What a Discord Group DM Is and When to Use One
A Discord Group DM is a private direct-message conversation between three or more Discord users. It works like a regular one-on-one DM, but with mulle people in the same thread. You can send text messages, share files, post links, use emoji reactions, start voice calls, and begin video calls without creating a Discord server. It appears in your Direct Messages list rather than inside a server channel.

Group DMs are best for small, temporary, or casual conversations. For example, you might use one to coordinate a gaming session with a few friends, plan a study call, share travel details with a small group, or quickly discuss something with teammates without setting up roles, channels, and permissions. Because everyone in the chat is part of the same private thread, a Group DM is faster to create than a server and easier to manage when the conversation only involves a handful of people.
When a Group DM Makes Sense
- Small friend groups: Use it for a few people who already know each other and need a shared chat space.
- Quick coordination: It is useful for arranging game nights, voice calls, project check-ins, or event plans.
- No server setup needed: You do not need channels, moderation tools, bots, or custom permissions.
- Private conversations: Messages stay in the DM area and are not visible to members of any server you share.
A Group DM is not the same as a Discord server. A server is better when you need a long-term community space, separate text and voice channels, moderation features, roles, announcements, or room for many members. Group DMs are intentionally simpler: everyone is in one conversation, and there are fewer settings to manage. That simplicity is helpful for quick chats, but it can become limiting if the group grows or needs structure.
There are also privacy and contact considerations. In most cases, you can only add people who are your Discord friends, and other participants may need to be able to receive DMs based on their privacy settings. If someone cannot be added, it may be because they are not on your friends list, their settings restrict messages, or they have blocked someone in the group. For sensitive topics, remember that any participant can read the full chat while they are a member, and Discord conversations can include shared media, call history, and visible usernames within the group.

|---|---|
| Small private chats | Larger communities |
| Fast setup with friends | Organized channels and categories |
| Casual voice or video calls | Roles, permissions, bots, and moderation |
| Short-term planning | Long-term group management |
In short, choose a Discord Group DM when you want a lightweight private chat for a small set of people. If the conversation needs mulle topics, public invitations, member roles, or ongoing moderation, a Discord server will usually be the better option.
Requirements and Limits for Discord Group DMs
Before you create a Discord Group DM, there are a few requirements to understand. A Group DM is built from your direct message list, so it works best when the people you want to include are already on your Discord friends list. In most cases, you can only add users who are your friends, and Discord may block an invite if the person’s privacy settings do not allow direct messages or friend-based invitations.
Discord Group DMs also have a size limit. A single Group DM can include up to 10 users total, including you. If you need a larger conversation, recurring voice channels, roles, moderation tools, searchable topic channels, or community-style organization, a private Discord server is usually the better option. Group DMs are designed for small, casual conversations rather than structured groups.
Basic requirements
- You need a Discord account: Group DMs are available to regular Discord users on desktop, web, iOS, and Android.
- Participants usually need to be friends: Add people as friends first if they do not appear when you try to create the Group DM.
- Privacy settings must allow contact: A user may not be addable if they restrict who can message or invite them.
- The group must stay within the user limit: Once the Group DM reaches 10 total members, you cannot add more people.
There are also permission differences compared with servers. A Group DM does not have server roles, channel permissions, bots, admin panels, or audit logs. Everyone in the Group DM can usually see the full conversation from the point they join, participate in text chat, and start voice or video calls. The person who created the Group DM does not get the same type of owner controls that a server owner has.
Limits to keep in mind
| Limit | What it means |
|---|---|
| 10-person maximum | A Group DM can include you and up to 9 other people. |
| No channels | All messages happen in one shared conversation thread. |
| No roles or moderation tools | You cannot assign moderators, create permission levels, or use server-style controls. |
| Friend and privacy restrictions | Some users may not appear as invite options depending on friend status and settings. |
If you are planning a Group DM for a small friend circle, gaming squad, study group, or quick project chat, these limits are usually manageable. For anything long-term or larger than 10 people, create a server instead and use private channels if you want to keep the conversation limited to selected members.

