Set Offline Files Logoff Sync in Intune: Full or Quick

Configure the device-scoped Intune policy for full or quick Offline Files synchronization at logoff, with the correct ADMX-backed SyncML state.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To control Offline Files synchronization at logoff with Intune, deploy the device-scoped ADMX-backed policy at ./Device/Vendor/MSFT/Policy/Config/ADMX_OfflineFiles/Pol_SyncAtLogoff_2. Set it to Enabled for full synchronization or Disabled for quick synchronization. If the policy is Not configured, quick synchronization is the default and users can choose the method themselves.

What the policy controls

The Group Policy setting is Synchronize all offline files before logging off, under Computer Configuration > Network > Offline Files. It chooses the synchronization method at logoff; it does not turn the Offline Files feature on or off. A separate policy, Pol_Enabled, controls whether Offline Files is enabled. See Microsoft’s Policy CSP – ADMX_OfflineFiles.

Choose the policy state

Policy state Logoff behavior User control
Enabled Full synchronization. Microsoft says this ensures cached offline files are complete and current. The corresponding method option in the Offline Files tab is unavailable to the user.
Disabled Quick synchronization. Microsoft says this ensures files are complete, but does not ensure they are current. The corresponding method option in the Offline Files tab is unavailable to the user.
Not configured Quick synchronization is the default. Users can change the method in the Offline Files tab.

The practical trade-off is freshness versus user choice: full sync is intended to make cached files current, while quick sync does not provide that assurance. The Microsoft policy documentation does not establish a specific performance cost, so do not assume a particular logoff delay.

Deploy it through an Intune custom OMA-URI profile

Use the device-scoped URI for a device-assigned setting. This is an ADMX-backed policy, so the SyncML representation uses the string format <Format>chr</Format>. In the payload, represent the selected state with <enabled/> or <disabled/>. To return the policy to Not configured, delete the policy URI rather than sending an enabled or disabled state. Microsoft documents the ADMX-backed payload conventions in Understanding ADMX-backed policies.

#1 Best Overall
  1. Confirm applicability. Check that the target Windows device and edition support this CSP setting before assigning it.
  2. Create a custom OMA-URI configuration. In Intune, use the custom OMA-URI profile route and enter ./Device/Vendor/MSFT/Policy/Config/ADMX_OfflineFiles/Pol_SyncAtLogoff_2 as the OMA-URI.
  3. Set the data type and value. Use the string format required for an ADMX-backed policy. Supply the SyncML policy value for Enabled or Disabled; use a Delete operation on the URI when you want Not configured.
  4. Assign the profile to the intended device group. After deployment, verify the device’s applicability and the resulting policy value in your tenant. Intune’s portal labels and workflow can vary, and Microsoft’s CSP guidance defines the URI and SyncML contract rather than a complete portal walkthrough.

Use device scope and resolve conflicts

The device policy URI ends in Pol_SyncAtLogoff_2. A user-scoped counterpart exists at ./User/Vendor/MSFT/Policy/Config/ADMX_OfflineFiles/Pol_SyncAtLogoff_1. The device URI is the appropriate choice for a device-assigned Intune policy. If both computer and user settings are configured, the computer setting takes precedence.

Policy mapping for Group Policy and registry troubleshooting

Microsoft maps this setting to the OfflineFiles.admx administrative template and the registry value SyncAtLogoff under SoftwarePoliciesMicrosoftWindowsNetCache. These mappings can help administrators recognize the same setting when reviewing Group Policy or policy-related troubleshooting data; use the CSP URI and the expected SyncML state when configuring Intune.
