Windows 11 Is Starting to Look Better, but Are Microsoft’s Apps Keeping Up?

Windows 11 is getting shell and File Explorer improvements, but Microsoft’s progress report is not proof that its individual apps are faster or better.

Windows 11 is getting documented work on its shell, responsiveness and File Explorer—but that is not proof that Microsoft’s individual apps have become faster or better. Microsoft’s July 2026 update describes engineering priorities, while its September release notes list specific Explorer changes. Neither provides independent, device-by-device evidence that every app is improving.

What Microsoft says it is improving in Windows 11

In a July 31, 2026 update, Microsoft described work on performance, reliability and interface polish. The company said it had strengthened WinUI 3 and extended it further into the Windows shell, including Widgets and the new Run experience. It also cited work on File Explorer architecture and reliability, Windows Search, Start, Snipping Tool, boot and logon, Windows Hello, and memory efficiency across Windows and relevant Chromium/WebView2 components. Microsoft said broader rollout of improvements would begin in fall 2026. Microsoft’s update is a company progress report, not an independent benchmark; it does not establish how much faster a particular PC will feel or when every change will reach every user.

Context menu and reliability

On August 17, Microsoft announced a redesigned context menu that was rolling out to Windows Insiders, along with work intended to reduce hangs and delays and improve File Explorer reliability. The announcement describes Insider-stage work, not a guarantee that the redesigned menu was already available to everyone. Microsoft’s context-menu announcement gives the dated rollout context.

September Release Preview changes

Microsoft’s September 10 Release Preview notes described further File Explorer adjustments: Home sections retain their expanded or collapsed state; cloud-file thumbnails are more reliable; properties in the Details pane are clearer; preview behavior for downloaded files is updated; and an issue that cleared address-bar contents in edit mode is fixed. These notes concern Release Preview builds, so they should not be read as evidence that each change was broadly released to all Windows PCs on that date. The build announcement identifies the channel and features.

Windows 11 version 26H2: availability is staged

On September 29, 2026, Microsoft announced general availability of Windows 11 version 26H2 for eligible devices running versions 24H2 and 25H2. Microsoft says many eligible devices can move to 26H2 using a small enablement package, but availability is controlled and staged; the update may not appear for every eligible PC at once. Check Microsoft’s 2026 Update guidance for the current eligibility and rollout details.

This status supersedes the preview-stage information in Microsoft’s August 27 announcement, which said 26H2 was in Release Preview. That post also noted that some experiences—including Windows settings backup, taskbar app actions and File Explorer enhancements—would be enabled for commercial devices. The August post is useful for that earlier channel context, not as the latest availability status.

Do these changes prove Microsoft’s apps are getting faster?

No universal conclusion follows from the available evidence. Microsoft’s account includes qualitative claims about responsiveness and memory efficiency, but it does not report an independently controlled benchmark that quantifies gains on specified hardware and builds. Nor does it provide comparative measurements for individual apps such as Outlook or Weather. The update’s mention of WinUI 3 or WebView2 work does not establish that a particular app has been rebuilt, uses less memory, or performs better for every user.

That distinction matters because the Windows shell and an app solve different problems. A cleaner context menu, improved Start experience or more reliable Explorer navigation can make Windows feel more polished without fixing an app’s missing features, awkward workflow or slow task. Conversely, an app may work well even while parts of the shell remain inconsistent. Treat shell improvements and app quality as separate questions; WindowsForum’s September 21 discussion makes the same distinction.

How to judge whether Windows 11 is improving for you

Evaluate the specific part of Windows you use rather than treating “Windows 11” as one performance score. A practical comparison looks at:

  • Visual consistency and control: Does the shell or app look coherent, and can you customize the experience you care about?
  • Responsiveness and memory use: Is an improvement measured on a stated device and build, or only described as an engineering goal?
  • Reliability and friction: Are hangs, navigation problems or repeated task failures actually addressed?
  • Feature completeness: Does the app handle your everyday task well, regardless of whether the surrounding shell looks better?
  • Rollout status: Is a change in Insider preview, Release Preview or broadly available? A preview note is not the same as a general release.

For a personal before-and-after check, use the same task and PC conditions on each build—for example, opening the same folder, finding a file, previewing it and using the context menu. Note the Windows version and whether the feature is enabled. That can help you decide whether the change matters in your workflow, but it is not a controlled benchmark and should not be generalized to other devices.

The verdict: a more promising shell, with app quality still unproven

Microsoft has laid out credible, specific work on Windows 11’s shell and File Explorer, including dated improvements moving through preview channels. That supports saying the operating system is receiving attention. It does not support saying Microsoft’s apps as a whole are now faster, lighter or more complete. Until Microsoft publishes app-specific measurements—or users can verify the relevant changes on their own builds—the fairest verdict is that Windows 11’s foundations may be getting better while the quality of individual apps remains a separate, unresolved question.
