Windows 11 Color Filters vs. Contrast Themes: Which Setting Helps?

Color filters help separate items that differ by color; contrast themes make text and interface elements stand out. Here’s how to set up and test each in Windows 11.

Use color filters when colors are difficult to tell apart; use contrast themes when text or interface elements blend into their backgrounds. They address different visibility problems, and Windows 11 lets you try them separately. Check the result in the apps and features you use most rather than assuming one setting works best for everyone.

How color filters and contrast themes differ

If you have trouble with… Try first What it changes
Colors in charts, indicators, or other items that are hard to distinguish from one another Color filters They change the screen’s color palette to help distinguish items that differ only by color. Microsoft explains color filters.
Text, links, buttons, or other interface details blending into the background Contrast themes They apply distinct color combinations to improve the visibility of text and interface elements, and let you customize those colors. See Microsoft’s contrast-theme instructions.

These are separate Windows settings with different purposes, not a required either-or choice. The documentation does not establish that one is appropriate for a particular person or condition. You can test each against the task that is difficult for you.

Turn on and choose a color filter

  1. Open Start > Settings > Accessibility > Color filters. Alternatively, press Windows logo key + U to open Accessibility settings.
  2. Turn on Color filters, then select a filter and check how it looks in the apps or pages you use.
  3. For a keyboard toggle, enable Keyboard shortcut for color filters on the same settings page. Then press Windows logo key + Ctrl + C to switch the filters on or off. The shortcut is available only after you enable that option.

Windows includes filters for deuteranopia, protanopia, and tritanopia. Microsoft recommends checking the selected filter in the apps you use most; the names alone do not establish which option will work best for you. See Microsoft’s color-filter guide and its guidance on making Windows easier to see.

Apply or customize a contrast theme

  1. Open Start > Settings > Accessibility > Contrast themes.
  2. Choose a theme from the menu and select Apply.
  3. To adjust its colors, select Edit. Choose a screen element—such as background, text, hyperlinks, inactive text, selected text, or button text—then select a color and adjust its brightness. Select Done when finished.
  4. Select Save as to name and save your custom theme, then save and apply it.
  5. To return to the default colors, choose None and select Apply.

Windows 11 Settings uses the label Contrast themes. Microsoft’s shortcut instructions still refer to high contrast mode: press Left Alt + Left Shift + Print Screen to toggle the selected mode. For the settings and customization steps, see Microsoft’s contrast guidance.

How to tell which setting works for you

  1. Identify the specific difficulty: colors that look too similar, or text and controls that lack separation from their background.
  2. Try the matching feature first—color filters for color distinctions, contrast themes for interface visibility.
  3. Check the result in the apps and features you rely on, including the charts, pages, text, links, and controls relevant to your usual tasks.
  4. If the first setting does not help enough, test the other separately. Keep the option that makes the relevant tasks easier to see.

Microsoft’s support material describes these controls and how to use them; it does not report quantified outcome rates or establish a universal best setting. Its broader guidance on color and contrast for accessibility in Microsoft 365 likewise supports evaluating the result in the features you use.
