The story blended a 2009 laboratory study of a specialized material, an earlier startup’s reported sales plan, and separate industrial shielding coatings. RF-shielding paints are sold today, but their performance depends on the product and how it is installed.
What the original Wi-Fi paint story was based on
In 2009, Asuka Namai and colleagues published a study of aluminum-substituted epsilon-iron-oxide nanomagnets. They measured the material’s millimeter-wave absorption at room temperature using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy. The paper reported absorption peaks at 112, 125, 145, 162, 172 and 182 GHz for different compositions (Namai et al., Journal of the American Chemical Society, 2009).

That was a laboratory material result, not a demonstration of paint applied to a home. The study did not show that a finished wall coating blocked ordinary consumer Wi-Fi in a room. “Wi-Fi-blocking paint” was a much broader media label than the experiment supported.
Did the announced paint ever go on sale?
A retrospective published in 2026 says that a Silicon Valley startup, Force Field Wireless, was reported in 2004 as preparing to sell Wi-Fi-blocking paint for $69 per gallon (2026 retrospective). That reported price described a planned sale; it does not establish that the product launched, remained available, or was sold at scale. The available account does not settle what happened to the company or the proposed product.

What happened in the separate shielding-coating market?
Security-focused coating announcement
In 2010, EM-SEC Technologies announced that it had tested its coating around a painted sensitive compartmented information facility and said it restricted airborne radio-frequency signals. The account was a company-originated announcement reproduced by Government Technology, not independent confirmation of broad performance (Government Technology, 2010).
Industrial EMI/RFI coatings
Also in 2010, Sherwin-Williams announced an agreement to distribute Spraylat EMI/RFI shielding finishes to electronics-industry original-equipment manufacturers and product finishing shops (Sherwin-Williams announcement). This is evidence of an industrial coating market, not proof that a decorative, mass-market Wi-Fi-blocking paint was widely sold to homeowners.

What you can buy today—and what the claims mean
Products are now marketed as RF-shielding paint, EMF-shielding paint or conductive paint. For example, YSHIELD describes coatings for single walls, rooms, buildings and industrial applications, and says it supplies screening-attenuation reports up to 40 GHz. Its news archive says ECO54 was renamed SIL54 on September 20, 2026. These are manufacturer statements; they do not guarantee a particular result in a specific building (YSHIELD).

These examples are not interchangeable, and a coating’s label alone does not establish that it will block a particular signal in your room. The substrate, continuity of the coating, number of coats, frequency, grounding or bonding instructions, and openings such as windows and doors can all affect the result. Neither a wall coating nor the cited company announcement establishes a secure facility by itself; shielding paint is not a substitute for Wi-Fi encryption.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to interpret published attenuation figures
A VDB EMC Guides report labelled as a 2022 update compared 18 shielding paints and additives. Under its stated test method and application amount, it reported 43 dB at 1 GHz for YSHIELD MAX54 (VDB EMC Guides / Dr. Moldan, 2022 update). That is a result for a named product under a particular comparison setup, not a guaranteed reading for every wall or installation.

The same report found that two coats of standard wall paint reduced attenuation at 1 GHz by 4 dB for one tested product and 9 dB for another. Those observations apply to the specific products and test setup in the report; they should not be generalized to every shielding coating. The report also notes that manufacturers specify different coverage yields, which is why it used the same application amount across its test panels.

What to check before choosing a coating
- Frequency and test method: Look for test results at frequencies relevant to your goal, and check how the result was measured.
- Application conditions: Compare results only when the amount applied, substrate and number of coats are comparable.
- Grounding or bonding: Follow the product’s specific instructions; do not assume all coatings use the same approach.
- Intended use: Confirm whether the coating is designed for building surfaces, electronics enclosures or another application.
- Current product details: Verify formulation, package availability, application instructions and test documentation with the manufacturer before buying.
