Windows 11 Hidden Features Most Users Don’t Know About in 2026

Windows 11’s less obvious tools can streamline window layouts, reduce interruptions, enable voice control, and add useful File Explorer and Search options. Some newer features require specific updates or compatible hardware.

Windows 11 includes useful tools that are easy to miss: Snap Groups for restoring a window arrangement, Focus sessions for quiet work blocks, and Voice Access for controlling the PC by voice. Other changes—such as File Explorer tab shortcuts, search controls, and pen haptics—depend on your Windows update, device, or rollout.

Arrange windows with Snap layouts and return to them with Snap Groups

Snap layouts give you ready-made ways to position open windows. Hover over a window’s maximize button, or press Windows key + Z, to see the available layouts. Choose a position, then use Snap Assist to fill the remaining spaces with other open apps. The layouts offered can vary with display size. Microsoft’s Snap guidance explains the controls and options.

When you have arranged several apps together, Windows can preserve that arrangement as a Snap Group. Return to it from a taskbar app preview, Task View, or Alt + Tab rather than rebuilding the layout one window at a time. To change how snapping works, open Settings > System > Multitasking.

Use Focus sessions to quiet notifications for a work block

A Focus session can temporarily reduce interruptions by enabling Do Not Disturb. By default, it also hides taskbar badges and flashing indicators; you can customize the session duration and those behaviors. Start a session from the notification area, Settings > System > Focus, or the Clock app.

Clock can optionally connect to Spotify and Microsoft To Do. Those integrations are not required to use Focus, and the feature is meant to reduce interruptions rather than block every possible distraction. See Microsoft’s Focus session instructions for setup details.

Control Windows and write by voice with Voice Access

Voice Access lets you control the PC and author text by speaking, and Microsoft says it works without an internet connection. Microsoft Support states: “Voice access is available in Windows 11, version 22H2 and later.” Find setup and supported commands in Microsoft’s Voice Access guide.

Some Voice Access enhancements are tied to specific updates. Microsoft’s July 2026 preview notes describe Voice Isolation options, including removing background noise and using no filtering, as well as Korean language support. These preview notes do not establish that those options are available on every Windows 11 PC. Check the July 28, 2026 update notes if you are looking for those additions.

Find File Explorer and Search shortcuts that may be new to your PC

Open a folder in a new File Explorer tab

In Microsoft’s July 28, 2026 preview notes, middle-clicking a folder in the Address Bar or Home page opens it in a new tab. The same notes describe clearer file-size units in Details view. Availability depends on the update installed on your PC; if the behavior is absent, check Windows Update rather than assuming every Windows 11 build has it. Read the July 28 preview notes.

Adjust web and Store suggestions in Search

Microsoft’s August 27, 2026 preview notes describe controls for whether Windows Search includes web and Microsoft Store suggestions alongside local results. They also describe an option to automatically find additional relevant locations for indexing. Look under Settings > Privacy & Security > Search. These are update-specific settings, so the controls may not appear on every installation. Microsoft’s August 27 preview notes cover the changes.

Expect staged File Explorer changes

The September 22, 2026 preview update describes File Explorer Home remembering which sections you expanded or collapsed and changes to the preview pane. Microsoft identifies the experience as a gradual rollout, so a PC with the update may still not show it immediately. See the September 22 update notes and check Windows Update if your interface differs.

Touchpad scrolling controls

Microsoft’s July 2026 update notes include touchpad controls for scroll and zoom speed, plus accelerated scrolling. These are recent, update-dependent additions, and the available controls can depend on the device. The July preview notes describe the change.

Pen haptics

On compatible devices, haptic feedback can be enabled for certain actions such as snapping or resizing windows. Microsoft’s April 30, 2026 preview notes name Surface Slim Pen 2, ASUS Pen 3.0, and MSI Pen 2 as supported devices for certain actions. This is not a general feature of every pen or touchpad; check the specific device and Windows update. Consult Microsoft’s April 30 preview notes for the stated compatibility.