How to Create a Group DM on Desktop
Creating a Group DM in the Discord desktop app or web version takes only a few clicks, as long as the people you want to include are already on your Friends list. The process is the same on Windows, macOS, Linux, and Discord in a browser: open your Direct Messages area, choose friends, then start the conversation. A Group DM is separate from servers, so it will appear in your DM list rather than inside any server channel.
- Open Discord and sign in to your account using the desktop app or discord.com/app.
- Click the Discord logo in the top-left corner to go to your Home or Direct Messages view.
- Select the Friends tab from the left sidebar if it is not already open.
- Click the “New Group DM” button, usually shown as a speech bubble with a plus icon near the top-right of the Friends page.
- Choose the friends you want to include by ticking the checkboxes next to their names. You can use the search field to find friends faster.
- Click “Create Group DM” to open the new conversation.
- Send a message to start the chat. Once you send the first message, the Group DM becomes active and appears in the DM list for everyone included.
If you cannot find someone in the selection list, they are usually not your Discord friend, or their privacy settings prevent DMs in certain situations. Send them a friend request first, wait for them to accept it, then try creating the Group DM again. Discord Group DMs are designed for friends, so you cannot freely add server members unless they meet the friend and privacy requirements.
After the Group DM is created, you can make it easier to recognize by changing its name. Open the Group DM, click the current group name at the top, and type a custom name such as “Weekend Plans,” “Study Group,” or “Project Chat.” You can also click the group icon area to upload or change the Group DM image. These changes help separate the chat from one-on-one DMs, especially if you are in several active conversations.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Before sending anything sensitive, check that the member list is correct. On desktop, the participant icons usually appear near the top of the chat, and opening the member list or group details lets you confirm who has access. Group DMs do not use server roles, channel permissions, or moderation tools, so everyone in the conversation can see the messages once they are part of the chat. For temporary planning, small friend groups, quick voice calls, and private coordination outside a server, the desktop Group DM flow is usually the fastest option.
How to Create a Group DM on Mobile
Creating a Group DM in the Discord mobile app works much like it does on desktop, but the controls are arranged for a smaller screen. You can start one from the Direct Messages area, select mulle friends, and open a private chat that is separate from any server. The steps are the same on iPhone, iPad, and Android, although button placement may vary slightly depending on your app version.
- Open the Discord app and sign in to your account.
- Go to Direct Messages. Tap the Discord logo or message icon to open your home/DM area if you are currently viewing a server.
- Tap the new message button. This usually appears as a speech bubble, pencil, or plus icon near the top of the DM list.
- Select friends to add. Tap the names of the friends you want in the Group DM. You can use the search field to find someone faster if your friends list is long.
- Start the Group DM. After selecting at least two friends, tap Create, Start, or the checkmark button, depending on your device and app version.
- Send your first message. Type a message, share an image, or start a voice/video call from the icons inside the chat.
If you only select one friend, Discord will open a normal one-to-one DM instead of a Group DM. To create a group conversation, choose two or more friends before confirming. Discord Group DMs also have a participant limit, so if you cannot select more people, the chat may already be at the maximum size or one of the accounts may not be eligible to join.
Starting from an existing one-to-one DM
You can also create a Group DM from a current private chat. Open the DM with a friend, tap their name or the member/profile icon at the top of the screen, then look for an option such as Add Friends to DM or Create Group DM. Select the additional friends you want to include and confirm. This creates a group conversation with the selected people, rather than turning a server channel into a DM.
Mobile setup tips
- Update the app first: If the create button or add-friends option is missing, install the latest Discord update from the App Store or Google Play.
- Check friend status: You generally need to be friends with someone on Discord before you can add them to a Group DM.
- Use search: Typing a display name or username is faster than scrolling through a large friends list.
- Name the group after creating it: Open the Group DM, tap the group name or icons at the top, and edit the name so everyone can recognize the chat later.
- Review notifications: If you expect the chat to be active, open the Group DM settings and mute it temporarily or adjust notification behavior to avoid constant alerts.
If a friend does not appear when you search, confirm that they are on your friends list and that neither of you has blocked the other. If the app freezes or the Group DM does not open after tapping create, close and reopen Discord, switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, or try again after updating the app. For account or privacy-related issues, ask the other person to check whether their direct message and friend request settings are preventing contact.

