There is no single Windows 11 switch that disables every Copilot-related feature. The Copilot app and its taskbar launcher, the Copilot keyboard key, Recall, Click to Do, natural-language Windows Search, and the Settings agent have separate controls. Removing an icon only changes how you launch an app; it does not necessarily disable the app or other Windows AI features.
This guide explains what each experience does, which Windows editions and devices can use it, what data it handles, and the exact setting to use when you want to hide, pause, disable, or remove it.

First, identify which “Copilot” you want to change
In Windows 11, “Copilot” can mean the Microsoft Copilot app, an icon on the taskbar, a dedicated keyboard key, or a separate Windows feature available only on Copilot+ PCs. These components are related but independently controlled.

Microsoft says feature availability and rollout timing vary by device and market. An organization can also restrict a feature on a managed work or school PC.

Microsoft Copilot app: taskbar, shortcut and voice controls
What the app does
The Microsoft Copilot app may arrive preinstalled on a new Windows 11 PC, or it may be available for installation through Microsoft’s normal app channels. Depending on the signed-in account and current service availability, it can provide conversational answers, create images, maintain longer conversations and accept voice interaction. A Copilot keyboard key or Windows+C can open it. Microsoft also documents an opt-in “Hey, Copilot” wake word on supported configurations.
Those capabilities belong to the app. Recall and Click to Do are not merely modes inside the same window, so hiding or closing the app does not turn them off.
Remove the Copilot icon from the taskbar
- Open Settings.
- Select Personalization, then Taskbar.
- Find the Copilot or Ask Copilot setting shown on your Windows build.
- Switch the setting off to remove the taskbar launch entry. If your build presents a different label, use the control that governs the Copilot taskbar item rather than uninstalling an unrelated app.
The exact label and available choices can change with Windows updates. Removing the icon only removes that launch surface. The app can still be opened through another shortcut, the Start menu or an assigned keyboard key.

- Go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Keyboard.
- Select Customise Copilot key on keyboard.
- Choose one of the behaviors offered on your PC, such as Search, Microsoft Copilot or Custom. Some systems also show a Copilot choice separately.
- Apply the selection and test the key in a text field or the desktop.
The list depends on your account settings and installed applications. On some builds, the taskbar Copilot setting can override the key selection. Therefore, if the key still opens Copilot, check the taskbar setting as well as the keyboard page.
Change keyboard shortcuts and wake-word behavior in the app
Open the Copilot app and go to Account > Settings. If your build exposes a Copilot Keyboard Shortcuts setting or a voice and wake-word option, adjust it there. This is an app preference, not a global Windows switch. Turning off a wake word does not remove the taskbar icon, and assigning the key to Search does not uninstall the app.

Recall: snapshots, privacy and complete removal
What Recall is
Recall is a Copilot+ PC experience that helps you search and revisit earlier activity by indexing snapshots of the active screen. It is not available on every Windows 11 computer. A supported Copilot+ PC needs the required neural processing hardware, memory, storage, security configuration and Windows Hello enrollment. Microsoft’s current support material lists minimum requirements including a 40 TOPS NPU, 16 GB of RAM, 256 GB of storage, at least 50 GB of free space to enable the feature, device encryption or BitLocker, and Windows Hello Enhanced Sign-in Security. Requirements and eligibility can change, so verify the requirements displayed for your model and Windows release.
Snapshot saving is opt-in and off by default for a new user unless it is enabled during setup. Recall requires Windows Hello authentication. Microsoft says snapshots and their associated index are encrypted locally, and its privacy documentation states: “You’re always in control of what’s saved as a snapshot.”
Stop saving new snapshots
- Open Settings.
- Choose Privacy & security.
- Open Recall & snapshots.
- Set Save snapshots to Off.
This stops future collection. It does not necessarily remove the Recall component or delete snapshots already stored.
Pause, filter and delete snapshots
Use the Recall system-tray control to pause saving temporarily. In the Recall settings page, you can also filter particular apps and websites, change how long snapshots are retained, adjust storage allocation and delete saved snapshots. These controls let you keep Recall installed while limiting what it records.
Remove Recall entirely
- Open the Windows search box and type Turn Windows features on or off.
- Open the matching system control.
- Clear the Recall feature, then confirm the change.
- Restart if Windows requests it.
Microsoft warns that removing Recall deletes saved snapshots. Removing the feature is therefore different from switching off snapshot saving: the former removes the component and its stored data, while the latter stops new snapshots but can leave existing data until you delete it.

