AirPods stem controls vary by model, and no setting guarantees the same result across every app, recording, device, or region.
Raise the iPhone’s media volume
- Start playing audio. Then press the iPhone’s volume-up button, or open Control Center and move the volume slider upward.
- Check the level during playback. If you adjusted the buttons before starting audio, confirm the media level once playback begins. Apple says that with Change with Buttons turned off under Settings > Sounds & Haptics, the buttons control media playback.

Use an AirPods volume gesture if your model supports it
Direct stem-swipe volume control is documented for AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case, AirPods Pro 2, and AirPods Pro 3. Swipe up on the stem to increase volume. Do not assume this gesture works on every AirPods generation; check the guide for your exact model if its controls differ.
AirPods can also be controlled from a connected iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, or Apple Watch. Apple’s model-specific instructions are in Play audio on AirPods, AirPods Pro, or AirPods Max.

Check whether Headphone Safety is limiting output
- On iPhone, open Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Headphone Safety.
- If Reduce Loud Audio is on, inspect its level. iPhone analyzes headphone audio and reduces sound above the selected threshold.
- If a headphone notification has prompted a lower level, you can turn the volume up again, subject to your device settings and regional rules.
Apple explains these settings in its headphone audio levels guide. The feature can make playback quieter than expected when the selected limit is reached; turning volume up may not override the configured limit or applicable regional restrictions.
Make soft sounds clearer with Headphone Accommodations
For supported Apple and Beats headphones, go to Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual > Headphone Accommodations, turn the feature on, then choose Customize Audio or an Audio Tuning option and a level. The adjustments can amplify soft sounds or emphasize selected frequencies, and can apply to media and calls.

For AirPods Pro in Transparency mode
AirPods Pro offer additional Transparency-mode adjustments, including amplification, balance, and tone. Conversation Boost is meant to focus on the person speaking in front of you; it is useful for face-to-face conversation, not a general music-volume setting. Apple documents these options in Customize Transparency mode for AirPods.

Keep listening volume in perspective
Apple warns: “Listening to audio on your headphones at too high a volume for too long can damage your hearing.” Its headphone-notification guidance gives exposure above 80 dB for a total of 40 hours within the last seven days as an example that can prompt a notification—not a universal safe-listening boundary. Individual risk can vary, and lower exposure is not guaranteed safe for everyone.
Apple says headphone audio measurements are most accurate with Apple or Beats headphones; measurements for other headphones may be estimated from iPhone volume. Read Apple’s headphone notification guidance for the example and measurement qualifications.
