What makes an RGB device compatible with Dynamic Lighting?
Microsoft bases Dynamic Lighting compatibility on the HID LampArray standard. A device can implement LampArray in its firmware or through a Virtual HID Framework (VHF) driver. Windows uses information the device reports about its LEDs, including their positions, to apply lighting effects to its layout. A product listing that says only “RGB” does not establish that it supports this standard. Microsoft’s Dynamic Lighting device documentation describes these requirements.

Microsoft’s documentation lists possible LampArray device categories including keyboards and keypads, mice, game controllers, speakers, mouse pads, bulbs, spotlights, notification devices, chassis components such as RAM, motherboards and fans, wearables, furniture, art, and headsets. Its taxonomy also includes vendor-defined devices. These are device types Windows can address when implemented compatibly—not a guarantee that every product in those categories will work.
As a manufacturer-family example, Microsoft states that “All Logitech G LIGHTSYNC RGB devices are supported.” That statement does not provide a model-by-model or connection-mode list, so check the exact product and whether support applies over USB, a wireless dongle, or Bluetooth.

How to check whether your device appears in Windows
- Connect the device and open Settings > Personalization > Dynamic Lighting.
- Look for its device card at the top of the page. Select the card to adjust settings for that device. Microsoft says per-device settings override global settings for that device.
- If the device is missing, check Microsoft’s supported-device information and the manufacturer’s support page for the exact model. Check the connection type separately; a related model’s support does not prove that yours, or its wireless mode, is supported.
- If the card is present but Windows’ effects do not seem to control the lighting, check Background light control and the priorities assigned to other lighting apps.

Why lighting can behave differently even on a supported device
Dynamic Lighting settings do not necessarily have sole control of a compatible device. By default, foreground apps can control a LampArray device. If more than one ambient background app requests control, Windows uses the priority order set in Dynamic Lighting Settings. A device that is not selected for background light control can instead run its firmware-defined autonomous mode. This can make a game, a manufacturer’s RGB utility, or a stored device effect appear to override Windows.

Background-light settings are associated with both the device and its USB port. Moving a device to a different port can cause Windows to treat it as a different device for these settings. If Windows’ controls stop affecting lighting, review the background-control selection and priority for the device and port in use.

Even when two devices are compatible, their colors and brightness may differ slightly because of manufacturer variation. A small mismatch in shade by itself does not show that Dynamic Lighting is malfunctioning.

- Exact-model support: Look for explicit Dynamic Lighting or LampArray support for the product you intend to use, not merely a claim that it has RGB lighting.
- Connection mode: Confirm whether support is documented for wired USB, a wireless dongle, Bluetooth, or the mode you plan to use. Microsoft’s cited material does not provide a complete model-by-model connection matrix.
- Lighting layout: Check whether the device exposes its LEDs and their positions in a way Windows can address for the effects you want.
- App control: Consider whether Windows’ built-in settings meet your needs or whether you rely on a game or background lighting app that may take priority.
- Cross-device appearance: Allow for slight differences in color and brightness between manufacturers.
