How We Benchmark Laptops, Tablets, and PCs: What the Tests Tell You

Tom’s Guide’s stated lab process measures specific workloads before reviewer hands-on use. Learn what its performance, gaming, display, temperature, and battery tests can—and can’t—tell you.

Tom’s Guide says its laptop, tablet, and PC reviews begin with standardized lab tests, followed by reviewer hands-on use. Those tests measure specific workloads—such as file copying, gaming, display brightness, and battery life—not an all-purpose “worth your money” score. To use results wisely, compare the same test under matching versions and settings, then ask whether that workload reflects what you do.

What the lab process covers

In an article published September 16, 2026, Tom’s Guide describes testing Windows computers and tablets, gaming PCs, Macs, Chromebooks, and workstations. It says lab testing comes before a reviewer uses the device in real-world scenarios. The steps and figures below describe Tom’s Guide’s stated process as of that date, not a universal industry standard. Tom’s Guide’s test-lab explanation and its general review methodology provide the publisher’s accounts.

Preparation and repeatability

For Windows computers, Tom’s Guide says its lab follows a standard setup procedure, checks manufacturer settings against retail defaults, installs test applications, reboots, and runs tests with no other applications active. Display and power settings are also part of the setup. This matters because background activity or different power and display settings can affect results; a score is easiest to interpret when the tested conditions are known.

Lab results and reviewer use answer different questions

Benchmark runs help make defined tasks repeatable across devices. The subsequent reviewer assessment adds ordinary-use context: Tom’s Guide says that hands-on period can last days or weeks, depending on what is needed. Its general methodology also considers design, ease of use, features relative to competitors, and price. In some cases, it publishes a limited first look as an unrated hands-on review rather than a full rating. Neither a benchmark result nor a hands-on review alone establishes that a device is the right value for every buyer.

How everyday performance is measured

The lab’s listed tests probe different kinds of work, so their results should not be treated as interchangeable:

  • File transfer: A custom script copies a 25 GB folder containing mixed file types. The result speaks to that file-copy workload, not every kind of storage or application performance.
  • General processor and system tasks: Geekbench 6, Geekbench 7, and CrossMark cover different sets of tasks; a score from one suite is not a substitute for a result from another.
  • AI workloads: Geekbench AI tests AI-related tasks rather than general productivity as a whole.
  • Video encoding: HandBrake measures video transcoding performance.

Tom’s Guide’s September 2026 account names Geekbench 6.7 and Geekbench 7.0. It says each version has a baseline score of 2,500, but the reference systems differ: Geekbench 6 is calibrated against a Dell Precision 3460 with a Core i7-12700, while Geekbench 7 is calibrated against a Lenovo Legion with an AMD Ryzen 7 7700. The matching baseline number does not make the versions or reference machines interchangeable.

How to read graphics and gaming results

Tom’s Guide says it uses 3DMark, selecting tests according to whether a computer is intended for general use or gaming. It also tests games with built-in benchmarks to produce repeatable scenes. Productivity systems may be tested with Civilization VI and, in some cases, other demanding games.

For gaming PCs, the article says testing usually uses high or near-high settings at 1920 × 1080 and at the computer’s native resolution; some demanding games are run at lower detail. Tom’s Guide describes 30 frames per second (fps) as playable and 60 fps as genuinely smooth. Those are the publisher’s editorial thresholds, not universal standards. A frame-rate figure is useful only alongside the game, resolution, and graphics settings: a higher result at lower resolution or reduced detail is not a like-for-like comparison.

For Macs, the lab uses compatible cross-platform tests, but the methodology notes that some games require setting changes. That qualification can limit direct comparisons with results from other operating systems.

What the heat and display tests reveal

Temperature under a defined workload

For an ordinary laptop heat check, Tom’s Guide says it plays 4K video for 15 minutes, then measures temperatures with an infrared thermometer. Gaming laptops receive a separate test that repeatedly runs a Metro: Exodus workload. These tests represent different use patterns; a temperature reading is not meaningful without knowing which workload produced it.

Brightness and color

For laptops and all-in-one desktops, the lab names the Klein K10-A colorimeter for measuring color gamut volume in sRGB and DCI-P3, as well as brightness at five points on the screen. Tom’s Guide says it adapts its methods for OLED and HDR displays. These measurements add information that resolution alone cannot provide: two screens with the same pixel dimensions can differ in brightness and color reproduction.

How to interpret battery-life numbers

Tom’s Guide describes a laptop and tablet web-browsing test that cycles through pages over a closed Wi-Fi network until the device shuts down. The lab sets brightness to 150 nits, standardizes selected settings, and runs the test at least twice. This is a result for that web workload and setup, not a promise of the same runtime for every person or task.

Gaming battery life is measured separately with PCMark’s gaming battery test. Web browsing and gaming place different demands on a device, so their runtimes answer different questions. When comparing two products, check that both figures come from the same kind of test and comparable conditions.

Why platform and workload matter

The methodology changes by device type rather than applying one test suite to every computer. Tom’s Guide describes using compatible cross-platform tests for Macs; web or Android tests for Chromebooks; and professional creative or engineering workloads for workstations, including PugetBench, UL Procyon, and SPECworkstation. A general-purpose score cannot establish how a workstation will perform in a particular professional application.

Results across operating systems, benchmark versions, or workloads may not be directly comparable. For a useful comparison, identify the exact test and version, operating system, resolution and settings where relevant, and whether the workload resembles your own. For creative or engineering work, look for results from the specific professional workload you use rather than inferring performance from a broad system score.

A practical checklist for comparing two devices

  • Compare the same benchmark and software version; do not equate similarly named tests or matching baseline numbers across versions.
  • For games, match the title, resolution, and graphics settings before comparing frame rates.
  • For battery life, match the workload and test conditions, including brightness and network setup where reported.
  • For displays, look beyond resolution to brightness and color measurements.
  • For heat, note the workload used before temperature was measured.
  • For specialist work, compare results from the application or workload that matters to you.
  • Use lab results alongside hands-on observations of design, usability, features, and price—not as a standalone purchase verdict.
