First determine whether your app needs the value during the build or inside a Pages Function at runtime. Then confirm the secret is configured for production and redeploy after setting or changing it.
Why you cannot view a Pages secret after setting it
Cloudflare does not show a secret’s stored value again after you save it. The Pages Functions bindings documentation says: “You cannot see secrets after you set them and can only access secrets programmatically on context.env.” A masked or unavailable value in the dashboard, by itself, does not mean the secret is missing.

Instead of trying to reveal the saved value, check the binding name, deployment environment, and code path that consumes it. If you suspect the value was entered incorrectly, set it again and create a new production deployment.
First identify when your application needs the value
Pages has separate configuration contexts for the build process and Function runtime. Identify where the application reads the value before changing settings: a value used by the build command is not the same thing as a secret read by a Pages Function.
#1 Best Overall
If a Pages Function reads it at runtime
Use the Function’s supported environment binding, context.env. Check that the property name in your code matches the configured binding name exactly. Do not assume that a runtime secret is automatically available to browser-side JavaScript or included in static files.
If the build process needs it
Build variables are configured for the project’s build process. Review the build command and the code that runs during that command to confirm where the value is expected. A Function runtime binding should not be treated as automatically available during the build, and a build setting should not be assumed to provide a Function’s runtime secret.
Check the production environment and branch
Pages separates production deployments from preview deployments. In the project’s variables and secrets settings, verify that the binding is configured for the production environment—not only for previews. Then check that the failing deployment is actually the production deployment and that it uses the intended production branch.
Pages uses the configured production branch to determine which branch deploys to production. Preview deployments are separate, so a successful preview does not prove that the production deployment has the same settings or branch behavior. Cloudflare documents CF_PAGES_BRANCH as the branch name for the current deployment; it can help identify branch-specific build behavior, but it does not create or expose a custom secret.
Redeploy after setting or changing the secret
Cloudflare requires a secret to be set before a deployment that uses it. If you added or corrected the secret after the last production deployment, start a new production deployment after saving the setting. Check the newly created deployment rather than assuming an earlier deployment will pick up the change.

Open the relevant deployment in the Pages dashboard and review its details and build log. Confirm the build command, output directory, and Functions configuration where applicable. Compare the selected deployment’s branch and environment with the settings you checked above.
Rank #4
- Open the intended Pages project and inspect its variables and secrets settings. Confirm the binding name and production environment; do not expect the saved secret value to be readable.
- Trace where the application consumes the value: in the build command, or in a Pages Function through
context.env. - Verify that the failing deployment is production and that its branch matches the project’s production branch configuration.
- If you added or changed the secret after that deployment, create a new production deployment.
- If the issue remains, inspect the selected deployment’s build log, build command, output directory, and Functions setup.
Do not print or log the secret value while debugging. Use the binding name, whether the value is present, and the deployment’s environment and branch to diagnose the issue without exposing the credential.
