What’s actually slowing this PC down?

To check whether your Windows 11 PC supports Device Encryption, open System Information as an administrator and look in System Summary for Automatic Device Encryption Support or Device Encryption Support. A result of Meets prerequisites means the feature is available; it does not confirm that a drive is encrypted now.
Check Device Encryption support in System Information
- Sign in with an administrator account.
- Open Start, type System Information, right-click the result, and select Run as administrator.
- In System Summary, find Automatic Device Encryption Support or Device Encryption Support. Microsoft says Meets prerequisites means Device Encryption is available. If the field lists a reason it is unavailable, use that reason to choose what to check next.
Microsoft’s Device Encryption instructions describe this field as the direct support check. The label can vary, so look for either wording.

Check the TPM and Secure Boot when support is unavailable
Verify TPM status and version
Open Windows Security > Device security > Security processor details. Check that a security processor is shown and review its specification version. Microsoft’s TPM guidance says Windows 11 requires TPM 2.0. If the security processor section is missing, the TPM could be absent or disabled in UEFI; confirm your PC maker’s guidance before changing firmware settings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsInspect Secure Boot state
In System Information, check Secure Boot State. You can also open Windows Security > Device security and look for the Secure boot section. Microsoft’s Secure Boot guidance explains the feature, while its Windows device guidance points to System Information for checking the state.

Use the specific blocker, not a guess
- TPM is not usable: The device may lack a TPM, or it may be disabled in BIOS/UEFI. Verify details and model-specific instructions before changing firmware settings.
- WinRE is not configured: Microsoft lists an unconfigured Windows Recovery Environment as a possible reason Device Encryption is unavailable.
- PCR7 binding is not supported: Microsoft says this can be associated with Secure Boot being disabled or peripherals connected during startup, such as specialized network interfaces, docking stations, or external graphics cards. The status alone does not identify which cause applies to your PC.
These are possible prerequisites or causes, not a reason to toggle firmware settings blindly. Microsoft recommends consulting the device maker’s instructions for firmware changes.
Check whether a drive is encrypted now
Support and current protection are different questions. To check Device Encryption status, open Settings > Privacy & security > Device encryption, if that page is available. You can also inspect the relevant BitLocker controls for the drive in question. Microsoft’s Device Encryption guidance notes that the settings page may be absent because the feature is unavailable or because the signed-in account is a standard user. Use the System Information support field to distinguish those possibilities.

Understand Device Encryption and BitLocker
Microsoft describes Device Encryption as the simpler BitLocker feature, usually enabled automatically, while BitLocker Drive Encryption is a manually managed option for advanced scenarios. Organization-managed PCs may also be governed by work or school policy. When Device Encryption is enabled automatically or by an administrator, a recovery key may be saved to a Microsoft account or a work or school account, depending on how the device is managed. Microsoft’s BitLocker overview explains the distinction.

Why Windows 11 eligibility does not settle the question
Windows 11’s minimum requirements include UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability and TPM 2.0, but Microsoft notes that individual features can have requirements beyond the operating system minimum. A PC that runs Windows 11 therefore is not automatically confirmed to support Device Encryption. Use the dedicated support field in System Information for that answer. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 system requirements for the OS requirements.
