First identify what VLC is playing: local video files, YouTube URLs, or a YouTube stream passed through another tool. If playback stops exactly at the end of a video, check VLC’s queue and repeat mode; if it stops mid-video, investigate that item’s source or stream instead. A playlist setting can control what VLC does with playable items, but it cannot make an unavailable URL or failed stream work.
Find out where playback stops
Note whether VLC stops at the end of a video or during playback, and whether the current entry is a local file, a YouTube URL, or a stream supplied by a tool such as yt-dlp. Record the VLC version and any error message before changing settings; the exact menu wording and button locations can vary by version.

If VLC is playing local video files
Check the queue and repeat mode
- Open VLC’s playlist. A third-party tutorial for VLC 3.0.x gives Ctrl+L as the shortcut; confirm the shortcut and controls in your installed version. VLC Help’s playlist looping guide was updated in July 2026.
- Confirm that the expected next video is in the playlist and that its file is still available at the saved location.
- Choose the repeat behavior that matches your intent: repeat the whole list to cycle through the VODs, or repeat one item to keep the current video playing. These are different behaviors.
If the playlist was saved and files have since been moved, its entries may no longer point to valid files. The cited VLC Help guide says saved playlists store absolute paths; this is a third-party guide, so check the actual entry and file location rather than assuming every playlist behaves identically.

Test with one known-good file
Play a local file you know works, followed by another known-good local file. If both advance, but YouTube-derived entries do not, focus on the URL or stream path. If local files also stop, inspect the queue, repeat mode, the failing file, and your VLC version. This comparison helps narrow the cause; it does not identify a particular fault by itself.

If you meant a YouTube playlist, use YouTube’s loop control
YouTube’s own playback controls are separate from VLC’s playlist and repeat behavior. YouTube Help explains how to loop a single video and how to loop a playlist: Loop videos or playlists on YouTube. Use the playlist’s Loop control in YouTube when you want YouTube to repeat its own playlist; changing that setting does not configure a separate VLC queue.
If VLC is playing YouTube URLs or a yt-dlp stream
A YouTube URL or a stream piped from yt-dlp depends on the VOD remaining accessible and on the extraction and playback path continuing to work. Check that the video still opens, that it has not ended, and that the tool or VLC has not reported an error. YouTube compatibility can change, so a previously working URL or setup is not guaranteed to keep working.
The yt-dlp documentation describes piping output to VLC and handling playlists, but that documents available workflows—not uninterrupted playback in every case. See the project’s README, embedding documentation, and FAQ. Treat this as a more troubleshooting-intensive route than playing local files or using YouTube’s own player.

Common causes and fixes
- There is no next item: open the playlist and add or select the expected next file or URL.
- Repeat is set to the wrong mode: choose repeat-all for a cycling list, or repeat-one for the current item.
- A local file was moved or removed: restore it to the expected location or update the playlist entry.
- A YouTube URL or stream fails: verify that the VOD remains accessible and inspect the error from VLC or the tool providing the stream. A repeat setting cannot repair a failed source.
- The symptom is unclear: change one thing at a time and note whether playback stopped mid-video or at its end, the exact error, VLC version, and whether the entry is a file or URL.
