trouble on some hardware configurations, especially if it affects display drivers, storage controllers, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or security features.

Start by removing recently installed apps one at a time. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, then sort the list by Date installed. Look for anything added shortly before the crashing began. Select the three-dot menu beside the app, choose Uninstall, and follow the prompts. Restart the PC afterward, even if Windows does not ask you to. Avoid uninstalling several apps at once unless you are confident they are unrelated; testing after each removal makes it much easier to identify the cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pay special attention to software that interacts closely with Windows. Third-party antivirus suites, RGB lighting controllers, overclocking utilities, motherboard tools, fan-control apps, backup programs, screen recorders, and older VPN clients are common suspects. If you need the program, check the developer’s site for a Windows 11-compatible version before reinstalling it. For security software, make sure Windows Security is enabled after removal so the PC is not left unprotected.

Remove a recent Windows update

If the crashes began immediately after a Windows update, you can uninstall certain updates safely while you test. Go to Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates. Select the most recent quality update and choose Uninstall. Restart the computer, then use it normally for a while to see whether stability improves. Feature updates may require a different rollback option under Settings > System > Recovery, but that option is only available for a limited time after upgrading.

  • Quality updates: Monthly security and reliability updates. These are usually the easiest to uninstall for testing.
  • Driver updates: Updates delivered through Windows Update that may affect graphics, audio, networking, or chipset devices.
  • Feature updates: Larger Windows version upgrades, such as moving to a newer 23H2 or 24H2 release.

You can also use Reliability Monitor to connect crashes to a specific app or update. Press Windows + S, search for Reliability Monitor, and open View reliability history. Red error icons often show failed applications, Windows failures, and installations on the same timeline. If the same app appears repeatedly before crashes, uninstalling or updating it is a sensible next step.

Check for Overheating, RAM, and Hardware Issues

If Windows 11 keeps crashing during games, video editing, large file transfers, or shortly after startup, the cause may be hardware rather than software. Overheating, failing memory, a weak power supply, loose internal connections, or a problematic storage drive can all trigger blue screens, sudden restarts, freezes, and shutdowns. Start with checks that do not require opening the computer, then move to physical inspection only if you are comfortable doing so.

Check temperatures and airflow

Overheating is common on laptops, compact desktops, and older PCs with dust buildup. If crashes happen when the system is under load, listen for unusually loud fans and check whether the case or laptop underside feels very hot. Make sure vents are not blocked by bedding, carpet, or dust. Place laptops on a hard surface, unplug unnecessary peripherals, and shut the system down for a few minutes if it is extremely hot.

  • Use a trusted hardware monitoring tool to check CPU and GPU temperatures while the PC is idle and under load.
  • Clean dust from vents and fans using short bursts of compressed air while the PC is powered off.
  • For desktops, confirm that case fans spin and that cables are not obstructing airflow.
  • If temperatures rise quickly after startup, the CPU cooler, thermal paste, or fan may need service.

Test your RAM for errors

Faulty or unstable RAM can cause random crashes that seem unrelated to any one app. Windows includes a built-in memory test that is safe for most users. Press Windows + R, type mdsched.exe, and choose Restart now and check for problems. The PC will reboot and run Windows Memory Diagnostic before returning to the desktop. If it reports errors, do not ignore them; a RAM stick may need to be reseated, tested one at a time, or replaced.

If you recently upgraded your RAM, check that it is compatible with your motherboard or laptop model. Mixed memory kits, incorrect speeds, or aggressive XMP/EXPO settings can make a system unstable. If you enabled memory overclocking in BIOS or UEFI, temporarily return settings to default and test Windows again. On a desktop, power the PC off, unplug it, and reseat memory modules only if you are comfortable handling components and can avoid static discharge.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Look for storage, power, and peripheral problems

A failing SSD or hard drive can produce crashes, boot errors, missing files, and long freezes. Open Task Manager and watch whether disk usage stays at 100% during normal activity. You can also check the drive’s health using the manufacturer’s SSD utility or a reputable SMART monitoring tool. If a drive reports warnings, back up your files immediately before running further tests.

  • Disconnect nonessential USB devices, docks, external drives, capture cards, and hubs, then test the PC again.
  • Try a different power outlet or charger if a laptop crashes when plugged in or under heavy load.
  • For desktops, random restarts during gaming or rendering may point to an underpowered or failing power supply.
  • Remove any recent hardware upgrades temporarily, such as new RAM, GPU, storage, or expansion cards.

If crashes continue after basic checks, save any crash codes or Event Viewer errors and consider professional diagnosis. Hardware faults can worsen quickly, and repeated crashes may corrupt files or damage an already failing drive. If the device is under warranty, contact the manufacturer before opening it or replacing parts yourself.

Scan for Malware and Disable Startup Conflicts

Malware, aggressive browser extensions, bundled “optimizer” tools, and background utilities can all make Windows 11 unstable. If crashes started without an obvious driver or hardware change, check for unwanted software next. Security threats may corrupt files, overload the CPU or disk, interfere with system services, or inject themselves into normal processes. Startup conflicts can cause similar symptoms, especially when mulle apps load drivers, overlays, VPN components, RGB controllers, cloud sync tools, or monitoring utilities as soon as you sign in.