How to Add or Remove People in a Group DM
After a Discord Group DM is created, you can invite additional friends if the conversation still has room. Group DMs support up to 10 users total, including you, so you can add people until that limit is reached. The person you add must usually be on your Discord friends list, and their privacy settings must allow direct messages or group DM invites. If Discord does not let you add someone, check whether they are your friend, whether the group is full, and whether their settings block the invite.
Adding people on desktop
- Open Discord and select the Group DM from your Direct Messages list.
- Click the Add Friends to DM icon near the top-right of the chat window. It looks like a person with a plus sign.
- Search for the friend you want to invite, or select their name from the list.
- Click Create Group DM or Add, depending on the Discord interface shown.
When a new person is added, they can see messages sent after they join, but they typically will not receive the full earlier conversation history in the same way existing members do. If the previous context matters, send a short recap or pin a current message that explains what the chat is for. This helps avoid confusion, especially in planning chats, gaming sessions, study groups, or small project discussions.
Adding people on mobile
- Open the Discord app and go to your Messages or Direct Messages area.
- Tap the Group DM you want to manage.
- Tap the member icons or the group name at the top of the screen to open group details.
- Choose Add Members or the person-plus icon.
- Select the friends you want to add, then confirm the invite.
The exact labels can vary slightly between iOS, Android, and Discord app versions, but the flow is the same: open the Group DM, open its details, then use the add-member control. If the button is missing, the DM may already be at the 10-person limit, the app may need updating, or the person you want to invite may not be eligible because of friend or privacy restrictions.
Removing people from a Group DM
Discord Group DMs are more limited than servers when it comes to member management. In most cases, you cannot kick another person out of a Group DM the way a server admin can remove a member from a server. Each participant can leave the Group DM on their own, but there is no full role-based moderation system, ownership transfer, or permission setup. If someone no longer belongs in the conversation, the cleanest option is often to create a new Group DM with only the people you want included.
- To leave on desktop: open the Group DM, click the group name or member list area, then choose Leave Group or right-click the DM in your Direct Messages list and select the leave option.
- To leave on mobile: open the Group DM, tap the group name or member icons, then choose Leave Group from the details menu.
- To reduce disruption: tell the group before leaving if the chat is active, especially if it is being used to coordinate plans.
If a Group DM becomes too large, too noisy, or needs moderation, consider moving the conversation to a private Discord server instead. A server gives you channels, roles, permissions, moderation tools, invite controls, and better long-term organization. For a quick chat among close friends, a Group DM is convenient; for anything that needs structure or member control, a private server is usually the better fit.
Managing Notifications, Privacy, and Group DM Settings
After you create a Discord Group DM, it is worth adjusting the settings so the chat stays useful instead of becoming distracting. Group DMs do not have the same moderation tools, roles, or channel structure as a server, so most management happens through notification controls, member access, and your own privacy preferences. These settings are especially helpful if the group is active, includes people from different time zones, or is being used for a short-term plan such as gaming, travel, study, or event coordination.
Control notifications for the Group DM
On desktop, open the Group DM and look near the top-right area for notification options, such as the bell icon or conversation settings. You can mute the conversation for a set period, such as 15 minutes, 1 hour, 8 hours, 24 hours, or until you turn notifications back on. On mobile, open the Group DM, tap the member or chat name at the top, then look for notification or mute settings. Muting a Group DM stops push alerts and sound notifications, but the chat will still appear in your Discord inbox when new messages arrive.
Recommended Free Tools
- Mute busy chats: Use mute when a group is sending frequent messages that do not need immediate replies.
- Check mentions manually: Even if muted, open the Group DM later to catch up on anything you missed.
- Use status settings: Set yourself to Do Not Disturb if you want to pause most Discord alerts across the app.
- Adjust device settings: If Discord notifications are not behaving as expected, check your computer or phone notification permissions too.
Manage privacy and who can contact you
Group DMs are more personal than servers because every participant is placed into a private conversation. Be careful when adding people who do not already know each other, since everyone in the Group DM can see the member list and send messages in that chat. Discord generally requires users to be friends, or to have compatible privacy settings, before they can be added successfully. If someone cannot be added, they may need to accept a friend request first or update their direct message privacy settings.

You can review your broader privacy controls in Discord’s user settings. On desktop, select the gear icon near your username, then open privacy and safety options. On mobile, tap your profile icon and look for privacy-related settings. These controls can affect who can send you direct messages, who can add you as a friend, and how Discord filters message requests or potentially unwanted content. If you are organizing a Group DM for people who are not close contacts, ask before adding them and avoid sharing sensitive details such as phone numbers, addresses, payment information, or private schedules in the chat.
Use built-in Group DM settings
A Group DM has a few simple management options. You can rename the Group DM so it is easier to recognize in your message list, especially if you are in several chats with overlapping friends. You can also change the group icon, start a voice or video call, pin useful messages where available, and view shared media or files from the conversation. These small adjustments make the chat easier to navigate without needing to create a full Discord server.
| Setting | What it helps with |
|---|---|
| Mute conversation | Reduces alerts from an active Group DM without leaving it |
| Rename Group DM | Makes the chat easier to identify in your Direct Messages list |
| Change privacy settings | Controls who can message or add you, depending on your Discord settings |
| Leave Group DM | Removes the conversation from your active DMs when you no longer need it |
If a Group DM becomes too large, too noisy, or needs stronger organization, consider moving the conversation to a private Discord server instead. A server gives you channels, roles, permissions, moderation tools, and more flexible notification options. For quick conversations with a small set of friends, though, a well-managed Group DM is usually the fastest option.

