Windows 11 can switch keyboard layouts when multiple layouts are installed and you cycle between them, or when a display-language change also changes the layout. Check the active layout and installed layouts first. If the problem is specific to Microsoft IME, follow its separate compatibility troubleshooting steps.
What changes when Windows switches an input method?
A keyboard layout controls how keystrokes produce characters; the Windows display language controls the language used for interface elements. Changing a keyboard layout alone does not change the Windows interface language. Microsoft notes that changing the display language might also change the keyboard layout to match it. Microsoft Support explains the distinction and display-language interaction.

There is no single confirmed cause for every computer that appears to switch input automatically. The checks below help distinguish an installed-layout change from a display-language change or an issue limited to Microsoft IME.
How to identify and select the active layout
Look for the input-language indicator in the taskbar notification area. Select it to view the available layouts and choose the one you want. You can also press Windows key+Space to cycle through installed layouts. If nothing happens when you press that shortcut, Microsoft says only one keyboard layout is installed. See Microsoft’s instructions for switching layouts.

How to check, add, or remove installed layouts
- Open Settings > Time & language > Language & region.
- Inspect the language entries and their keyboard options to see which layouts are installed. A layout may appear under the current display language or under the language that matches that layout, so check both where relevant.
- Remove layouts you do not use. To add a missing layout, open the relevant language’s options and add it there.
Keeping several layouts is useful if you type in multiple languages, but it leaves more choices available to cycle through. Removing unused layouts simplifies the list; Microsoft documents this as a way to manage layouts, not as a guarantee that every automatic switch will stop. Microsoft’s language and keyboard settings guide.
What to check after changing the display language
If the keyboard layout changed after you changed Windows’ display language, check the input indicator on the sign-in screen and select the expected layout. Microsoft states: “When the Windows display language is changed, it might also change the keyboard layout to match the language.” Microsoft Support.

What to do if the taskbar language indicator is missing
The legacy desktop language bar and the taskbar input-language icon are alternatives. To restore the taskbar icon, open Settings > Time & language > Typing > Advanced keyboard settings and clear Use the desktop language bar when it’s available. This disables the legacy desktop bar. The documented settings cover layout selection, installed layouts, display-language interactions, and Microsoft IME. They do not establish that Windows 11 switches input per app or window, or explain why a particular PC changes input. To narrow down an unexplained case, note when it happens, which applications are involved, which layouts and input methods are installed, and the Windows build.
