Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallA Windows 11 quality update keeps your current version serviced with cumulative security and other fixes. A feature update moves your PC to a new Windows version, adds or enables that release’s broader changes, and starts a new support timeline. The distinction is not absolute: Windows 11 can also receive feature improvements through monthly servicing.
How the two update types differ
| Question | Monthly quality update | Feature update |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Maintains a supported Windows version with cumulative security and non-security fixes. It can also deliver feature improvements. | Moves the PC to a new Windows version, with that release’s features and applicable earlier fixes. |
| Typical timing | Security updates are generally released on the second Tuesday of each month. Optional non-security previews typically arrive in the fourth week; out-of-band releases are exceptional. | Once per year, in the second half of the calendar year. |
| Does the Windows version change? | No. It services the version already installed. | Yes. It moves the device to a newer Windows version. |
| Support impact | Keeps the current version up to date, as long as that version remains in support. | Begins a new support lifecycle for the new version. |
Microsoft describes the release cadence and cumulative servicing model in its Windows client update release-cycle guidance.
What a monthly quality update includes
Quality updates are cumulative: the latest update for a Windows version includes previously released fixes for that version, as well as new security and non-security content. In Microsoft’s usual schedule, the monthly security release is the main routine update. Optional preview releases can provide non-security fixes and improvements earlier; content from the preceding preview is included in the applicable cumulative security update.
These updates are generally delivered through Windows Update, WSUS, and the Microsoft Update Catalog. Organizations can also manage deployment through tools such as Intune, Windows Autopatch, or Configuration Manager, as described in Microsoft’s release-cycle documentation.

Can monthly updates add Windows features?
Yes. Since Windows 11 version 22H2, Microsoft has introduced some feature enhancements through regular servicing rather than reserving every change for an annual version update. A feature may first appear in an optional non-security preview and later reach more devices through a monthly security update.
Availability can vary. Microsoft may roll out selected features gradually, and some features can be temporarily off by default on managed devices while organizations assess the change. Administrators have policy controls for managing this behavior; Microsoft documents them in its Windows Update client policy guidance.

So, “quality update” does not mean “fixes only.” The key difference is that a quality update services the installed version, while a feature update changes the Windows version and its support timeline.
Why a feature update matters for support
Each Windows 11 version has its own end-of-servicing date. Microsoft’s general policy gives Home and Pro-family releases 24 months of servicing, and Enterprise and Education-family releases 36 months. Exact dates depend on the version and edition; consult Microsoft’s Windows 11 release information for the current table, alongside its Windows lifecycle FAQ.

A PC must be on a supported version to continue receiving monthly quality updates. If the installed version reaches end of servicing, moving to a newer supported version is necessary to keep getting those updates. Organizations can stage feature-update deployments, but Microsoft cautions that installing them less often than annually can leave devices out of support and without monthly security updates once a version expires; see Microsoft’s update-strategy guidance.

Microsoft says eligible devices moving from Windows 11 24H2 to 25H2 use an enablement package. Much of the 25H2 content was already delivered through prior monthly security updates; the package activates the release features. This is a specific 24H2-to-25H2 case, not proof that every annual feature update is installed the same way. Details are in Microsoft’s 25H2 guidance for IT pros.
Quick Recap
Which update should you install?
- Install monthly quality updates to keep a supported Windows version current with security and other cumulative fixes.
- Plan for feature updates before the installed version reaches its end-of-servicing date, so the device can continue receiving monthly updates.
- If you manage organization devices, use deployment controls to stage feature updates and assess changes, while ensuring devices do not remain on an unsupported version.
