If Windows 11 HDR turns off when you unplug a laptop, the likely cause is its battery-saving setting: Windows can disable HDR on battery and restore it when the laptop is plugged in again. If the timing does not match a power change, check the selected display and its HDR support, the external-display connection and projection mode, or whether only HDR video playback is affected.
First, note what happens just before HDR turns off
The timing helps narrow the diagnosis, but does not prove a cause by itself. Check whether HDR changes after unplugging the laptop, turning on battery saver, connecting or disconnecting a display, restarting or waking the PC, or starting a particular video or game.

- If it happens when you unplug a laptop, check its HDR battery setting first.
- If it happens when connecting an external display, check which display Windows selected, its HDR capability, projection mode, and the existing connection.
- If the Windows HDR switch stays on but a video looks non-HDR, troubleshoot streaming playback separately.
- If the problem began after a display-driver update, consider the external-monitor driver steps below.
Check whether battery power is switching HDR off
Microsoft documents a power-saving behavior on HDR-capable laptops: Windows may turn HDR off when the PC is on battery and turn it back on when the laptop is plugged in. Microsoft describes the behavior this way: “If HDR is turned on when your laptop is plugged in, HDR will be turned off to help save battery power when you unplug it.” See Microsoft Support’s HDR settings in Windows.

- Open Settings > System > Display.
- Select the HDR-capable display you want to check.
- Open HDR settings and review the battery option. Microsoft’s instructions describe clearing the option that turns HDR off when the PC is on battery.
Setting labels may distinguish HDR games and apps from HDR video streaming. Read the wording for the specific setting shown on your Windows version. Keeping HDR on while unplugged can reduce battery life.

Make sure you are changing the right display’s HDR setting
With more than one display connected, Windows settings apply to the display selected in Display settings. Select the HDR monitor or laptop panel before checking its capabilities or changing its HDR switch. Microsoft also recommends confirming HDR is enabled in the monitor or TV’s own menu; Windows cannot make a display operate in HDR if that display does not support the feature.
For a laptop connected to an external HDR monitor, check the projection mode. Microsoft notes that, in the described laptop setup, duplicating displays can leave HDR unsupported on the external display. Try extending the desktop instead: press Windows key + P, then choose Extend. See Microsoft’s HDR settings guidance for the relevant display and mode details.

Distinguish Windows HDR from HDR video streaming
A video that is not playing in HDR does not necessarily mean Windows turned off the main HDR setting. Streaming HDR has its own requirements: the display must support HDR video streaming, the app must support HDR playback, and playback and power settings must allow it. Battery options and battery saver can affect streaming behavior, and HDR streaming on battery uses more power.

Troubleshoot an external display that loses HDR or disappears
For an external monitor, start with the connection and accessories already in use rather than assuming new hardware is needed. Microsoft advises checking the connection and temporarily disconnecting docks, dongles, adapters, and other accessories to isolate whether one is involved. Reconnect devices one at a time and see whether the symptom returns.
- Confirm the external display is selected in Settings > System > Display and that its HDR capability is recognized.
- Check the display’s own menu and the Windows projection mode; if duplicating, test Extend.
- Temporarily remove existing docks, dongles, adapters, or other accessories from the connection path and test the display directly where possible.
- If the trouble began after a display-driver update, Microsoft says returning to a previous driver may resolve update-related external-monitor problems. Follow the PC or graphics-device maker’s instructions for driver changes.
Microsoft’s external monitor connection troubleshooting covers connection isolation and update-related driver issues. The guidance does not establish that a replacement cable, dock, or monitor is generally required.

Do not confuse Auto HDR with the main HDR switch
Auto HDR is a Windows 11 gaming feature that expands the color range and brightness for supported older games. It is configured in the HDR settings for a selected HDR-capable display, but it is distinct from the primary Windows HDR setting. Changing Auto HDR is therefore not a general fix when the system HDR switch itself keeps turning off. See Microsoft’s Auto HDR guidance.
