A $3–$5 VPS can give you a clearly specified monthly package of CPU, memory, storage, and data transfer—but it does not automatically outperform a free server. Oracle’s Always Free tier, for example, includes substantial compute allowances on paper. The practical difference is whether a particular plan’s configuration, network options, billing terms, and availability suit your workload.
What $3.50 or $5 buys in AWS Lightsail
AWS Lightsail publishes these Linux plan configurations. They are provider-stated allocations, not performance benchmarks.

These configurations are listed in AWS’s Lightsail instance bundles. The address type matters: the $3.50 and $5 IPv6-only bundles are not interchangeable with the $5 public-IPv4 bundle just because they share a price point.
What Oracle’s Always Free tier offers instead
Oracle documents up to two AMD VM.Standard.E2.1.Micro instances under Always Free. It also provides separate Ampere A1 free-use allowances of 1,500 OCPU hours and 9,000 GB-hours per month. For Always Free tenancies, Oracle describes that A1 allowance as equivalent to 2 OCPUs and 12 GB of memory.

Those free resources make a blanket claim that paid VPS capacity cannot be matched by a free tier inaccurate. The comparison is between specific configurations and terms, not simply free versus paid. Oracle requires instances to be placed in the tenancy’s home region, and it notes that temporary host-capacity shortages can prevent provisioning. Compare the terms that affect your workload
CPU and memory
Start with the demands of the software you intend to run. A listed CPU count or memory allowance does not establish how fast an instance will perform for your workload. The cited plan specifications do not provide a cross-provider benchmark.

Storage
Compare the capacity and type of storage included in the exact plan, then account for the operating system, application files, logs, and user data. A larger advertised compute allowance does not tell you how much storage is available; check each provider’s configuration separately.
Public IPv4, dual-stack, or IPv6-only access
Check which address types your clients and services require. An IPv6-only instance may be suitable for some deployments but not for a service that needs public IPv4 connectivity. In the Lightsail examples, the public-IPv4 and IPv6-only plans have different listed bundles even at the same $5 monthly price.

Data transfer
Compare the included transfer allowance and the provider’s terms for usage beyond it. The cited Lightsail bundles include 1 TB on the $3.50 IPv6-only and $5 public-IPv4 plans, and 2 TB on the $5 IPv6-only plan. Do not assume that a transfer figure or its consequences are the same across providers.

Billing when stopped or deleted
A stopped Lightsail instance continues to accrue charges until it is deleted. AWS says plans are billed hourly up to the maximum monthly plan cost, and early deletion is prorated by hours used. Stopping the server is therefore not the same as ending the charge; see AWS’s Lightsail billing and account management guidance.
Eligibility, region, and capacity
For a free allocation, check the account or tenancy conditions, eligible region, and provisioning constraints before designing around it. Oracle’s home-region requirement and capacity warning can matter if you need a particular location or need to create an instance when capacity is constrained.

- Choose a free allocation when its documented resources fit your workload and its eligibility, region, and provisioning conditions work for you.
- Choose a paid plan when a specific published bundle, such as a required address type or transfer allowance, solves a concrete need and its billing terms are acceptable.
- Compare the live configurations before committing. DigitalOcean describes Droplet plans as bundles with monthly caps, but the cited pricing page does not establish a numeric configuration for a like-for-like comparison; check its current Droplet pricing directly.
Provider prices and allowances can change and may vary by plan or region. The examples above describe the cited provider pages, not a universal survey of VPS offerings.
