Windows 11 Game Crashes or Restarts: Find the Cause and Fix It

A game closing to desktop is not the same as Windows restarting. Classify the symptom first, then use the right checks for the game or the system.

First identify whether the game alone closes or Windows itself crashes or restarts. Those are different problems and call for different checks: a game exiting to the desktop points you toward the title and its software environment; a stop-code screen or forced restart may involve Windows, a driver, or hardware. Record what you see before changing settings.

Is it a game crash or a Windows crash?

Note which of these best describes the failure. A blank screen can be ambiguous, so check whether Windows still responds before treating it as a system restart.

  • The game closes to the desktop: Windows remains running and you can use other apps. Start with the game, its files, updates, and possible background-software conflicts.
  • The display goes blank, but Windows remains responsive: Record what happened and whether the game recovers. This is not the same as a confirmed Windows restart.
  • Windows shows a blue or gray stop-code screen, then restarts: Record the code and any module name displayed. Microsoft says an unexpected restart might be caused by a hardware device, its driver, or software (Microsoft Support).
  • The PC abruptly loses power and starts again: Treat repeated power loss as a system-level fault, not proof that a particular component is bad.

Write down the game title, when the problem began, whether one game or several are affected, the exact error wording, and any recent game, Windows, driver, or hardware changes. Those details help narrow the next check without assuming the game caused a Windows failure.

If only one game closes to the desktop

Restart, update, and check the game’s support notices

Restart the PC, then check the game’s own update channel and official support page for known issues or a recommended fix. Microsoft’s guidance for games that crash or close unexpectedly includes updating the game and consulting game-specific support (Microsoft Support). If only one title is affected, prioritize that game’s information before making broad changes to Windows or device drivers.

Test for background-software interference

A clean boot can help determine whether a background service or startup app is interfering. Use Microsoft’s current clean-boot instructions for the Windows steps (Microsoft Support). Treat the clean boot as a comparison test: see whether the game still closes, then return to normal startup and re-enable disabled items methodically. Do not leave diagnostic changes in place without knowing what they disabled.

Verify files if the game is on Steam

  1. Restart Steam.
  2. Open Library, right-click the game, and choose Properties.
  3. Choose Installed Files, then Verify integrity of game files.
  4. Let the check finish and test the game again.

Steam notes that some local configuration files may fail verification normally, so a small number of files reported as not validated does not necessarily mean the installation is broken (Steam Support). These steps apply to Steam games, not every game launcher.

If Windows shows a stop code or restarts

Capture the stop code and look at recent changes

Photograph or write down the stop code and any module name on the screen. The code and nearby system events can help direct investigation, but neither establishes that the game is at fault. If the issue began after adding hardware, Microsoft recommends removing the new device and checking whether the restart stops. If Windows is difficult to start normally, use Safe Mode to investigate (Microsoft Support).

Check devices, updates, and free space

  • Open Device Manager and look for warning symbols. Check the affected device’s status and driver information rather than installing a driver from an unrelated source.
  • Check Settings > Windows Update for available updates.
  • Make sure the Windows drive has free space. Microsoft gives 10% to 15% as a general free-space guideline, while noting that requirements vary by configuration (Microsoft Support).

Review events around the restart

Open Event Viewer and inspect entries around the time of the failure, alongside the stop code. A user-mode process can trigger a stop error while an underlying driver, hardware, or operating-system issue is involved; the app name alone does not prove the root cause (Microsoft Learn).

Use diagnostics when evidence points to hardware

If the pattern suggests a memory problem, run Windows Memory Diagnostics. You can also use diagnostics from the PC manufacturer. For BIOS or firmware, check the manufacturer’s support information for the exact PC model; do not apply firmware intended for another model (Microsoft Learn; Microsoft Support). If the PC is stable enough, preserve relevant crash details for qualified support. Microsoft notes that dump-file analysis can be difficult for inexperienced users, so advanced debugging is not a safe casual fix (Microsoft Learn).

What symptoms can—and cannot—tell you

Steam Support distinguishes a computer that blue-screens or restarts from a game or Steam problem: a blue or gray screen followed by a forced restart points to the computer, rather than proving a Steam or game fault (Steam Support). Slowdowns or stuttering before a failure can make overheating a clue worth investigating, but they do not diagnose the cause.

Microsoft Learn reports that, among the stop errors it analyzed, 70% were attributed to third-party driver code, 10% to hardware issues, 5% to Microsoft code, and 15% were unknown because memory was too corrupted to analyze (Microsoft Learn, 2025). These are Microsoft’s categories for analyzed stop errors—not probabilities for all game crashes, every unexpected restart, or an individual PC. Do not infer that an abrupt restart by itself proves a faulty power supply, graphics card, or memory module.

When to stop troubleshooting alone

If the PC repeatedly loses power, stop repeating demanding game sessions or stress tests. If you cannot safely inspect the machine, or basic checks do not resolve recurring system restarts, contact the PC manufacturer’s support or a qualified technician. Share the stop code, module name if shown, relevant event entries, and the changes that preceded the problem; do not replace a component until evidence or manufacturer diagnostics points to it.