If a Discord Group DM will not start or someone cannot join, the issue is usually tied to friend status, privacy settings, app sync, or the Group DM member limit. Most setup problems can be fixed by checking the basics first: everyone must be Discord friends with the person adding them, the Group DM must not already be full, and the app should be updated and connected properly.
You cannot find someone in the add friends list
When you create or expand a Group DM, Discord only shows eligible friends. If a person does not appear in the list, confirm that they are on your Friends list and that the friend request has been accepted. Being in the same server is not enough for a Group DM invite unless they are already your friend. Also check that you are searching by the correct display name or username, since recent Discord name changes can make older tags unreliable.
- Confirm friendship: Open your Friends tab and make sure the person appears under your accepted friends, not pending requests.
- Check spelling: Search using their current display name or username.
- Try from another device: If the person appears on desktop but not mobile, refresh or restart the mobile app.
The Add Friends to DM button is missing or disabled
If you do not see the option to add people, the Group DM may already be at Discord’s participant limit. Group DMs support up to 10 users total, including you. If the chat is full, you cannot invite another person unless someone leaves or is removed. In some cases, the button may also appear unavailable while Discord is still loading the conversation, especially after switching networks or waking a device from sleep.
Close and reopen the DM, then check the member list count. On desktop, select the Group DM and look for the add-person icon near the top of the chat. On mobile, open the Group DM, tap the member or chat header area, and look for the option to add friends. If the control still does not appear, update Discord and restart the app.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSomeone did not receive the Group DM invitation
Discord Group DM invites are usually instant, but a person may miss the chat if their app is offline, notifications are muted, or they are looking in servers instead of Direct Messages. Ask them to open the Direct Messages area and check for the new conversation. If they still cannot see it, remove and re-add them if possible, or have another member try adding them.

Messages will not send in the Group DM
If the Group DM opens but messages fail to send, check your internet connection first. Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, then try sending a short text message instead of an image or file. Large uploads, unstable connections, or temporary Discord service issues can prevent messages from going through. If only one Group DM is affected, leave the chat open for a moment, refresh the app, and try again.
It is also worth checking whether Discord is having a wider outage by visiting Discord’s status page. If Discord services are degraded, creating new Group DMs, loading member lists, sending attachments, or receiving notifications may be delayed until the service recovers.
The Group DM disappeared
A Group DM can seem to disappear if you closed it from your DM list. Closing a DM does not always delete the conversation; it simply removes it from the visible list until a new message arrives. Ask another member to send a message, then check your Direct Messages again. If you left the Group DM yourself, you will need to be added back by someone still in the conversation, assuming there is room and you are eligible to be invited.
| Problem | Most likely cause | Quick fix |
|---|---|---|
| Friend does not appear | Friend request not accepted | Add them as a friend first |
| Cannot add more users | Group DM is full | Keep the group at 10 users or fewer |

Frequently Asked Questions
How many people can be in a Discord Group DM?
A Discord Group DM can include up to 10 users total, including you. If you need more people, create a private server instead, since servers support roles, channels, permissions, and much larger groups.
Can I add someone to a Group DM if they are not my Discord friend?
Usually, you need to be friends with someone before you can add them to a Group DM. If they do not appear in the add-user list, send them a friend request first or ask another group member who is friends with them to add them.
Will someone see old messages when they are added to a Discord Group DM?
Yes, when a person is added to an existing Group DM, they can typically see the message history in that chat. Do not add someone to an active Group DM if there are private messages, files, or links you do not want them to access.
Can I remove someone from a Discord Group DM?
You can remove someone from a Group DM if Discord shows the remove option for that member, usually through the member list or profile menu inside the chat. If you cannot remove them, you may need to leave the Group DM and start a new one with only the people you want included.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
What should I do if I cannot create or add people to a Group DM?
Check that the people you are trying to add are on your friends list, that the Group DM has not reached the 10-person limit, and that your app is updated. If the issue continues, restart Discord, try the desktop or mobile version instead, and confirm that privacy settings are not blocking direct messages or friend interactions.
Bottom Line
Setting up a Group DM in Discord is quick once the people you want to include are on your friends list: start a new DM, select mulle friends, and send a message to open the conversation. From there, you can rename the chat, manage notifications, add more eligible friends, or leave when you no longer need it.
If something is not working, check friend status, privacy settings, blocked users, member limits, and whether everyone can receive DMs. For larger communities or more control over roles, channels, and moderation, create a Discord server instead.