Click to Do: current-screen actions and its off switch
What Click to Do can perform
Click to Do works on content currently visible on a Copilot+ PC screen. For selected text, supported actions can include summarizing, creating a bulleted list and rewriting. For images, available actions can include copying, saving, sharing, visual search, background blur, object erasure and background removal through supporting apps. Selected content can also be passed to Copilot or Microsoft Copilot.

The action list is not fixed. Region, language, installed applications, account type and organization policy can change what appears.
Disable Click to Do
- Open Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Open Click to Do.
- Set the feature to Off.
The setting disables Click to Do; it does not uninstall the underlying Windows component. Its standard Windows+click, Windows+Q and touch-swipe launch gestures stop working. Other entry points may remain visible in the interface but fail to open the feature.
Understand where Click to Do data goes
Processing depends on the action. Microsoft says selected text for supported intelligent text actions is processed locally by Phi Silica on the Copilot+ PC. If you choose web search or visual search, the selected content is sent to the relevant online provider. Temporary files may also be used when content is transferred to another app.
Consequently, “processed on the device” describes particular actions, not every possible handoff. Check the action name before selecting a web or visual search option, especially when the screen contains confidential information.

Copilot+ Windows Search and the Settings agent
Natural-language search
Microsoft’s Windows 11 2025 Update overview describes natural-language search on Copilot+ PCs for files, photos and settings. Instead of remembering an exact filename or control-panel label, you can describe what you want in ordinary language. This search experience is separate from the Copilot app’s taskbar launcher.
Copilot-powered Settings agent
The update overview also describes a Settings agent that can help locate and change settings using natural-language requests. The material reviewed describes it as available when the primary display language is English. Device eligibility, rollout stage, account status and organization policy can affect whether it appears.
Neither experience is disabled by removing the Copilot taskbar icon or changing the Copilot key. Microsoft does not document one universal switch in the Copilot app settings that turns off all natural-language Search and Settings-agent behavior. If a work or school administrator manages the PC, policy may be the only way to control availability.

Common problems and fixes
The taskbar icon disappeared, but Copilot still opens
That is expected when only the taskbar launch control was changed. Check the Copilot key, Windows+C, the Start menu and the app’s own keyboard-shortcut setting. Disable or reassign each launch method you do not want.

The Copilot key ignores my selection
Reopen the keyboard customization page and confirm the selected behavior. Then inspect the taskbar Copilot setting because Microsoft documents that it can override the key selection. Account restrictions or an installed application can also limit the choices.
I cannot find Recall
Recall appears only on eligible Copilot+ PCs and may be unavailable on managed commercial or education devices. Check whether the PC has the required NPU, memory, storage, encryption and Windows Hello configuration, then install current Windows updates. A missing menu does not mean Recall is silently recording; snapshot saving is off by default for a new user unless enabled.
Click to Do is listed but gestures do nothing
Confirm Settings > Privacy & security > Click to Do is set to On. When it is off, the Windows+click, Windows+Q and touch-swipe gestures no longer launch the feature even if an entry point remains visible.
A feature is unavailable on a work or school PC
Organization policy can restrict Copilot, Recall, Click to Do or related experiences. In that situation, a local user setting may be hidden, locked or ineffective. Contact the administrator rather than attempting to remove system components.

Windows 11 Copilot experiences do not have identical global availability. Device model, Windows edition and update level determine whether a feature is installed. Region and market affect rollout. Language can matter: the Settings agent described in Microsoft’s update material requires an English primary display language. Account type and sign-in state affect the Copilot app’s capabilities and the choices shown for the Copilot key. Installed applications determine some Custom-key and Click to Do actions.
Because Microsoft changes menus during Windows updates, use the labels visible on your own build. If a documented path is missing, search Settings for “Copilot,” “Recall,” or “Click to Do,” and check Windows Update before assuming the feature has been removed.
A practical privacy checklist
- Decide whether you want to hide a launcher, stop collection, delete stored data or remove a Windows component; these are different outcomes.
- For Recall, turn Save snapshots off, then delete existing snapshots if you do not want previously captured activity retained.
- Use Recall’s app and website filters if you keep the feature enabled but want to exclude sensitive areas.
- For Click to Do, distinguish local Phi Silica actions from web search, visual search and transfers to other apps.
- Review the signed-in account and organization policy when the available Copilot features or keyboard choices differ from Microsoft’s description.
- Recheck settings after a major Windows update because labels, rollout status and supported actions can change.
The short answer to “How do I turn off Copilot in Windows 11?”
Turn off the taskbar Copilot setting to remove its icon, change the Copilot-key behavior on the Bluetooth & devices > Keyboard page, set Recall’s Save snapshots to Off or remove Recall through Windows Features, and disable Click to Do under Privacy & security. Those actions cover the documented controls, but they do not constitute one universal off switch for every Copilot-related Windows experience.