Start with a full malware scan using Windows Security. Open Settings > Privacy & security > Windows Security > Virus & threat protection, then choose Scan options and run a Full scan. If Windows continues crashing or you suspect a deeper infection, run Microsoft Defender Offline scan from the same menu. This restarts the PC and scans before Windows fully loads, which can help detect threats that hide during normal operation. If you use a trusted third-party antivirus, update it first, then run its full scan as well. Avoid installing several antivirus suites at once, because overlapping real-time protection can create slowdowns and crashes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After scanning, reduce what launches with Windows. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, select Startup apps, and disable nonessential items. Good candidates include game launchers, chat apps, update helpers, hardware dashboards, printer utilities, and cloud clients you do not need immediately after login. Do not disable entries from Microsoft, your graphics driver, audio driver, touchpad driver, security software, or storage controller unless you know what they do. Restart the PC and use it normally for a while to see whether the crashes stop.

Use a clean boot to isolate software conflicts

If disabling startup apps is not enough, perform a clean boot to test whether a background service is responsible. Press Windows + R, type msconfig, and press Enter. On the Services tab, check Hide all Microsoft services, then select Disable all. Next, open Task Manager from the Startup tab and disable third-party startup items. Restart the computer and test for crashes. If Windows becomes stable, re-enable services and startup items in small groups, restarting after each change, until the crashing returns. The last group you enabled likely contains the problem app or service.

  • Remove suspicious apps: Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps and uninstall programs you do not recognize or no longer use.
  • Check browser extensions: Disable unfamiliar extensions in Edge, Chrome, or Firefox, especially coupon tools, download helpers, and search add-ons.
  • Update problem utilities: If the culprit is a VPN, RGB controller, game overlay, backup client, or hardware monitor, install the latest version or leave it disabled.
  • Review reliability history: Search for Reliability Monitor in Start and look for repeated app failures around the time crashes began.

Once you identify a conflict, keep the app disabled, uninstall it, or replace it with a more stable alternative. If scans find malware that cannot be removed, crashes continue in a clean boot, or Windows becomes too unstable to troubleshoot safely, back up your files before moving on to a Windows reset or professional repair.

Reset Windows 11 as a Last Resort

If Windows 11 still crashes after updating drivers, repairing system files, checking hardware, scanning for malware, and removing suspicious apps, a reset may be the next practical step. Resetting Windows reinstalls the operating system and can clear deep software damage, broken settings, driver conflicts, and leftover components from old programs. It is not the first fix to try, because it can remove apps and change system settings, but it is often safer and faster than continuing to chase a persistent crash loop for days.

How to reset Windows 11

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to System > Recovery.
  3. Under Recovery options, select Reset PC.
  4. Choose either Keep my files or Remove everything.
  5. Select Cloud download or Local reinstall.
  6. Review the final screen carefully, then confirm the reset.

The Keep my files option removes installed apps and resets Windows settings while preserving files in your user folders. This is usually the best first reset option if the PC is still usable and you have already backed up your data. Remove everything is more aggressive and is better suited for severe corruption, recurring malware concerns, or preparing the computer for sale or repair. If you choose it, assume that personal files, apps, and settings on the Windows drive will be deleted.

Reset choice Best for What to expect
Keep my files Frequent crashes caused by Windows settings, apps, or drivers Personal files stay, but apps and many settings are removed
Remove everything Severe instability, suspected deep infection, or starting over Files, apps, and settings are removed from the Windows installation
Cloud download Systems with possible damaged local recovery files Downloads a fresh Windows image and needs a stable internet connection
Local reinstall Limited internet access Uses files already on the PC, which may fail if the local image is damaged

After the reset, install Windows updates first, then add device drivers from Windows Update or the PC manufacturer’s support page. Reinstall apps gradually rather than all at once, and test the computer between installations. If the crashes return immediately after a reset, especially with blue screens, sudden power-offs, graphical artifacts, clicking drives, or memory errors, the cause may be failing hardware rather than Windows itself. At that point, stop repeated resets and consider professional diagnostics, warranty service, or replacement of the affected component.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I tell if Windows 11 is crashing because of drivers or hardware?

Driver-related crashes often happen after a Windows update, GPU driver update, or new device installation, and may show a blue screen error mentioning a file like a display, audio, or network driver. Hardware issues are more likely if crashes happen under load, during gaming, while the laptop is hot, or even before Windows fully starts. Check Device Manager, Reliability Monitor, and Event Viewer for repeated errors, and run Windows Memory Diagnostic or your PC maker’s hardware diagnostics if you suspect RAM, storage, or overheating.

Is it safe to run SFC, DISM, and CHKDSK on Windows 11?

Yes, these built-in repair tools are generally safe and are commonly used to fix corrupted Windows files and disk errors. Start with System File Checker and DISM, then use CHKDSK if you suspect drive problems or see disk-related errors. If CHKDSK reports bad sectors or your SSD or hard drive keeps producing errors, back up your files immediately and consider replacing the drive.

Can a recent Windows update make my PC start crashing?

Yes, a buggy update or incompatible driver delivered through Windows Update can cause crashes on some systems. If the crashes started right after an update, open Update history and consider uninstalling the most recent quality update or rolling back a driver in Device Manager. Avoid removing security updates unless you have a clear reason, and reinstall newer fixed updates when Microsoft or your device manufacturer releases them.

Should I reset Windows 11 if my computer keeps crashing?

Resetting Windows 11 can help if crashes are caused by damaged system files, broken settings, or software conflicts that other fixes did not resolve. Before resetting, back up your personal files, save license keys where needed, and make a list of apps you will need to reinstall.
