You can run a radio-style YouTube livestream from a Windows PC with encoder software: enable live streaming for your channel, create an event in YouTube Studio, connect the encoder with the stream URL and key, route in your audio, then preview and start the broadcast. Before going live, confirm that you have the rights to use every track in a livestream and test the stream on an unlisted event. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content and may interrupt one when it detects a match.
Before you set up the stream
Check channel eligibility and activation time
Your channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable the feature well before your planned broadcast. YouTube’s general live-streaming help also states that creators must be at least 16. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.

Clear music and other audio for livestream use
Use only music and other material you have permission to broadcast on YouTube. Check that each license covers livestreaming, YouTube, the relevant territories, and any replay or archive you plan to leave available. YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content; a detected match can lead to a placeholder image, a temporary interruption, or termination. Even licensed material may be interrupted if its rights owner has not allowlisted your channel through Content ID. Ask the owner about allowlisting when applicable. YouTube Creator Music does not support licensing for live content, according to its Creator Music FAQ.

Choose an encoder workflow
YouTube supports webcam and encoder routes. For a radio-style program, an encoder is generally the better fit because it lets you route audio deliberately and compose an output with a static image or graphic, overlays, and optional spoken segments. YouTube’s encoder workflow supports software and hardware encoders; OBS is among the encoder contexts named in its documentation. The steps below describe the general workflow rather than requiring a particular paid program.
Set up the Windows PC and connect YouTube
- Enable live streaming: In YouTube Studio, complete channel verification and enable live streaming. Allow for the possible first-time activation wait before scheduling the broadcast.
- Create or schedule the event: Open YouTube Studio and select Create → Go live. In Live Control Room, choose the encoder or stream workflow, then create or schedule the event.
- Copy the connection details: Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the event. Treat the key like a password: do not post it or share it publicly. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before using it again.
- Configure the encoder: Install and open your chosen Windows encoder, select YouTube or RTMPS where available, and enter or connect the stream URL and key. Start with the encoder’s normal SDR preset unless your source, hardware, and workflow support HDR.
- Add the audio source: In the encoder’s audio mixer, select the actual music player or production input and confirm its level meter moves. For a host-led show, add a microphone input and balance it against the program audio. A music-only feed does not need a microphone.
- Add a visual if needed: A radio stream can use a still image, title card, or composed graphic as its video output. Keep the chosen resolution and frame rate within what the PC can encode reliably and the connection can upload steadily.
YouTube’s setup guidance recommends configuring the encoder at least two hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes before a scheduled broadcast. Those lead times give you room to identify connection or audio problems before viewers arrive.

Choose stable encoder and network settings
For standard dynamic range, YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance recommends RTMPS, H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), AAC or MP3 audio, and a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube transcodes incoming streams into playback formats. These are encoder recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular PC or connection can sustain a given setting. Check the current YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions when configuring a different codec or frame rate; the recommendations are version-sensitive.
| Output example | YouTube-recommended H.264 encoder bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 480p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommended encoder bitrates for the listed formats, not required internet speed measurements or guarantees. YouTube recommends around 20% network headroom above the combined stream bitrate and warns that other users or devices on a shared network can reduce the bandwidth available to your broadcast. For one 6 Mbps stream, that guidance works out to about 7.2 Mbps of stable available upload capacity (6 × 1.2); this is arithmetic from the headroom recommendation, not a separate YouTube-published figure. Measure upload capacity under realistic conditions and leave extra margin if it varies.

Choose a lower resolution or bitrate if your upload connection or PC cannot hold the higher setting without dropped frames or interruptions. A steady stream with audio that viewers can hear is more useful than a higher-spec output that your connection cannot sustain. YouTube recommends testing before starting a live stream; see its streaming tips for network and monitoring guidance.
Test, start, and monitor the broadcast
- Run an unlisted test: Send representative program audio through the encoder using an unlisted event. Check that the encoder’s audio meter responds and that the incoming preview in Live Control Room shows the intended signal.
- Check playback separately: Open the watch page on another device and listen for the expected level, balance, and continuity. This can reveal problems that are not obvious from the encoder preview alone.
- Start the public event: When the preview and audio are correct, start the broadcast in Live Control Room. Check stream health and listen for interruptions while it is running.
- End cleanly: Stop the event in YouTube Studio, then stop the encoder. Confirm the event has ended as expected.
Troubleshoot common problems
- You cannot start a live stream: Check channel verification, the live-streaming restriction history, and whether first-time activation is still pending. YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours.
- YouTube receives no signal: Confirm that the encoder is using the correct event’s stream URL and key, that the encoder is sending, and that your network permits the connection. If you suspect the key was exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- The stream buffers or drops frames: Check actual upload capacity, other traffic on the connection, and encoder load. Reduce resolution or bitrate until the stream is stable, and preserve network headroom rather than setting the encoder at the full measured upload rate.
- The preview has no audio: Select the correct playback or production source in the encoder mixer, check that its meter moves, and verify output audio in a separate test. For a host-led show, check the microphone input and balance.
- YouTube interrupts the stream or displays a placeholder: Review YouTube’s copyright notice and identify the matched material. Do not assume a track is cleared for livestreaming because it can be played elsewhere; confirm the license covers this use and ask the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting where relevant.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a pre-recorded radio program to keep playing on YouTube without leaving a Windows PC on, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay powered on at home. Every slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality-based tiers; StreamNeo does not re-encode the upload. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos to YouTube only; it does not broadcast from a camera.
