Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf Windows 11 does not reopen your apps after a reboot, first check Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options and enable Automatically save my restartable apps and restart them when I sign back in. This setting attempts to restore eligible apps after you sign in; it does not guarantee that every app or its previous document will return.
Turn on Windows’ restartable-app setting
- Open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
- Turn on Automatically save my restartable apps and restart them when I sign back in. Microsoft gives this exact label in its guide to navigating Windows sign-in options.
- Restart Windows, then sign in normally to check whether eligible apps return.
If the control is missing or unavailable, its availability may depend on device configuration. An account policy can also disable it. On a work- or school-managed computer, ask your IT administrator rather than trying to change policy settings yourself. Microsoft notes that Sign-in options can vary by device configuration.

Work out whether the problem affects one app or several
If several apps that used to return are missing, recheck the setting and consider whether Windows signed you into the expected account and loaded your usual profile. If only one app is missing, the cause may be app-specific: Windows does not provide a universal compatibility list, and the setting does not establish that every program supports session restoration. Check the app publisher’s guidance for its behavior after a restart.

Restartable-app restoration and automatic startup are different. Restoration attempts to bring back eligible apps from the previous session. Startup configuration launches selected apps whenever you sign in; it does not necessarily reopen the previous document or session.

- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
- Open Settings > Apps > Startup, or open Task Manager > Startup apps.
- Find the app and enable it if it is listed and you want it to launch at every sign-in.
- If it is not listed, Windows may require a different setup through File Explorer. Microsoft explains these options in its guide to configuring startup applications.
Repair an app that is malfunctioning
Repair is relevant when the app is installed but is not running correctly—not simply because Windows did not restore its prior session.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the app’s menu, then choose Advanced options if available.
- Choose Repair. If Repair is unavailable or does not help, Microsoft lists Reset as a next step.
These controls are not available for every app. Before resetting, check the app publisher’s guidance on what a reset changes. Microsoft’s Repair apps and programs instructions describe the options.

Check for a temporary profile if other things are missing
If Windows says “We can’t sign in to your account” or tells you that you are using a temporary profile, the issue is broader than app restoration. Windows may not have loaded your usual profile, so familiar settings or files can appear to be gone. Microsoft warns that changes made in a temporary profile are lost when you sign out. Save or copy any work you created there before signing out, then follow Microsoft’s temporary-profile sign-in guidance and check whether restarting returns your original profile.
Escalate only if Windows itself is unstable
A single app failing to reopen is not, by itself, a reason to reset or reinstall Windows. If Windows has wider stability or sign-in problems, use Microsoft’s Windows recovery options guide and begin with the least disruptive applicable step. Some recovery actions can affect data, so back up important files first. For sign-in trouble that persists, Microsoft also documents Windows sign-in troubleshooting.
