Windows 11 Dynamic Lighting vs. Manufacturer RGB Software: Which Should You Use?

Use Dynamic Lighting for centralized Windows controls on compatible devices; turn to the manufacturer app when your exact product needs vendor-specific controls.

Start with Windows 11 Dynamic Lighting if your exact keyboard, mouse, or other peripheral supports it and you want to manage lighting from one place in Settings. Use the manufacturer’s RGB app when you need controls or a workflow specific to that product. Compatibility and capabilities vary by device, so neither option is a universal winner.

What each option is for

Dynamic Lighting is Windows’ built-in interface for controlling supported lighting hardware. Its controls live in Settings and can apply to all compatible devices together or to an individual device. Microsoft describes support for devices implementing the open HID LampArray standard; the device’s implementation and firmware matter, not just its brand name. Microsoft’s device documentation explains how supported hardware reports LED information to Windows.

Manufacturer RGB software is the vendor’s control app for its products. Whether it offers the controls you want depends on the exact model and the app version. Microsoft’s documentation does not establish a complete, current comparison of every vendor app, so check the manufacturer’s documentation for your product before relying on a particular control or effect.

Which should you use?

What matters to you Windows 11 Dynamic Lighting Manufacturer RGB software
Centralized controls Convenient if your devices are compatible: global and individual-device settings are available in Windows Settings. Microsoft Support Requires the relevant manufacturer app; available controls depend on the product and software version.
Compatibility Requires a supported device implementation and, in some cases, current firmware. Microsoft Learn Microsoft’s 2023 rollout notes Depends on whether the vendor app supports your exact model; confirm with the manufacturer.
Mixing brands Can coordinate compatible devices from different manufacturers, though colors and brightness may differ between devices. Microsoft Learn Do not assume one vendor’s app will control another brand’s hardware; behavior varies and is not established across all apps.
App control Foreground apps and prioritized background ambient controllers can take control, depending on your settings. Microsoft Learn A background RGB controller may have priority over Windows and prevent Windows controls from appearing to take effect. Microsoft Support

Choose Dynamic Lighting for simpler Windows control

Use it as your first option when the device appears in Dynamic Lighting settings and its built-in controls meet your needs. It is especially useful when you want to set a common look across supported devices without managing separate controls for each one.

ARGB PC Fans Controller Kit, 5V 3PIN Computer Fan Controller SATA Direct Supply Power RGB PC Fan Control Multiple Lighting Modes for Light Strip Light Plate
  • Direct Connection Without a Motherboard: No motherboard ARGB support is required. Simply plug it into the power supply's SATA interface for power, easily converting and controlling 5V 3-pin ARGB products. Even older PCs can achieve stunning lighting effects.
  • Multi-Mode Control: Built-in multiple lighting modes, including single color, cycle, and rainbow; M key switches modes, S key offers 8-level speed adjustment (press and hold for 4 seconds to turn the lights on/off), C key changes color and offers 6 levels of brightness adjustment.
  • Long Cable Compatibility: The 3-pin interface cable is 160±10mm long, and the SATA cable is 500±10mm long. The extension cable design solves the problem of insufficient cable length; the controller is compact and doesn't take up much space.
  • Pin Protection: The 3-pin interface is equipped with a protective cover to effectively prevent pin bending and deformation, extending the lifespan of the device and ensuring safer use and storage.
  • Plug and Play: No complicated settings required. Simply plug it in to control the lighting. Compatible with various 5V 3-pin ARGB devices, creating a personalized lighting atmosphere for your case, fans, and other hardware. A must-have for gamers.

Choose the manufacturer app for product-specific control

Keep or use the vendor app if its documentation confirms a control or workflow you need for your exact device. Do not assume a feature is exclusive to the vendor app—or available in it—without checking that product’s current documentation.

How to control RGB lights in Windows 11

  1. Open Settings > Personalization > Dynamic Lighting.
  2. Check whether your peripheral appears as a device card. If it does not, Windows may not recognize it as a supported Dynamic Lighting device; verify compatibility and firmware with the manufacturer.
  3. Adjust the available global controls for the overall setup, such as brightness, color, or effects.
  4. Select an individual device card to configure that peripheral separately. Its device-specific settings take precedence over the global settings for that device.

Microsoft’s setup guide describes the settings and available controls. Microsoft listed Logitech G LIGHTSYNC RGB devices as supported in its device documentation, but that is not proof that every Logitech G model works. Its page also describes partner plans or support across Acer, SteelSeries, ASUS ROG, Twinkly, Razer, OMEN, HP Victus, and HyperX; brand-level references do not confirm compatibility for every model or current product. Check the exact device and firmware before counting on support. Microsoft Learn: Dynamic Lighting devices

Why isn’t Dynamic Lighting changing my keyboard?

First confirm that Windows shows the keyboard as a device card. If it does, another app may currently control the lighting.

  1. In Settings > Personalization > Dynamic Lighting, expand Background light control.
  2. Inspect the controller order. If a background RGB app is listed above Windows, move the controller you want to use higher in the order.
  3. Check whether a compatible foreground app is enabled to control lighting. App priority settings determine which controller takes over.
  4. If you moved the device to another USB port, check the settings again. Background-control settings are associated with the device and its port, so a different port can cause it to appear as a different device.

If a device is not selected for background control, it can operate autonomously and follow its firmware’s default lighting behavior. Microsoft’s Dynamic Lighting developer documentation describes this behavior and the app-priority model.

Will my RGB keyboard work with Dynamic Lighting?

Check the exact model in Microsoft’s Dynamic Lighting device documentation and confirm current firmware requirements with the manufacturer. Support for a brand, product family, or planned partner rollout is not a guarantee for every keyboard sold under that name. Microsoft’s 2023 rollout notes said compatible devices required the latest firmware at that time; current requirements can depend on the device. Windows configuration update, September 26, 2023
