Focus can turn on Do not disturb, but Do not disturb also works on its own—and it may remain on after a Focus session ends.
How Focus and Do not disturb differ
| What you need | Focus | Do not disturb |
|---|---|---|
| Main purpose | Run a timed focus session. | Silence most notification banners. |
| Session controls | Choose a duration; optionally show the Clock timer and hide taskbar badges or flashing. | Set automatic triggers and choose priority notifications that may still come through. |
| How it starts | From the taskbar clock or notification area, Settings > System > Focus, or Clock > Focus sessions. | Manually from notification center or automatically through configured conditions. |
| How they relate | Can turn on Do not disturb during a session. | Can be active without Focus and may remain on after a session ends. |
| Notifications during use | Review notifications received during the session in notification center. | Other notifications go directly to notification center while it is active. |
In short, choose Focus for a bounded session with session-specific controls. Choose Do not disturb when you want to silence banners without starting a timer. Microsoft’s Focus guidance and notification guidance describe the features; exact wording or placement can vary by Windows build.
When to use Focus
Focus is useful when you want to work for a chosen period and optionally reduce visual distractions on the taskbar. Its settings let you choose a session duration, whether to show the Clock timer, whether to hide taskbar badges and flashing, and whether to turn on Do not disturb.
You can start a session from the taskbar, Settings, or the Clock app. Clock also offers optional Spotify audio and Microsoft To Do task integration.

Start a Focus session
- From the taskbar: Select the clock or notification bell, choose a session length, then select Focus. Windows key + N opens the notification area.
- From Settings: Go to Settings > System > Focus, then select Start focus session.
- From Clock: Open Clock > Focus sessions, choose a duration and optional breaks, then start.
When to use Do not disturb
Use Do not disturb when you want to silence most notification banners without starting a timed session. It can be toggled manually from notification center, or Windows can activate it automatically according to settings.
Toggle or configure it
- Toggle it: Open notification center and select the bell icon marked with zZ.
- Set automatic activation and exceptions: Go to Settings > System > Notifications. Expand the automatic-activation controls or configure priority notifications.
Automatic triggers can include certain hours, duplicating a display, playing a game, using an app full-screen, or the first hour after a Windows feature update. Priority notification settings can allow calls, reminders, and selected apps through. Microsoft says other notifications go to notification center while Do not disturb is on, so you can review them later.
Why Do not disturb may stay on after Focus ends
Starting Focus turns on Do not disturb if that option is enabled in Focus settings. But if Do not disturb was already on before the session began, Microsoft says it stays on when the session ends. If it is still active afterward, check whether it was on beforehand and whether an automatic activation condition applies.
